Well every artist begins by emulating his predecessors, so you're doing something right I suppose. One word of advice from an aspiring novelist (I still have to come up with character designs even if I'm gonna use words rather than images.) the most memorable stand out characters tend to be those whose background dictates something unique about their appearance, which logically informs the audience what the character is about just by looking at them, or picturing them in their heads, if they are reading a description. A good example would be Kakashi Sensei from Naruto. You know that dude is full of secrets, and at least one of those secrets involves that hidden eye under the tilted headband, from the very first frame he's introduced. Their personality should also shine through the design. A bright and bubbly girl ain't gonna show up in a plain black dress with a cold impassive mask stuck on her face. She's gonna be chipper from the get go, bouncing up the street with eyes full of life and stars and a colorful asymmetrical mess of an outfit cobbled together in a streak of impulse buys, or stitched together from six different hand me downs, if she's poor, and yet you won't feel bad for her in that opening sequence because nothing seems able to wipe the wide honest smile off her lips. And a couple of kittens will show up next to her and start playfighting, and she'll look intently at them and cheer them both on to do their best, right before the boy next door, all prim and proper in his navy blue uniform, walks off his lawn and joins her on the march to school, whereupon she'll grab him by the arm, get right up to his blushing face with bliss plastered on hers, sing his name in greetings, then bounce a couple quick steps forward dragging him into a light jog as he fumbles to regain his composure and nearly trips over himself. And with just that one little paragraph you're picturing two distinct characters and the omens of a typical high school romance. What I just described could be the opening sequence of the first episode of an anime, about 30 seconds maybe to play it all out, and you'd already feel like you know what's going on, who the two main leads are, and how the relation is probably gonna play out over the next 10 minutes, before the twist that introduces conflict rears its ugly head. And that's the magic of good design and contextualization, which combined make a character memorable within seconds.

First was 80s Astro Boy I got up in the mornings around 6:30am to watch it only because there was another show on afterwards called the American Dennis the Menace cartoon that aired during the mid to late 80s Then there was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the 87 American cartoon that lead to Samurai Pizza Cats that was the Japanese cartoon. That lead to Mighty Morphan Power Rangers thanks to Saban for using the Japanese footage from Super Sentai show Zyuranger. I also saw the DIC version of Sailor Moon thanks to the dubbing company and me being aware of them thanks to earlier 80s and early 90s shows like Inspector Gadget as well as the Super Mario Bros Super Show and Captain N the Game Master as well as Sonic cartoons they did. It was a mixture of Japanese cartoons as well as American cartoons including those from Disney and Warner Bros at the time that had their own share of Waifu characters. But when Sailor Moon came on TV, I already had awareness of what made a Japanese cartoon that distinct Japanese visual and culture of the show that stood out more than anything I seen from America and British cartoons at the time. Then Pokemon started in the late 90s almost before 2000s when I was a young teenager and it was during that Misty focus episode of Tentacool and Tentacruel where she was standing on the building telling the Tentacruel to stop his attack. It was the moment I fell in love with Misty regardless of what she was drawn to look like. And when 4Kids entertainment released their Pokemon music CD, Misty's song was the moment where she became my first anime waifu.

Anyone that does not act like Taiga, Louise, That blonde girl from Oreimo. I put 99% of tsunderes on the Death Note. Shou Tucker is on my number 1 hate list. That type is number 2. And I will definitely agree that I rarely like short haired girls, probably the reason why Rem got rejected. For me personally, I like girls along the lines of Cynthia (Pokemon), Volet (Violet Evergarden), Miku Nakano (Gotobun), Asuna Yuuki (SAO), and Eris Greyrat (Mushoku Tensei).
