I also remember my daughter crying in her room after the meeting ( she was 9 or 10 years old). When I wondered why she was crying her response shocked me:" Because I will die in Armageddon. And my lovely daddy, too. And my elder brother. We won't see you again". "Why do you think so?" " Because they always say it during the talks as well as in videos that only jehovah's witnesses will survive. I'm not one because I partake in birthday parties, celebrate new year, etc . Daddy is an atheist. Consequently we will die in Armageddon ". Despite being a JW I explained her that only jehovah can decide who to save and he sees hearts. Why is he gonna destroy good loving people? And after that I stopped bringing her to the meetings, but her fears continued up to the time when I left the organization. Thank goodness I wasn't totally brainwashed by them and could think critically. Now we live a happy life together, without fears or divisions within family.

That was the reason why I joined this cult at age 10, only because of the fear of be killed in Armageddon. I have the feeling, that Fear is the only thing that keeps thousand of people trapped in this cult.

Let my 6 year old daughter spend time with her witness grandparents she called crying because grandma told her that she is going to die at Armageddon. It is cruel and sadistic to tell a child this and I told my mother-law so. I made it clear that she was not to discuss Jehovah with my daughter without me present. My husband was disfellowshipped and I faded. In the 1970s the shunning rules for family members were a little more liberal. Later I told all family members to stop trying to persuade us to return ... I simply told them that I did not care if I died at Armageddon and that I was tired of being threatened with death; the world ends for someone everyday; It only matters if you believe it. That was 40 years ago.

Thank you Lloyd for the way you conduct interviews, letting the guest express herself without interrupting or start talking about your own experiences. Excellent communication skills (and great set-up, you gotta have those “family” pictures! Ha ha ha!) Another amazing and inspiring story. Same here; Ignorant, uneducated, indoctrinated by whacked out fanatical parents, baptized at 21 out of fear of Armageddon and believing in doing ‘the right thing’. Now discovering the Real truth, about ‘The Truth’. The “Overlapping Generation” illustration in the Kingdom book is what started waking me up. It’s still all messing with my mind. How can successive groups of men who adamantly declare that they have special status and revealed knowledge from God, and who are absolutely 100% sure that they are right, and for decades of time preach doctrine to millions of people earthwide under so-called direction from God’s Holy Spirit 😇, turn out to be ABSOLUTELY WRONG 😳 ? ? ? Holy shit ! ! 💩

Thank you for this interview. I've faded over 30 years ago. It's been a wonderful life for me and my children. I was a full time pioneer and moved from NY to Alabama to serve where the need is greater. I still live in Alabama and despite what people think of Alabama, my 4 children have gone to higher education at some of the best colleges in the country. They have successful careers, patent lawyer, teachers, educators,and independent directors and film makers, This is because I left the religion when they were young and before they were indoctrinated.

A wonderfully freeing interview, Lloyd. So many gems and insights and above all else what a radiantly positive story. Many, many thanks Amber for your courageous outlook. You have been through so much. You make so much plain and simple sense. Your words about being on guard around JW “friends” rings very true. Once I left the organization, my tolerance of conditional friendships plummeted. As much as I once missed my JW friends, I realised I could never be my true loving self around them. We all - whoever we are - deserve better than fake friends who will turn on us as quick as look at us. And report us to big JWs. True friends connect with us over unconditional positive regard. Not over a tick box exercise on approval and public displays of “affection”. Oh, I now have the kindle version of Leaving the Witness. So looking forward to reading it!

Thanks for this great interview! The story u relate abt China is very much like we have here in Donetsk republic, Ukraine's territory controlled by Russia. The activity of witnesses is under ban. Great interview, Lloyd. Can’t wait to read her book and join the Facebook page. I’m ordering the book today. Amber’s comment about not being able to be yourself with friends that are still JWs resonated strongly with me. I am being shunned by someone who was my best friends. for many years and I recently reached out to because her mother passed away, only to be met with no response. I found myself feeling hurt all over again. Amber’s statement struck a nerve and made me realize that I just need to let that go because even if my old friend came back into my life, it would never be the same. I would always have to censor myself when talking to her. I refuse to do that. Thank you so much!

