North Korea is only poor because of the west. 20% of their population was killed during the Korean War and 80% of their infastructure was destroyed including: dams, schools, hospitals, buildings, energy installations, literally everything. More bombs were dropped on them than the entire pacific theatre of ww2. Yet even after the war, North Korea was never given any money to try repair its damages while South Korea was given billions to then progress into a rich and developed country. Instead, North Korea was sanctioned by most of the world and unable to trade with anyone besides a few countries greatly limiting its chance of economic growth and recovering. Also, North Korea’s lack of fertiliser (maybe because they are sanctioned), very short farming season, natural disasters and horrible earth for farming makes a shortage of food. It makes sense North Korea decided to make nuclear weapons when nuclear deterrence is the only thing stopping an invasion from the south or west and a repeat of all the horrors in the Korean War.
