These videos take a lot of time and effort so if you want to support me and the channel you can do so by clicking this link here: www.patreon.com/thatboyaqua Any corrections will be posted here: My monkey brain starts again and I mixed up the words “kilometre and mile” in my script. It was initially meant to say kilometres ahead of Odyssey and miles ahead of Valhalla” oops 😬 When talking about the fan service I want to clarify that it isn't a statement that applies to everyone and it isn't meant to be some definitive point. It was just meant as a thought dump since my thoughts were so conflicted. So don't think that I am talking about YOU as an individual or anything. I just figured it would be an interesting point of discussion and I wanted to see if others felt the same, and if not, why not.

As a Assassin's creed fan, who isn't a Ezio fan boy, nor a man hater/kassandra/female eivor simp. Gotta say, this fan base sucks these days. Also I come across far to much homophobia from many of the "fans" online. And it's normally on some sad excuse of a defense of ubisoft forcing a "canon" lead on the new games. Funny how disgustingly hateful people can get when they try to defend a video game of all things. RIP good AC fans. Where the hell did you all go. It's not like it was being a fan of AC when I was a kid at all.

my favourite side quest is one called Flea of Cyrene, where a bunch of children asks you to perform stunt jumps from high locations (top of a temple, cliff etc). There's no interesting mechanic, no deep lore or pondering questions but just seeing Bayek interacting with the children and playing along with their games is such a heart-warming moment that I just had this massive smile across my face while playing. Hell, there's even a small reference to Ezio Auditore with the quest giver is a child named Esiocles.

Origins is my favorite. I love Bayek, I love the setting, and of all the RPG-hybrid AC games, it has the best balance of old and new. It was an overhaul that didn't spit on the legacy that came before, and is genuinely the most fun of that trilogy by far. It's the only one that treats the assassin playstyle with any respect 💀

I disagree with your points on the " treats the assassin playstyle with any respect" line Because Origins actually makes it the least optimal to stealth of any of the RPG AC games. Odyessy lets you use gear to boost your Assassin stat to be able to stealth kill most everything and weaken anything left that they can be one tapped even if you're underlevelled. Valhalla has a minigame that can let you kill anyone. Origins doesn't do that. You can only upgrade your hidden blade so much so if you're underlevelled, you cannot 1 shot or do enough damage for a follow up. I also disagree on the "that didn't spit on the legacy that came before". Because Origins retcons the philosophical reason for the creed's existence. Origins treats the formation of the Assassins as something more of a superhero formation. That this is a group to protect people from outside threats rather than as a way to ensure humanity's free will. The game seems to realize this which is why the DLCs hastily have Bayek and Aya decide "hey, we should have a creed to ensure humanity's free will rather than just protect people".
@Flambingo
@Flambingo 3 жыл бұрын
@@FraserSouris If stealth mechanics all came down to "can you one-shot everyone", I'd agree with you. Origins has the best stealth AI. By far. Valhalla's is godawful, and Odyssey doesn't give you enough tools for stealth to ever be engaging. All you have are arrows and your spear in that game. And the point about the Creed's intent being 'retconned' could easily be explained by the fact that this is literally an origin story about a group that exists for hundreds of years. The Creed has changed, and will keep changing. That's just how time works.

And then they ruined it by changing the fundamental rules of their own franchise. History is set in stone. You can't choose ur own path in these games. Following a single character with goals, admirations, relationships skills etc. Is what makes each Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed. Odyssey and Valhalla imply that you can be a mass murderer of villages one minute, and then saviour of an entire island/county the next with zero repercussions. I disagree. I feel Odyessy is arguably the best of the RPG ACs. Like with stealth, Origins actually makes it the least optimal to stealth of any of the RPG AC games. The game seems to realize this which is why the DLCs hastily have Bayek and Aya decide "hey, we should have a creed to ensure humanity's free will rather than just protect people" as a last second band aid. The story also doesn't really give much of an arc to Bayek. He's still the same as he is in the start of the story as he is in the end. He never really confronts the fact that he was the one who stabbed Khemu. Even him becoming an Assassin/Hidden One is business as usual for him since it's doing what he was already doing as a medjay. Most of the Assassin formation is done by Aya, not Bayek. It's not like Odyessy where Kassandara both has a personal journey and arc and we see the Assassins from an outside perspective. The choices allow the player to have a personal experience and journey rather than play as a static character

As for the dlc, I really liked the locations of Curse of the Pharaohs but personally both dlcs just felt kinda meh and Hidden Ones felt really underwhelming. Origins is definitely my favorite of the series. The new mechanics were pretty cool but honestly it was the quality of the game world that really did it for me. You can tell they went over it with a fine tooth comb. Everywhere is oozing with detail and every region/city have their own distinct personality. Also the way things are spaced out feels perfect for me. The desert is big enough to feel immersive, but not so big it gets boring. The scenery changes often enough to stay fresh and enough vistas to soak in that it's always engaging.