Thank you Lloyd and Amber! I love how Amber articulates her understanding of the larger sociological and political aspects of the rise, spread, and continuance of religions born of "the great awakening" (to the idea that white males w/ power need stricter social controls to maintain power). Wonderful interview .. thank you both Lloyd and Amber .. I think there might be quite a few very talented JW’s who are “serving” in lands where they are using their abilities to do something extraordinary. I have used the term “Jehovah’s Witness Rockstar” too.. when describing friends with exceptional abilities and deep emotional intelligence to relate to all sorts of people. So much in this interview resonated with me. Your reflection on translating the doctrines to a culture of people who would find the premise of the belief system absurd was very profound.

Thank you so much for this excellent interview! It brought back fond memories of living in China as an ex-JW. Just as Amber said, I learned a lot about myself while living there. It was an incredible experience! I love the people, culture, and speaking Mandarin. I met people from all around the world who were open to discuss virtually any topic, and if there was disagreement, it was no big deal, and we could still remain friends. So contrary to when I was a JW. Many local people that I met were curious about westerners and western culture. When I was there, several "foreigners" and "locals" that I knew attended Christian churches. Around Christmas time, I remember the gorgeous decorations throughout Beijing. I am excited to read Amber's book! :-D

I had a lightning bolt in this interview. Your comment on how it fills and mutes your thinking process.... that is so incredibly poignant! I had friends show me things that I knew in the back of my mind I knew were true but threw the thought and friend away. That is what keeps JW active. Until you said this I hadn’t realized how much sharper my mind and thought process is now in all areas of my life. I am only out a year and a half so I am still awakening to all of this. Sadly I am 54 years old and my best years are behind me. Luckily I have my husband (we left together) and since we faded my parents and family but it’s a false front that I don’t feel good about. JWs like to use the 'persecution mentality' - that they are 'banned' in countries like China - to justify that they are indeed God's true disciples, doing God's work and preaching The Truth.
@bledback2life5 жыл бұрын
By the way, Amber, your Mandarin pronunciation is pretty spot on! (Mandarin is my second language.) FYI, I was born in Singapore, where JWs are banned - so growing up in a JW household in Singapore, going preaching and holding meetings and Bible study groups etc. under a shroud of secrecy, against a backdrop of persecution and prosecution, was quite an experience indeed. My parents remains orthodox JWs. They have friends who have moved to China to preach "The Truth". Perhaps you may even know some of them.

I was raised in a split home of my mother being a witness and my father being a Lutheran. There was a lot of damage done emotionally, thinking my father & I might die in Armageddon... even though I went to meetings and was in the theocratic school, I wasn’t baptized. And also, I had this idea that my mother loved her religion more than me... because she made it aware to me that if I ever needed a blood transfusion, I would not receive one.
@tamaraomalley41194 жыл бұрын
That sounds pretty identical to my story. My mom became a JW 40 years ago, my father remained catholic. I was just born at that time, and so my mom raised me in this religion since birth. I had such fears of my father, my siblings and I, being destroyed at armageddon before I even started school. Such fears and anxieties at such a young age. I couldn't understand how my mom could be happy in paradise if her family had just been murdered. I left as a teen, unbaptized also, but I didn't truly escape the trauma and feelings of impending doom from having these sick beliefs instilled in me at such an impressionable age until many years later.

Hi John. lovely interview. I feel sad though when I think how many Jw's come out for various reasons and are atheists because they feel that they have been betrayed by "religion" I pray that they realise that no one comes to the Lord unless the Holy Spirit draws him. So those who have no real belief or desire for God or Jesus now, I know it's a journey and that the Spirit will reveal the real truth if the person is really desiring and searching for the truth. its not of ourselves that anyone should boast. God bless all who are searching for the GOD of Truth. Lorraine

What an amazing interview, story and ex-JW! And congrats with the scholarship, Amber! A side-comment, only: You touched upon the issue of state issued ban. This is often framed, as you did, as a question related to freedom of thought and religion. If there were no children involved, perhaps I would agree. JW among other cults should be banned because a ban thins out practitioners and by this protects children, plain and simple.

I didn´t have to hear from an outsider that this was a cult. Some elders in the congregation suggested that I buy the book of the history of the Jehovah's Witnesses (I don't remember the name of the book) and when I read the way Charles Taze Russell treated his wife it was the beginning of my awakening. It took me three years to escape the WT. There is no honorable way to leave the JW. One of the most traumatic experiences of my life. I was not prepared for the backlash. I am very happy that I survived that experience.
