With an increased amount of retrospectives concerning the Assassin's Creed games, it seems strange that there isn't much being said about the series's very beginnings. This video aims to achieve that.

Assassin’s Creed as a series has evolved a lot over the years. It has gone from a basic action adventure game with a touch of stealth gameplay to a full blown action stealth simulator with arguably the best parkour traversal in the industry. Eventually it incorporated some RPG elements to spice up it’s gameplay and while it has unfortunately divided the community, a community that seems to be at eachothers throats more than anything, we can’t deny that the series has definitely tried to innovate. While there has been a resurgence in retrospectives regarding the Assassin’s Creed series, a trend I myself have hopped on to an extent, I find there to be little in the discussion of the very first Assassin’s Creed.
I think it’s simply because there isn’t much that really needs to be said regarding the beginning of the series. A Lot of people from what I have seen have acknowledged that it has flaws and that it isn’t perfect by any means, but it was Ubisoft's first stab at the series and so it’s flaws are generally forgiven. On top of that, the reason that a lot of these other Assassin’s Creed games are being looked back on nowadays is likely due to the changes they brought. A Lot of games like Unity or Odyssey had controversial additions or releases that have warranted a reflection, post hype, or more accurately, post hate. And this is indicative of a larger theme within the Assassin’s Creed community. Looking at these games from a different lens however has led to a lot of over exaggeration in my eyes. People saying that X game is the best by far due to XYZ and not really giving the full context to a game's flaws and strengths. I was terribly guilty of this in my Unity video. I think I did do a decent job at recounting the good assets the game has but in attempting to make my argument as seemingly strong as possible I disregarded any actual criticism towards the game for the most part and exaggerated my statements. I bring this up because I see the beginnings of the same thing happening with the first assassin's creed in that a lot of the comments I get seem to say its either the worst game ever or that it’s the best Assassin’s Creed and that it will never be topped.
assassins creed, the game, not the famous audiobook in English, and more specifically, the assassins creed directors cut has had a large amount of reflection over the past while. in this assassins creed review, we talk about the assassins creed design, the assassin's creed, and while we mostly analyze the assassins creed game design, we do look at just about everything in this assassins creed directors cut review. I know the game is old so I am not nessesarily judging it by today's standards and using an assassins creed syndicate benchmark. assassins creed directors cut game design is the biggest reason to play the assassin's creed director's cut. This video can also serve as a regular assassin's creed review, since it still discusses assassin's creed design and assassin's creed game design, within this assassin's creed director's cut review. If you are interested in what some may call the best audiobook in English. feel free to read it online on audible where you can find the audiobook in english short

@@Raidraptor_-_Ultimate_Falcon it's fantastic game design how during the missions with the doctor and the tax collector there are a couple of beggars and insane people but the story uses them to convince you that it's the targets fault but after you kill them it gets worse the games world is so well in tuned with the gameplay and the story it put most if not all modern AAA games to shame

@@Raidraptor_-_Ultimate_Falcon It's an interesting system of escalation that I've noticed in my playthrough of assassin's Creed, it's annoying but it's cool to see. As altairs questioning whether or not what he's doing is right, you see the effects it has in your gameplay so it's not only affecting the kind of domain character, but also you as you play through realizing this is frustrating to deal with as beggars getting your way, guards are more numerous, and insane people run at you and hit you as you run from guards

Something I’ll never forget about this game happened when I tried to get up to one of the viewpoints (I believe in the rich district of Acre). It’s on top of this really tall tower in a seaside fortress, and I really had trouble getting onto the ledge that I was supposed to synchronize on. Eventually, I hit a lantern trying to climb up, and it started spinning uncontrollably until it went into orbit. But what made this even better was in AC2 where this exact ledge reappeared in the Altair flashback, and the glitch still happened.

I love that in AC1 all the enemies keep advancing and become stronger as the game goes on. They become much more aware, have more health and are tougher to beat and will counter you more. And most people don't know that there is a way for the player to keep up with the guards by doing side content and helping citizens. For example if you help citizens, more crowds will appear around your assassination targets or some npcs will grab and hold guards so you can kill them or run away.

One thing I'll touch on that wasn't in the video, the Kingdom area. It is such wasted potential, im one of those people who collected every flag in the game, and thus have a greater appreciation of the game world itself. Inside the Kingdom, there are so many cool locations that could have had interesting things, like assassinations. There is the area with the Roman ruins and you get to pillar parkour in a very janky way, there is an area where you can ride your horse across the freaking rooftops, there are a few massive enemy camps, there is that big bridge area over the ravine, and a few other locations as well. These would have been so cool as assassination setpieces and I hope we can get a remake of this game that adds side content like this in the Kingdom. Otherwise, I love this game like I do every AC, and yet again, another fantastic video.