I played the hell out of this when launched, leading time played on Steam for over a week or so (I rarely focus on one game that long). I had recently purchased a VR ready system and the game ran fantastically for myself, while the forums were full of people unhappy their systems couldn't 'handle' it. After a few patches, they managed to dumb it down for players with decent potato systems, and MY experience suffered because of that. If I could play it the way it released before the intense patching I'd be thrilled. Absolute jaw dropper IMO.

I disagree. I feel Odyessy is arguably the best of the RPG ACs. Like with stealth, Origins actually makes it the least optimal to stealth of any of the RPG AC games.

Not even close my mate, Bayek is terribly written, he never tries to understand anything, never takes anything seriously and the worst part is that he "created" the brotherhood just because he wanted to kill some people, I understand that the reason for the creed being created only comes in the end and also in the dlc but still, he simply doesn't feel like a solid character. Ezio had a real background, we saw him growing from a rich boy to a wise master, and in the end he always questioned the creed and its foundations, not to say the fact that he always tried to be better and not let vengeance and anger consume him

Understanding the difference in cultures between Rome and Egypt made me really love everything about Aya’s scenes. Much like Ancient Greece, the Romans lived in an incredibly patriarchal society, and they believed that because rivers flowed north in Egypt, it was an “upside down” land, and this is what caused them to allow women to hold political office. So when Aya says “he thinks a woman cannot do it”, she is not only making a statement as a woman, but also as an Egyptian, and this plays so well into the themes we see throughout the game of Egyptians being displaced by the Roman’s and having no one to defend them but Bayek and Aya.

Here's an insane fact that is so easy to miss but super strange that it's in the game at all: After completing the curse of the Pharoahs story you can find(and I shit you not) Sutek's corpse lying in Thebes somewhere(the location isn't random I just haven't touched the game in years so I don't remember. I think it's in a very small cave in the middle of nowhere?) Bayek comments on it and that's the only way I noticed it was him at all and not just some random corpse. I believe he says something about the apple being looted from his corpse? Again I think I last played this in 2017 and I had the brain of a 16 year old then. This was such a strange detail to include for literally no reason and I'm not surprised you missed it(or just didn't include it) but yeah. For anyone having an issue with dropping frame rates or stuttering: look at what your average fps is and set a framerate limit a bit below it. When it's typically around 50-60 fps, set a limit to 50. Use an external tool to limit framerate like NVIDIA Control Panel or Riva statistics tuner. This fixed 99% of stutters for me in AC Origins.

From entering tombs of the ancient past, visting some of the most beutiful temples and Alexandria, it was fantastic. And its setting gives the player the best time to be. I on the other hand had one of the games most terrifying encounters while just working Siwa, I decided to shoot a 'deaths head' Vulture to the north. I proceeded to run for my life thru town with onlookers gasping as I dodged attack after attack because I could see it's shadow in front of me while I eventually made it to water to dive and break combat. That plus earlier in the mission guards talk about how he has strange eyes (although not shown in game) leads many to believe he’s a sage. I played Odyssey not long ago. The Minotaur quest alone was awesome. The Medusa one, the family saving one. I think people kept expecting the cultists hunt to be the main, and most important thing with all else being side quests. You forget that many of the cultists were a part of other quests themselves. The total freedom of where you go, what you do next. The quality of those secondary quests being what in the older ACs would be the main quests. And the team's reward for it all? "A bloated mess". I think it'll take a few years and for AC2 lovers to be silent for this gem to be fully appreciated. I also think you can only compare Odyssey to Origins, cause it had the same quality side quests. All else was not even close. Linear action games. You can watch a video of a Greek archeologist seeing Odyssey, and being awed by the research put in, while noting they used things from many periods. IMO they had one shot at Greece, they put in all the myths, personalities, and architecture they could. They did it better than most movies ever did, or other pathetic video games like God Of War. A dumb stupid action game. AC crippled both Origins, and Odyssey. They both should have been 100% those areas and their lore. They almost are anyway till you get shunted out to Layla so the purists will be happy. And they weren't anyhow, with either. Or titles like this video's wouldn't be there. And they did hate Origins till Odyssey came out.

