I am glad Ms.Nooyi brought this up. It is almost every Indian's story: I remember my mom telling me how her aunt had helped raise my sister during initial months after child-birth. And numerous other examples that I can think of.. Grandparents and relatives have a great share in raising us when our parents have to juggle with livelihood.To extend this notion to helpful co-sharing communities is a wonderful idea. That way, the world will realize the importance of people around them and gladly co-exist. Before the age of television and internet, next-door neighbours would gladly drop in to offer a helping hand when necessary. Nowadays, we are getting reclusive and that should probably change.

I can't expressed just how happy I am to have discovered this woman; literally 2 days ago! Especially during this pandemic, in my case, everything she has said regarding working mothers and wives is even more heightened. My spouse and I are still working (which I'm grateful for); the children are at home; thus that balances/coping mechanism/support systems she's been talking about is now more valuable to me than ever. The recognition that it takes all those different systems (including constant prayers) to make it as a working mother and wife is of great reassurance to me.

Listening to Indra Nooyi speeches is inspirational and can be easily correlated to the situation today's working women are facing while trying to balance between family and career. The concept of creating new community living/ time sharing can be implemented provided we are interacting and practicing our traditional values and not selecting them whenever it suits us. Traditional Asian values & cultures are looked upon as taboo and hurdle in overall growth of individual career in today's globalised society. I do agree we need our older as well as younger generation to live together then only the values and traditions can be passed on and we will have healthy balance future generation. Today we come across young generation undergoing depression/ influenced and getting into habit of drugs, older generation undergoing dementia/alzheimer. For all this partially we are only responsible since we all want and like nuclear/urban lifestyle which not only damage our today's society but our future generation.

I was raised in a multigenerational family for part of my life and I raised my sons in a multigenerational family and I am so VERY grateful. I would never leave my aging mom in someone else’s hands. That’s not how we roll in the black community either; rich or poor.

Ms. Nooyi, you seem to forget about why we moved from a joint-family system to more of a nuclear family system. It was likely because living with over-bearing in-laws was very challenging for women. It takes special give and take between parents and children (with partners) to live together. I have found that in-laws are much too difficult to live with. In an ideal world, yours would be a perfect solution.

Works for my brother ( sister in law is a hospital administrator with odd working hours, grandparents take care of the kids). What you missed mentioning that is that you and I get to talk about our experiences, not the whole planet.

@@ravik007ggn Without access to any data on this topic, my sense is that my experience is probably in line with the majority's. May I ask you to try talking to your SIL about whether she is compromising or on top of the world with her current living arrangement. If we could come up with a system where the grandparents live nearby, but not in the same house, then I'd agree that Nooyi's solution would be closer to ideal. But that's not always feasible. Living near, but not too far away, would mean that there is no additional strain put on the couple's marriage, in the name of raising the couple's kids properly.

With all due respect---Also, in our context, in the context of joint families, you seem to forget karma and learning play an important part. May be it was the in-laws, but not in a void, with your own ego. As a part of asian family model, we learn that seniority matters and so age is revered. Even they are overbearing sometimes you can take it ---and yet learn not to do it to the next generation. Nuclear families can run a generation or two, after that, countries with nuclear families with have a higher rate of divorces and broken families. Facts.

First of all I like to talk about this subject that Asian family, as a family member specially for the parents if it is small family it is easy to live with them but in some many cases there is a big family it is very difficult to maintain its When a child growing up, up to 15 years parents must have to care for them but up to 15 years many events comes in their lives some time good days some time not, but in any condition parents care for them it is very difficult in modern life, so many aspects and demand for living life, so up to 15 years child must get education it is most important part of life in growing because of after 15 years of child Life he or she can understand what is life and real paths of life starts from this age of life also for the carrier I think our latest position in India The education is totally failed, even parents can't care for their child you can see in the UP of India more than 150 child died in fever in the hospital no care about it, you can see the policy of the government how can died hey are in the hospital? so this is a example, you can imagine now.

I like and agree with a lot of what she is saying. However that family model is not specific to Asia or India. My family is West Indian, mixture of British, Portuguese, Indian, and African. When I look at the traditions and culture from each of them I saw many similarities, one of which was the extended family in the same house. On both sides of the family, in each of the “home country” there were multiple generations in the same house. We brought that to the US and continue it now. It’s not unique, it has been the culture in most ancient societies. It is a truest foundation of humanity.

That Asian model is pretty much crashing in Asia. And it would be a bit vain to call it Asia model. Till a century back this was pretty much the model every part of the world. India is late to arrive on industrialization and hence the model still sticks around. But time will run out in this century especially so because the economic model itself will be West, nothing Indian or Asian about it. And Nooyi's case really is inorganic. Tearing seniors away from their organic fabric back home and importing them is like exploitation. In the Indian model it is more like "it takes a village to.." And for every good example there will be at least one bad or more in India. The family system can be terribly oppressive and obstructionist when it wants to be. All is not hunky dory. I would say there is a great deal of suffering and pain as well. The interview is more from the corporate strategy book on image building (and its important to do that to keep attracting labour) and less to present a truthful picture. The real question to ask and answer is whether the current economic model of which NYC is the vanguard - and Pepsico and Citi and other companies the poster girls - is going to by design place inordinate stress on work life balance. I would say in the Asian model you wouldn't even think of selling something like soda. All fizz and hollow, just pure marketing and exploitation of the weaknesses in human psyche, which has been perfected in NYC over a century. Completely inconsistent with Asian values and should I say universal values.

For the most part I agree with you that the joint family model bears many disadvantages, as well. The awareness how a joint family culture should ideally be has to also be understood by in-laws, grand parents etc. Suppressions and even sexual abuse also happens withing families. Let's admit that Ms Noori was granted many priviledges. And this is not to be held against her. The rest of us we have to decide what we want and can manage in our own lives. Living in Europe I see everyday what a burden the nuclear family structure mean for families. I wonder why everyone feels the urgent need to have children in an overpopulated world. Our current economic framework is not at all conducive for reproduction. Let's face the truth and act accordingly.