To me AC 1 still holds a special place in my heart that no other game will ever hold. I still remember being a 10 year old boy when my parents got me my PS3. The first two games I had were CoD 4 Modern Warfare and Assassin's Creed. Back then games didn't use to have voice dubs in other languages (live in Venezuela and at the time didn't know english), so I only played games for their gameplay because I couldn't understand the story because it was in english. Assassin's Creed one was the first game I played in spanish and whose story I understood thoroughly. It blew me away how well they could mix real history with fiction and make it work so seamlessly, the themes, the atmosphere, the soundtrack it was absolutely mesmerizing when I first experienced it, and I got hooked on the franchise ever since. I know that it was repetitive and there would be a lot better and more fun games to come(like AC 2, Brotherhood and 4 which are also amazing), but AC 1 just hits different, in a way it was instrumental in molding into the person that I am now, passionate about history, philosphy and storytelling and for that I will always have fond memories of it. And when I hear that soundtrack... straight goosebumps.

The thing about this game that most of the time gets neglected is that most design decisions click when you turn off the interface and use no in-game map. It was build to be that way and even Patrice Desilets said it in the interview. It made you explore the landmarks and follow leads in bureau. It made you listen to the criers for something unusual, made you walk down on the road level and it made the world feel more alive as you'll stumble into missions naturally. Even Kingdom is made without HUD in mind. You just follow the literal signs on road forks. I thought this game was primitive until I tried HUDless approach and it took me a full week, but it was SO worth it and this game went from a "meh" to a "one of the greatest games I've ever played" and made turn off the interface in other games as much as I could. It creates a totally different experience.

You touched on it a little toward the end of the story analysis portion, but something that sets AC1 aside from the rest of the franchise (save maybe Unity) is it's tone. The game is austere in a way the others are not. By the time we get to AC2, Ezio is a swashbuckling lady's man. Even the more serious moments of that game feel like a divergence for drama, rather than being emblematic of the game's tone. AC1 is unique in this regard because the moments of levity are the exception to the rule, not the majority. Altair is arrogant, not brash. He is confident, not quippy. There's a sense that the characters in Altair's world take the world and the events there very seriously indeed. This is the foundation for the other games narratively and gameplay-wise, but the philosophy of the first game is abandoned (whether for good or bad, this a neutral statement): AC1 interrogates ideology as a result of systems, rather than a result of powerful individuals. Almost all 9 of your templar targets present as working toward one ideology for personal gain. As you learn more and kill them, each reveal in turn they are trying to achieve the best possible results within the confines of a fairly complex and oppressive system. There is a *little* bit of lazy contrarian politics that falls into false equivalency arguments - i.e. Altair saying you shouldn't burn books, and the templar offering the rejoinder of "you killing me is just like that you hypocrite" when these two things are not equivalent. There's a whole different proposal this game makes about consequentialism which then becomes *the* focus of the AC series moving forward, where the only question the following games concern themselves with until AC4 is "do the ends justify the means" which is just not a particularly interesting question (or the fatalism of the Desmond arch). Maybe it's nostalgia or just a matter of taste but AC1 sets a foundation for these action games to approach complicated philosophical questions without irony, and when the series reapproaches this in Unity/Origins, it tends to make for a more consistent and enjoyable tone and atmosphere...

for lack of a better phrase, I think AC 1 feels more grown up than anything that came after. not just that's it's serious but that is also kind of somber about it. it's hard to put into words without sounding like I'm putting them down (and I'm not), but I think 2 onwards were affected by their own popularity to the point the whole thing feels like it's deliberately trying to look like a certain kind of story and the characters written to act like character archetypes. Ezio the charming galavanting young nobleman and all the larger than life villains who love being villainous &c.

Thank you so much for this critique, I was waiting for it for a long time and thank you for stating the truth about these games, their pros, their cons etc. I have enjoyed every assassin's creed review that you have done and I'm really happy that you say what a normal assassin's creed fan would say and not siding with either side of the game's fanbase, one being the haters of the new games and the other being the haters of the older games. Personally, Assassin's Creed I is my favorite game of the series, note that I own every game up until rogue and I have played the rest and have enjoyed them all. I couldn't agree more with what you have said in this critique, thank you so much for not forgetting this game like the rest of the fanbase. Keep up the great work

I love AC1. It wasn't my first Assassin's Creed, in fact, it was my 4th, I played it after playing Rogue, Black Flag and 3, but I still loved it. The game is simple, and it's fine. I didn't even find it boring during the times I played it, since I found a pretty good way to play this game: Do 1 target per day, that's it. You have sessions of about 1 hour per day, except the first and last day, and you can finish the main storyline of the game in 9 days. And when I remember this is the first entry of the franchise, I love it even more, since I can ignore it's mistakes, because while the other games were made with the Idea already done, this game was made from 0, it is the one that started everything. And well, I also did the 100%, which is very time consuming, can vê a little stressful sometimes, but when you kill that last templar and get the last flag, finish the last achievement, oooh the sensation is amazing

My first playthrough of this game, I only did the minimum number of investigations required and every assassination devolved into me against the target supported by a 100 guards. On the second playthrough, I took my time and practised my skills. I always completed every investigation and found out that in the pause menu, you can actually view the maps, letters etc that you steal during investigations which was a huge game changer. All these small things added up and every assassination mission, I would only have to kill the target before escaping. Needless to say, the 2nd playthrough made me realise how high AC1 ranks in the franchise.