First time I have seen any of your videos, and I have to say - It was well worth the time spent watching this. It's always nice to see another person's perspective on this beast of a game, especially when they make very clear points and opinions. Well done. I will say however that I think this game as a whole is actually much more fleshed out than the Ezio trilogy. I loved AC 2, Brother, & even more Revelations (which I thought had the best story before this game). I think Bayek's story feels much more humanized. Ezio is cool, but starting him off as a teenager and going straight into the revenge angst doesn't give you time to feel like he was established in the world. Ezio just grows over time with it. Bayek feels as if he's one of us. He's already established and a bit of an old soul. He keeps a lot of his youthful charm with how hot and heavy he is with his wife, other women find him attractive, and he's fit and perhaps the most muscular out of all the Assassins up to that point. So he's still relatable from a youthful perspective - However, he's also a family man, a protector of the people and a matured combatant knowing how to use a ton of weapons being a Medjay. He appeals to a much larger audience when it comes to relatability. Relatability can convey a lot of emotions in stories. It's one of the reason people hate on a game, or piece of entertainment when the consumer feels the character's aren't relatable, they'll make quick mention of that. I think Bayek, at least to me, as a character, makes a lot of people feel extremely immersed, and his voice acting is top tier.

I think one of the differences in the ‘revenge’-plot is…in the other games (“they killed my family/my father etc”) there would be hope for the main charracters future; they can grow and live their own lives. In AC Origins the revenge is due to the murder of the child; Bayek has no future; his kid is dead and the sorrow hits differently!

Origins was the first Assassins Creed game i bought and i really love it, just being able to walk, run, climb and drive horses around ancient Egypt was a dream coming true, and very educational as well thanks to the Discovery Tour, the game is a little hard in the beginning if you never played an AC game before but you learn quick!

No man, no. If you played the older AC games it'd be harder. Older ones have you counter armies from full safety. Origins and then Odyssey have you use brains and at times have you run off, hide, and take some of the mobs out. It's those 2 only that started being harder, and that's why these OG fanatics hate them IMO. Valhalla went back to please them, and instead undid all the good these 2 had done.

I loved all 3. Until I didn't. Ubisoft went sar to woke and aleianted the fans to much. But more then this, ubisoft trying to force fans into playing certain ("canon") protagonists over the alternative choices of protagonist is just wrong. They sit there knowing full well that over 2 thirds of their players would rather play as alexios for example, but no, ubisoft gotta go make us play as kassandra if we want the sequel to make sense. Even tho kassandra made less sense in odyssey itself. All this mess because that company wants its fans to fix their own image of sexism. Ridiculous.

Yes, the combat Is dated, yes the world Isn’t as big as the other two, yes it isn’t as long. But did that really matter to me… No… No I did not. Origins still remains as one of my favourites In this RPG AC trilogy mainly due to the characters, world, and story. Hell I still even liked the combat since it didn’t overflow you with abilities to make you feel like a god (Especially In odyssey) Origins combat felt more punchy and more impactful, rather then spamming your best abilities In odyssey/Valhalla, one of my favourite things In the combat for Origins Is that you can actually counter those red attacks (Something you can’t do anymore In Odyssey/Valhalla) it’s mainly a risk-reward since it can still hit you like a truck.

Origins was amazing the fact that you can explore a humongous map the fact that you can swim freely you get to explore the inside of the pyramid of Giza you get all kinds of things to do from gladiatorial fights to assassinations to shipwrecks and exploration your weapons are used how they're supposed to be. No more killing 20 enemies with the hidden blade you are actually forced to use a sword and shield as realism would allow you to the weapon usage felt really appropriate. You were able to search for clues do missions that didn't feel like fillers. Also the map felt empty at times but you were also able to explore using numerous forms of transportation feel like having a hump day why don't you ride a camel feeling a little more pedestrian and sophisticated a horse may suit your needs for a valuable steed. The dialogue felt right every emotion was just you felt what the character felt as you hunted down the man responsible for your son's death. The naval combat felt like you were brought dessert by the restaurant owner on the house after dinner. By far in my opinion an S tier AC game. Also the fact that you can carry several weapons at once what's a nice touch have an enemy that needs a speedy end try the dual short swords with quick strikes. Does he have a big fella behind him with a heavy weapon? Trying to sort and shield to best stay alive to brunt the upcoming attacks the fact that you can carry two weapons at once definitely gave you an edge when it came to the versatility of your gameplay.

