In this short documentary, former officers share their thoughts on policing and race in America.
Subscribe on KZbin: bit.ly/U8Ys7n
In the previous years the discussion of police on race has reached a fever pitch. There have been the deaths by the hands of policemen of Philando Castille, Alton Sterling, Freddie Gray, Mike Brown, and Eric Garner. This has started two movements. Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter. This has popped up in pop culture with the movies Straight Outta Compton, and now the new movie Detroit.

+Al Christian I'm glad. Like with any problem people have to acknowledge there is a problem before it can be fixed. Police have a very tough job that I could not and would not want to do. Dealing with the trash criminals of society but also the tragedies of the victims. But at the same time, the judicial system is not fair towards minorities or the poor.

That white officer in the blue tie is in massive denial about race relations between officers and citizens. Why does he assume that protestors are not educated and don't have jobs? Why does he think that protestors who are calling for a better justice sytem is a horrible thing? He is the reason why BLM exist. It clearly states in The Constituion and The Bill of Rights that American citizens have the right to move about freely in their own country. When someone is giving you attitude it's because that person recognizes that you are unfairly targeting them by race - which you just admitted to. His attitude is shameful! And there are plenty of other officers who think just the way he does. They are not the exception, they are definitely the rule.

Vahaki Walahu - Yes, it's terrible that even "white" Americans generally don't care enough about police misconduct against "white" Americans. Like the uniformed officer suggested, it will take "white" Americans to make significant positive changes in American policing (they're the overwhelming majority of Americans, and they have the most political and economic power).

The one police office that said if he saw some Black guys in a White neighborhood so goes behind to talk to them. He's what's wrong. There shouldn't be a neighborhood that people are't welcomed. The guys could be visiting friends and to admit that you feel that people shouldn't go where the people are a different skin tone scares me. He's actually saying that segregation makes sense to him. Now granted maybe he grew up a certain way and his fear or ignorance or both have taken over his mind; but he's suppose to be there for everyone. He's asking them what's up when he knows that's either a friendship saying or a mockery saying. When you don't like someone don't try to so call identify with them, just stick to hello. Don't go up like you trying to instigate a problem just ask if you feel you have to but leave out the hood speak and remember that they have fears just as much as you do because you have a gun.

Weatherspoon (the black detective) touched on something i really hate about many Police departments and that's the "in group" and "out group" mentality. If the other cops don't like you, if you are not part of their club of unconditional support, than you are hard pressed to receive ANY support when you need it. Good luck getting back up from those who think you are not "part of the crew." It's so terrible and toxic and very reminiscent of gang mentalities where accountability is suppressed and individuals feel locked in system that they ultimately have no control and cannot affect real change.

That guy in the blue tie really proves how corrupt the police system is, for him to say that he sounds delusional. My white friends come to my house all the time to study and watch movies, and I go to there house to do the same. For him to assume if a white person is going to a black neighborhood that means they are there for illegal activities with black kids. I’m done 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️. He sounds so stupid for saying, to go find a job instead of protesting, my friend a job is not going to stop racism against black and people of color.

What would be good in redoing the exact piece with the same individual and saying five years later do you now understand the dynamics of not being wordy of life or worthy of inclusivity now versus what your perspective was five years ago . It would be interesting to see if there was any change when the idea of implicit bias has now become full and apparent in the discourse of policing .

I am sorry, but the Caucasoid (white) male cop with a dark suit, white shirt, light blue tie, well-groomed, short grayish dark hair, glasses, he seems as if he is in 50's. This person made an irrational ("not smart") comment, when saying he would stop a person he saw walking in a neighborhood most people are of his particular race. E.g. a Caucasoid person walking in a neighborhood where most people are of African-American ancestry or vice-versa an African-American walking in a neighborhood where most people there at of European ancestry. You cannot stop only based on his race!! It is none of your business! Unless they are suspects or have commited a crime. Pre-conceived assumptions about people, races produces a "finished" product called bad policing, because it based on stereotypes, profiling and so on. Society in America doesn't need more cops like that. Sorry!!!!

The thing is, first of all, those rich neighborhoods that were initially there from the backs of slavery to begin with. The American economy today was made from first, the stealing and genocide of the Native Americans, to the forced importation of Africans to do slave labor on American lands. The blacks were seperated through racial district lines to live in poor places. Poor education, etc. Anyway moving to modern day time. What happens if a group of black people happened to be two or three bothers and another black friend getting together to go look at the rich neighborhood for ideas on what kind of house they may want to live in when they get rich in the future from a company they will own? They may want inspiration of where they will want to live? Then a cop car pulls up with stereotypical rumors in the policemen's mind. Instantly racially profiling them and telling them to pull to the curve? What if there was traffic on the highway so they just took the backstreet and drove through a town? C'mon.

This is such a good reflection of the real issues in the police department. You have all these cops talking about real issues, then you have this one cop denying everything, saying " you don't belong" and then saying protesters need to go to college and get jobs. What? We have jobs, we went to college. That's what you think of protesters? We're a nuisance, trouble makers, uneducated, shiftless, whatever poor description you can project onto us to subtract from our credibility, our character, and ignore our cause. Are you intimidated that educated, productive members of society have a problem with how you police them and their children? All these other cops are being reasonable, thinking about the issues, the questions of rules and lawfulness, what they've observed int he department and the community, AND THIS GUY! He's the cop we're scared of and he doesn't just exist in our imagination. There are more of him out there. If you could screen out cops who think like him or teach and make policies based on what these other cops are saying, we'd be a police - community relations would improve dramatically. Trust would go up; co-operation would go up. It all starts with being seen as and treated like humans and people with rights who just want to be protected and helped.
