So unbelievably articulate and powerfully well thought out that I had to watch it twice. Stanley Crouch is clearly a treasure. Both of these men are great Americans, if I had a time machine I would seek them out to have a beer. If you take nothing else away from this consider how relevant a discussion from twenty years ago is today. I wish that the one person giving this a "thumbs down" would explain her thinking. Stanley has left me with a lot to think about - my only critique of this particular talk is when at 11:25 he states that insider trading, slavery, deceptiveness (selling rotten meat),et c., are products of "the worst manifestations of capitalism" - each has been with every society throughout history which clearly have nothing to do with said capitalism.

i suppose you could make the case that whatever music's the most popular at the time represents America. Right now it's hiphop.

I enjoyed Mr Crouch's contributions in Burns' _Jazz_ documentary. Especially, the accounts on Sidney Bechet.

@@stanmarsh912 I disagreed with much of what he said, but he was an important figure in the African American dialogue.

@@harlemsonchap2 I respect that point of view a lot. Seems like most people nowadays write someone off as an idiot when they disagree with their views, but varying opinions are important if we ever wanna get anywhere. I heard it put like this once " Better for us to bark up many trees than for all of us to bark up the same tree." I don't know much about Stanley Crouch but he seems like an interesting character to me. That's what brought me here.

@@stanmarsh912 Stanley Crouch was brilliant! And his writings are some of the finest in all literature. He was a giant in African American culture, although I disagreed with him on many issues.
