I have a couple of questions if I may. What size of gravel/ crushed rock should I buy. How thick should I put it down. Do I have to use the geotextile fabric underneath.
@StableHorseTraining Жыл бұрын
It is called all kinds of things, crusher dust, crusher gravel, limestone (it's not limestone though) dust etc. It's a very fine gravel mixed with the finer bits. It should be put down at least 3 inches to 5 inches to really last as it will compress down at least an inch. Yes, the fabric is an absolute must or you'll just be wasting your gravel. Rocks, sand and gravel are all more dense than dirt and clay. In time the dirt and/or clay will just rise to the top through it, especially during wet conditions.

What do you recommend for footing for pasture stalls? The owner of the stable where my horse is boarded just throws hay and wood pellets on top of manure and leaves it because.....I don't know!!! it's open to the elements, I guess? I tried clearing it out, assuming there was a base layer of gravel under it, but never could get down low enough. It was just layers of mud hay and manure, all of which she said was good and natural and helps keep the water out...Should I just let it go since the horses rarely shelter in it or should I try to revamp the flooring? And if so, what would you recommend putting down for a pasture stall?

I would leave such a facility. It's not natural and is a breeding ground for all kinds of things. I would imagine your horse's feet and legs are suffering for it. If you have to stay, yes, clean it out, put fabric down and fill with crusher dust and compact it. Mats at the eating area and high traffic areas.

@@StableHorseTrainingThank you. I wish I could leave, but I'm stuck due to proximity, so I'll just have to renovate and rehabilitate the sad accommodations. Some day when I have a place of my own I'll put in paddocks the way you've designed them.

They are used to their human making strange noises,😄 you use so many engines👏 Result looks really good, but it generates so much work ! Did you change the gravel (from the new pile) or added some sand because it looks so much lighter, almost white or is the sun reflecting on the dry soil ? Yesterday, the arena looked almost white. Is your gravel issued from the mountains or lakes around ?
@StableHorseTraining4 жыл бұрын
It's just the sun reflecting off of it and it has yet to be made dirty from the horses. Fresh gravel is a very light grey here. Comes from the mountains close by

So is this paddock going to be a new section all on its own, or is it gonna be some extra space for Gracie and Peggy to play in?
@StableHorseTraining4 жыл бұрын
Both I think.

Do you ever get the feeling your horsey's are saying, "What is he up to now???" as they quietly stare at you....
