As a fellow crocheter that only learned last year, my favourite way that I learned to read written patterns is to make Christmas ornaments. There are so many free patterns on Pinterest, and many of them have youtube tutorials as well as free written versions in blog posts. Since they are such small projects, it helped me to learn how to read and understand written patterns, as well as pick up on any mistakes I made without frogging/undoing too much of my work.
