Identifying Potassium & Phosphorus Deficiencies in Young Tomato Plants: Magnified Examples and Fix!

Your tomato seed starts should be green and healthy. Purple under the leaves or on the stem is fine. But if they look like this, they may have a potassium or phosphorus deficiency. Here is how you identify it and a solution to correct it.

Loved the video. Have a question on worm castings, tea and fish emulsion. If I purchased worm castings and fish emulsion would I still need the worm castings tea? Natural purple under a leaf reflects light back up through the leaf even some plants in full sun. Taken to the extreme, this is demonstrated in some familiar houseplants from the tropical forest floor like African Violets, Begonia and Calathea.

Gary, help! I have over 120 Pink Brandywine with Yellow leaves and purple veins. I am trying to add a pic but having difficulties. I will keep trying the pic. The yellow is a fading banana taffy color and the purple is a light lavender. Thanks for your help ( if you receive this.) So without knowing if they are in small pots etc... If you feel you havent over fertilized, it is time to give them a water soluble fertilizer with lots of nitrogen. In this case I would use the water soluble type like miracle gro or an alternative at 1/4 to 1/2 outdoor strength. That will let you know if a few days if it is nitrogen. If they are outdoors, cold weather can do this. I would also feed them if they are outdoors. Good luck. Excellent help. I like the fact that you mention you only apply this to sickly plants. I have a similar problem with a few of my pepper plants. I have a 10-10-10 liquid fertilizer that I can use now. I am thinking about one teaspoon per gallon . Do you think I need more than that for my (4 inch) potted up pepper plants ?

First year I’m not going to grow a lot of tomatoes. Why? because I still have 10 cases of pint size tomatoes. What I might do is re-can them. I read that way they can be re-dated giving them a longer life.

Do you have a recommendation for freeze damage? I had some tomato starts suffer from a very unusual, late freeze (California). Some of the leaves were killed off but not all. Just prune and dose with fertilizer and worm tea?

Mine have that a bit, and I just did what you suggested a few days ago. But also some of my cotyledons and to a lesser extent true leaves on 6 or 7 of my plants have browning on the edges of the leaves where it's crispy and damaged. Do you think that could have been a result of not fertilizing soon enough too, or is that something else?

What fertilizer did you use? I've never seen any without Nitrogen if you just need P & K. Also having trouble finding 10 10 10. Do you have a list somewhere, maybe Amazon what you use?

So you are right. Nitrogen typically gets thrown in. It wont hurt. You just want to up the P and K it some way. That would mean typically an increase in N unless. you buy some hydroponic or specialty P and K. Miracle Grow markets a 10-10-10 liquid organic fertilizer. It should be pretty easy to find.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN If you want just P and K you can use Mono Potassium Phosphate (MKP). 1g per gallon of water will give you 60ppm of P and 76ppm of K

The lower leaves of my daikon and kale are going yellow. Is that the same issue (phosphorous deficiency) or do you think it could be something else?

Usually bottom yellow leaves is more nitrogen. I would increase that a bit first.
