Man… I forgot how much I loved playing Yoda’s Stories, IJ’s Desktop Adventures, and Infernal Machine… I got to pick these classics up again! Thanks for the great interview Daniel, and thanks for the amazing games Hal! Love your work!

Thanks so much Hal for being such an inspiration. I was an intern at LucasArts in 1993 (I believe the first intern for that division). I hounded them by sending in bug fixes for Monkey Island at the time and had the honor to meet Hal and work on the instruction manual for IJ and the Fate of Atlantis with Eric Willmunder. I remember working with pure geniuses (at the time were working on Rebel Assault)---developers with PhD's in robotics/mathematics, etc... They wrote code faster than I could (still) type and normally without errors. Simply amazing and something I still look back on today (I just turned 50) as one of the fondest memories in my life.

The Infernal Machine is the first game I ever played when I was a kid, a great adventure throughout with a lot of variety in gameplay and enviroments. It took the original Tomb Raider formula and just pushed it further and refined it. Having it take place after WW2 was a great idea, having Soviets as the enemy instead of Nazis. My most favorite memory of playing this as a kid is having my parents play through the sections that had spiders, as I was afraid to death of them. And there are a lot of spiders in this game. Thank you Mr. Barwood for your work, it formed my tastes in games and made me an Indy fan. I only hope that the new Bethesda game takes a lot of lessons from Infernal Machine, mainly the exceptional level design. Also, thanks for the in-depth interview and for not interrupting him, Daniel. Lots of great info.

I have no idea if Hal will ever read my comment but probably this will be as close as I can get. I just wanted to express my deepest appreciation for his involvement in game industry. I'm 42 now but I still have vivid images of me and my cousin trying to solve some puzzle in IJ and Fate of Atlantis in 1993. Both of us were great Indy fans and of course waiting for new Indy movie. Indian Jones and Fate of Atlantis perfectly filled the Indy gap. It has really good writing for this series because stories for Indiana Jones always needed to be firmly grounded realistically on the other hand Indy always thanks to his skills was able to uncover an unimaginable surreal mystery which I guess can be very hard to balance (after watching Crystal Scull and Dial of Destiny I'm sure it could be messed up just like in these 2 movies). I'm also a great fun of IJ and the Infernal Machine. The level design in this game is just outstanding. Everything in this game got dated: graphics, sound quality but you can still feel the adventure. I have real pleasure when I'm replaying it every 2-3 years. To sum up a big THANK YOU from a fan to Mr. Hal and of course thanks for David for making thin interview!

Great interview. It's funny, I also thought we'd left Leningrad/St. Petersburg in one of the paths. I recall that we were inspired to put it in because of the Hermitage museum there as a great place to find an artifact about Atlantis. We had it in the design, and then after doing that found a reference from an old source, I forget which one, that actually also coincidentally suggested there might be some clue about Atlantis there.

Thanks a lot Daniel for this great interview! You brought up very interesting questions and comments and more than once was I: "oh wow, really ? He sure knows and love his subject". I couldn't stay until the end but it was a real pleasure listening to you both. I discovered Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis in the south of France at the age of 7 and to this day... (many many years later ;P) it remains my favourite point-n-click game, as well as my canon Indiana Jones 4th installment.

Thank you for another great interview! Holy smokes, so many Lucas and Star Wars connections. Having "discovered" Ralph McQuarrie makes him such a key into making Star Wars what it is. Thats awesome. And Corvette Summer with Mark Hamill....also a fun movie, I had no idea he wrote it. Wouldnt have guessed it was the Fate of Atlantis guy in a million years! Also seems to have fairly normal social values for being in Portland =)

Pretty clear from what Hal Barwood had to say in terms of the mishandling of Indiana Jones as a character in more recent times and the wont to keep returning to things which worked previously, rather than being genuinely creative, it's clear that there's no way that he enjoyed Dial of Destiny. Good, man. It was terrible.
