Henry rifles are on every gun collector's wish list, but this example is more desirable than most. Its condition is fantastic, it has documented Civil War use, and lastly it was captured by Confederate Dr. George O. Brosnaham of the Prattville Dragoons, from Union Sergeant Clinton Kendall during the Atlanta Campaign. It was passed down by Brosnaham's descendants until 1980.
It is among several outstanding and historic Henry rifles in our August Premier Auction.

What a great story! Taking the weapons from the enemy is eternal. And even if I am not an American by any means (in the same time, my ancestors were fighting a different war, 1863 Uprising against the Russians in Poland), I was glad to hear that fantastic story…

It should go to Kendall family since you know the original owner

The history of this example is compelling and fascinating. The Henry rifle was unique due it's limited use during the civil war. No lever action rifle was ever adopted for use by the US military. The rimfire cartridge was underpowered and the rifles themselves were fragile compared to other guns of the time. Their contribution to the civil war is insignificant.

I can't believe that both sides treated prisoners the way they did.

The treatment of prisoners wasn't by design. Neither side was prepared to deal with them and both sides did poorly at it. The commandant of Andersonville was one of the two men executed for war crimes alleged to have been committed during the war.

Cool history but the rear sight looks off to me almost looks like a rear sight from a smith carbine. But I’m not a expert on original Henry variations so who knows what was all put on them.

Great Post but perhaps it should be donated to a Museum due it's historic lineage.

How did the Dr. get it home? Was he formally surrendered/Paroled, which would mean that he would have had to turn in his arms? or did he just leave, returning home, before the end of the war or after? If he kept the rifle, did he no keep his hand gun?

You used the term assault rifle for a lever action. SMH. Way to propagate a bad narrative for gun rights.

Karl from In Range , did the same thing. Don't know if they are just subconsciously using comparative words so people can understand. Make for a great DEFENSIVE rifle, too. Yeah....I am SICK of the term "Ass--- Rifle".......like a soldier would have to have that, plus a defense rifle. Politicians/Activists just trying to scare people into thinking their way. For it's time, it was revolutionary and the concept of the gun dated earlier to the Volcanic Rifle.
