I always believe the dance of the dragons could always be avoided. Viserys the 1st should name taken a page out of Jahaerys’s book and make it law that if there isn’t a clear successor, then a great counsel should always happen in a dire as a last chance to determine an heir.

Defiantly should have happened earlier to avoid the mess it caused. 101 was meant to set a precedent, but Viserys wanted it done his way and ignored the whole process that made him king in the first place. By picking rhaenyra he raises questions about his own claim. It amazing they even went 101 year without something like council of 101 being needed, regardless Aegon or anyone really should have made it clear law

Hmm. Aemon killed by a _'random'_ crossbow bolt on Tarth Baelon killed by _stomach issues_ (poison?) It appears that someone was out to do for the Targaryens. I get the same vibes like in IClaudius where the Empress Livia was systematically eliminating rivals to her son Tiberius. Who could it be the maesters, the Myrish, the Braavosi? It really looks like they made a few calculated assassinations that lead to the Dance and the Death of the Dragons.

Reminds me of what Rhaenyra said in a line of hers recently in HotD; *"We must remind these Lords of the Oaths they swore"* To be fair... they weren't given much choice, is the issue. Jaeherys and many Targaryen kings after him held great councils to make Succession Decisions, Viserys however just told everyone he already made one. And then that lead to half the Realm swearing Oaths they didn't agree nor wish to bow too but had little choice... To quote a different kind of 'Stark': *"Not a great plan"*

The council of 101 is the only time Targaryen used one its history of ruling Westeros. The only other time a council is mentioned is when the targs were deposed and the chose Robert Baratheon has king. The king Westeros always decides his heir and it’s always a male heir except for Viserys. He kept rhaenerya has his heir because the love he had for aemma his first wife. He did not want to marry Alicent, the realm forced him to marry and he chose Alicent instead of letting everyone choose for him. Viserys wanted his line to pass down with the children he had with Emma because if she had a son that lived he would have made him heir.

@@adefay2811 There were Councils after Viserys over the case of Succession, of course one that's already been mentioned to you in regards to the Blackfyre candidate also there. I get Viserys loved his wife and all, but still, he let the situation pass without considering what he was doing. Take a page out of his Grandfather's book, that's all he had to do....

It’s too bad that the Great Council itself did not become a precedent. It would establish who had the more support politically among the great houses, while discouraging any armed resistance to the council’s ruling because losing claims would see who they would be up against in military terms.

It’s ridiculous Baleon wad the heir apparent and vis his heir, the great council was not needed Rhea had already been passed over, And Leanor was not even a Targaryen but his last name was Valeryon, the succession was set.

This is why valyria was a freehold and not ruled by a king. It's hard to rule over another man when he has a giant murder lizard on his side. Both jahearys and viserys just kicked the civil war down the line. As long as more than 1 dragon lord exists there can be no king.

Since the council had decided the heir once, it should have been used every time the line of succession was in question. king jaehaery should have written the rules for the line of succession based on how the council voted. Although ,The dance of the dragons would still happen because of Otto Hightower, especially once Aegon 2nd claimed a dragon he was scheming to gain power since day one.

@@adefay2811 perhaps Viseryes should have had a great council when he decided to name Rhenerya the heir. But it as you say Otto would never have accepted that decision anyway, he was determined to have his blood on the throne. And o feel like he would have turned Alicent to his thinking whit time. So the war was perhaps always coming

@@drrohanjacob But I like Valyria, here we only have, what, 3 Valyrian families? And only 2 have Dragons. Jaeherys wasn't wrong with what he did, and we see a dozen Targaryen kings come after him. Viserys is the one that screwed up. Valyria had 40 Dragonlord families and dozens of other more minor houses as well, and Dragons were abundant. That's different. In Westeros? Targaryens had 90% of the Dragons in a single family, and with or without Dragons, this wouldn't be an issue if Viserys used Common Sense and actually bothered to be a good father to all his kids, not just Rhaenyra.
