This video covers my experience using the Steam Deck OLED Limited Edition for the first time. I detail my thoughts on the overall game experience as well as the issues and glitches I came across when using this device. Do I think you should get this system? My conclusion may surprise you...

I bought my son’s 512Gb o.g. Deck so he could get an oled, and have to say I’ve hardly had any problem with it. I think it’s fair to say that the majority of new Deck users are quite capable of navigating the desktop mode, so your warning viewers not to expect a Switch-like experience is a little unnecessary. I got mine primarily to use as an emulation system, and let me tell you, there was a lot of “tweaking” involved! I spent the best part of Christmas downloading and installing roms and getting them all to work. Now I have a vast library of Megadrive, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, GameCube and Wii games, and for the most part, the Deck handles them like a dream (not so much the Xbox legacy of systems). Furthermore, I play mine docked to my tv and it handles them all like a champ. Docking is something you could have mentioned, rather than the constant warnings. I wish in your video you moved past the constant warnings about the technical prowess needed to use it. There is no barrier for most owners - they’re not stupid and if I can work it out then I’m sure most people can. I’d never used Linux in my life but if I didn’t know what to do I just googled it. Thanks for the content and hope I didn’t sound like a dick too much. I

Very much appreciate you sharing your experience, and please don't worry I didn't think you came off as rude. In fact, I'm going to pin your comment as I think it's encouraging and paints a different picture, one that details exactly the right attitude to have when approaching this device. To add further, I think the reason I seemed convey so much caution is that I know people who feel uncomfortable doing something as simple as putting an SSD into their PlayStation consoles. I also have friends in the PC Gaming space who regularly download driver updates or change graphical settings in games then wonder why their performance is so poor. Perhaps that's just my environment but I couldn't help but imagine if they were to pick up this device they'd probably soon run out of patience long before giving themselves a chance to learn anything. But I do hope I didn't come off too harshly about using the steam deck as I truly love the system! I was just surprised at how much it seemed to require my intervention to get things to work. But as another person pointed out, it's possible my software was faulty. I think Valve is doing an excellent job with the updates; they're plentiful and consistently resolving issues. So I think anybody should have complete confidence that any issues will be resolved and long processes will get simpler over time. Thanks for taking the time to tune in and comment!

@@IndustrialGamer Thanks for your kind words and I understand where you're coming from. I've always been the type to work things out myself but when I think about it, I work with so many people who will ask the most basic question which could be answered with the ubiquitous "just Google it!" answer. I dunno - reading it back, I don't know what I came across as so snarky. I'm aware of your previous output, as I've followed Gene's videos for a long time, and he mentioned you. I'm a big fan of the 7th gen of games, and his "Best XBox 360 games" type of videos are exactly my bag. Whereas most modern gaming does nothing to me - the new Dragon's Dogma with its poor performance and micro-transactions sums up what a cesspool it is. Whereas 10 years ago you'd have Bioshock, RDR, GOW2 and similar all released within weeks of each other. We took it for granted at the time. It's great to be able to play Red Dead Redemption, God of War 2018 or Days Gone on the PS5 at 60fps. But these are all PS4 games. Where are the decent next -gen games? Anyway, I digress. I just love the Deck because I can play games like SSX Tricky on my TV! Not only that, but these emulators actually unlock the resolution! So PS2 or GameCube games that are showing their age on the console, display at a higher, smoother resolution with uncapped frame rates! I've just finished playing Metroid Prime Wii on the deck via an emulator and it's almost as good as the remaster. Keep up the great work - I wish I had your enthusiasm (I'm the same age as Gene, so it's harder for me to feel pleasure anymore!!). Cheers from Lincoln UK.

Installing the outside launchers is definitely not as easy as using steam, no doubt. Even so if you weren’t aware using lutris would have saved you a bunch of time doing so. It even has a toggle when installing launchers that adds them to steam.

Thanks for noting that. It would've been extremely helpful if the articles would've mentioned that tool prior to their 50+ step guide 😂

Sorry mate but you have probably been dealing with a corrupt installation of the so, because in normal conditions all that stuff you say you have downloaded manually from descktop, is an automatic proces of the system when you do the initial installation, and the same goes for the compatibily tools aka proton, that is selected by default for every game, so, in a default scenario, the Steam deck its as simple as make the initial install of the so, download a game ,and play, without doing anything more in beetwen, so you probably have been dealing with a bug of the system , and its better to factory reset and to not use a 5g net for the initial installation, because it could lead to those kind of problems you have been deeling with, and i know that because that also happened to me in one of my steam decks, with the diffetence that i knew that wasnt' normal because it was my second unit. Believe me, i have 2 steam decks, a lcd one dedicated to emulation and steam arcade games, and the oled with all.the other games, wich in my case that means 10 microsd with 600 games installed, and i can asure you that for ALL OF THEM has been downloading the game and play, without having to download of configure nothing manually, and that is the normal behivor of a steam deck, so i know for a fact that yours is faulty, and i would try to Factory reset and make a.clean installing without a 5g net and then try to download a verified game and play it without doing nothing extra

Thanks for clearing that up. Upon looking up forum post I did see many others also stating they had similar issues, so I had just assumed it was part of owning the Deck. Prior to this review I did a few more tests and noticed much less issues with verified games after a few recent updates. While it's annoying, I'll try a factory reset and see if I get better results. Appreciate the watch and comment!

@IndustrialGamer yea unfortunately I think he's right..a factory reset sounds like a good idea....I got my Oled steamdeck for Christmas and every single steamdeck verified game that I've downloaded from Red dead 2 to no mans sky...to the witcher 3 and many many many more and I've always been able to just download the games and press play...I've never had to enter desk top mode to download anything or run anything else in order to get a game to work...the only time I have had to enter desk top mode is to download the software to mirror my ps5 to steamdeck.
