Here's a good one you will chuckle over as you said you grew up on a farm and possibly have driven a swather ( I guess the proper term is windrower ). Well years ago we had a middle aged mechanic come to do some work on warranty on our swather at the time and when it came time for the swather to be moved and tested he told me to run it as NO WAY was he going to get behind the wheel. He said he had a bad wreck with a farmers swather just a couple of years prior because he started it up and did not have the experience behind the wheel of one ever in his life and he turns the steering wheel and the swather spun around and the header smashed into his own service truck and he didn't even know how to stop what was going on ... he never wanted to relive that nightmare !. Again, a mechanic that knows how to repair the piece of equipment but does not have the experience operating one.

Everything turned out fine and though not an accident it was a learning experience. they didn’t yell, belittle or punish me but allowed me to use the screw up as for what it was meant, a lesson. Truckers are product relocation specialists and adhering to timetables and schedules are a fairly large chunk of what makes a company successful so cudos to those who don’t just wipe and toss.

I drove for 40 years but retired early because of an injury. I was very fortunate, I was only involved in one accident and that was when a drunk driver lost control and hit me head on when I was driving a fuel tanker loaded with 12,000 gallons of gas. Fortunately it didn't rupture the tank. I was back to work two weeks later, but as time went on after I went back, I also had a feeling that my luck was running out. Did I make mistakes ? Of course I did, but I learned from each one and moved on.

I think you made the right choice. No body was seriously hurt or killed. Thankfully the driver wasn’t doing the speed limit. It might have been much worse. LOL as for your son from what I’ve seen in videos he is a huge asset to the company. Just remember he can go home and tell mom if you fire him for no good reason and that could make life miserable.

Ultimatly, the final decision is based upon how much I formation you gather. How you build relationships with your people. Supporting your people while measuring your business by what real assets are. Your people, your family

Safe T Plus steering stabilizer....Pittsburgh Power Saxonburg, PA. Shop has to be set up to be "idiot" proof....only use those jacks where you have a non moveable barrier behind, in front. and both sides of them....all the training in the World can't prevent a "blond" moment....have to make that moment an impossibility. Haul out of Cargil near Ithaca ? A few years ago I was involved in bringing a rotary foundation auger drill there for their new air shaft. Neat operation, few realize where road salt comes from....deep under a lake.

The other day I made a comment in what my take away theory was on the shop incident and yes as it turns out I was correct in how it played out. I know some really were ragging on the person behind the wheel but I also realize that not all mechanics happen to have much behind the wheel experience to the extent of having a quick reaction in a situation like this. I also know and don't expect your trucks are ever in this condition but I have driven well used trucks from other owners that the gear shift rubber bushing assembly as well as the actual steel tower were so worn that one had no idea if it would be in gear or not by moving the gear shift ( it was an X logging truck used on bush roads which says it all ). As to the other incident, I can sure see that happening as he moved over slightly because here comes a truck around a curve and trailers always drop down into the curve so one gets used to compensating. No room for error at all on such a skimpy shoulder type road, no accident vs accident are mere inches apart !.