Annoyed by constant commercials made me lose interest and then eventually turned off but this is mainly down due to my own time restraints. Despite this from what I’ve seen this is a very polished in depth review the amount of detail you’ve put into this is overwhelmingly brilliant and will leave little left for anyone else to add to . So great job and despite not having the time to sit back and watch it and constantly having commercials rip into the short viewing window I had I would say this is one of the best reviews on this game especially for those with the time and an add blocker. I would harshly criticize the amount of commercials used in a video of this length. Who knows if I ever get to watch the rest I’ll enjoy it more -though I very much doubt it - you can’t usually perfect perfection

7:00 I just played through the entire game on PC with a controller. No idea what you're talking about, but otherwise this was a great video. I'm glad I found an opinion that isn't so extreme to one side or the other. I was incredibly hyped for AC1 back in the day, and when I finally got a 360 it was the first game I got, I couldnt wait. While I enjoyed it, in the end I was dissapointed, and this deflated my enthusiasm for the series for years. Replayed 1 for the first just now, and I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. Still a 7/10 for me, but a fun one instead of let down this time. I loved the focus on just getting in, assassinating, and getting out. Especially getting out, the music with the bell ringing is so awesome. Its what I looked forward to the most everytime. I understand the chase sequences are less a priority in the sequels, but either way, I'm really excited to move on to 2 and play through the series with a fresh perspective!

Just bought the director's cut 3 weeks ago after years of avoiding it since it's the first entry and I always found it primitive when watching gameplays on it before but now i'm hooked 19 hours in and I loved every bit of it still on Memory Block 4 taking my time on each memory sequence as I aim to 100% synch each memory damn I really missed out a lot and for a 14 year old game it impresses me with how the graphics still holds up with today's standards it aged gracefully but still hoping for a remake tho but the level of detail this game had for it's time, the scope and feel ubisoft really nailed it, you can really tell that this was a passion project. Btw I didn't had issues with the controls on pc since the game had controller support in ubisoft connect plugged in a 360 controller to immerse myself definitely worth it. Anyways i'll definitely spend more time cause I aim to get all flags for the sake of 100% sync regardless of it being pointless to collect wish me luck :)

If you didn't know most of the modern day story is told through cutscenes. Everything you do in the animus translates into the real world. @@MyAccount217 yeah the super repetive missions is what kills it, it’s the oddysey before oddysey, once i beat it and killed al mualim, i was like «that felt satisfying but im never playing this again» only way id considering replaying is if they give it a propper remake, better graphics, updated gameplay, better voice acting, actual mocap cutscenes like the ezio trillogy so dialogue isn’t so akward and boring. Different outfits was a missed oppertunity too, since the masyaf guards have rank based robes, blue robes with short tails and no hood, gray robe with hood and short coat tails, white robes with a brown hood and short tails, and finally the master assassin outfit which is what altair wears by default.

I view the first AC as more of a proof of concept than a genuinely great game. I always was disappointed in the direction the series went into after AC1. AC1 was more of an open world Hitman game while the later games were a lot more like GTA with it's linear missions. I did appreciate Unity for being one of the few sequels that tried to improve on AC1 but at the same time, the stealth mechanics in that game were terrible. I really hated how AC could've been a more direct stealth alternative to Hitman but instead the later games just added so much bloat and unnecessary bs. I always found AC1 and 3 to be some of the better narratives of the series too. AC2's story I never cared for much and I loathe Ezio as a character because he was just a badly written empowerment fantasy without any kind of depth. Everything about him was just a teenager's definition of what cool is. Altair's story was more interesting and it's varying shades of grey regarding the story made it more interesting than any Ezio game. Al Muliam is also a better antagonist than Ezio's 80s cartoon villains I mean rogues gallery. The only big issue I have with Altair's story in AC1 is that he starts off arrogant but there is no clear reason for it, or why he thought abandoning the rules of Creed was a great idea. I just wished it showed more of his backstory all though I still think he is a cool character and I like how the game challenges his beliefs.

I haven’t started the video but I’d wish to add something. While extremely simplistic and repetitive what this assassins creed game does better then any other release in my opinion is truly capture the essence of being an assassin and creating a truly dark wonderful atmosphere. Having to gather intel and info about your target hidden amongst the people of the world is so special and I don’t think any assassins creed game has done it as well as the original. The game’s atmosphere in my opinion is also unmatched. While it is primitive in gameplay it truly makes you feel like you’re apart of this world and that you truly understand who it is you’re trying to kill and when and where is the perfect moment. This game introduced me to one of my favorite series ever and will always be special to me because of it. Like I said I haven’t watched yet but I look forward to it. Have a great day everyone.