AC Origins is one of my favourite games of all time. Had so much fun with it. As a Hellenophile I was eagerly anticipating Odyssey, and while I like it, it just did not hit the same way Origins did. There is something about Origins... It was made with a particular love; the attention to detail, the unique and fantastical fusion of Egyptian and Greek cultures, the feeling of Alexandria being a world unto itself and then exploring ancient tombs... The characters of Cleopatra, Caesar and others... Little did I know how good I really had it.

You're wrong, this is the best Origins review out there. Listening to you at the end just talking about the consideration for your music choices made me really glad you put that amount of effort into this video, between your schooling and everything else. Thanks for that, I know I'm not alone in appreciating it. I loved playing this game, and not for the fan service etc. (I've never played another AC game so it all meant nothing to me, and tbh I think that playing this and the Hidden Ones DLC has made me keen to play the other games in the series), but mostly for the reasons you've stated here. The only regret I have is that I grinded this game to 100% completion pretty quickly, as well as unlocking all the Ubisoft gear and some of the cooler stuff from the game-shop as well (Uni-Camel), then did the same with Ghost of Tsushima when it released as well. I think I compared the two not as individual games, but in my mind made the excuse that Origins speaks for the entire AC series and decided that I didn't really want to play them all since Ghost's story left me very satisfied, whereas I (still) feel like the AC games have a bit too much going on. Also also, the discovery mode they added post launch to Origins where you can just walk around the game world and literally learn about ancient Egypt was goated, love that you could see how much effort went into trying to make this game as historically accurate as possible.

For the next several hours I was mesmerized, just walking/riding around exploring ancient Egypt and seeing all the historical sights and feeling like I was really there. I remember flying around as the eagle for hours and experiencing what it was like to be free as a bird. After the trip was over I realized that I had uncovered the vast majority of the map, meaning I had traveled almost everywhere in the game during that trip. For me personally it was always about the story of the series that i loved, yeah i thought the assassinations were cool, i thought the combat was simple but flashy, but it was always the characters, it was always what i was doing and why. I loved how the characters were written and the idea of the creed, and origins imo does it so much better than odyssey and valhalla, i was excited for Valhalla because while it was about vikings we at least actually had Assassins, but as i played through the game i realized you never actually played as a assassin but rather worked alongside them. Either way Origins is my favorite because of the story and not the gameplay
@FraserSouris
@FraserSouris 3 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I feel Origins doesn't really do that and it suffers. The characters don't really follow the creed. Because Origins retcons the philosophical reason for the creed's existence. Origins treats the formation of the Assassins as something more of a superhero formation. That this is a group to protect people from outside threats rather than as a way to ensure humanity's free will.

@@FraserSouris I can see most of your points however I feel the same way about Odyssey instead of Origins, it takes place before Origins yet treats it as if the creed had already been made. For instance in the DLC legacy of the first blade the phrase "all things are permitted" is stated with a dramatic tone as if it was a big moment when it does not matter since the creed had not been invented yet, the other issue I have with Odyssey is.................well you don't need me to tell you but it's not a AC game lmfao. Assassins aren't involved yet the entirety of the first DLC is there to make it feel as if it is but in the process ends up ruining pre established lore of the franchise such as for some reason making Darius the inventor of the leap of faith? Origins was incredible to me because it was the origins of the assassins, it was how they started, it was why they were created, and while yeah there order was extremely flawed in the beginning what order that's starting isn't? That was the point of the DLC, it was to finalize and concrete the creed and what they lived by, where as Odyssey doesn't really give anything new to the history of the assassins besides the origins of the Templar and even then they weren't at all interesting like the Templar of Hathem, Al Mualim, or even Cesare, the Templar of Odyssey were a group of worshiping fanatics with the head of them being the only one with any character. As for characters I loved Bayec because of his personal reasons to fight, his conviction to keep going and as he puts it in this video the fact that unlike every other character he and Aya take pride and joy in there revenge and killing, I like a good comedy or funny moment in my games however I don't want it to be the soul of the game, Odyssey for me felt like it was constantly telling jokes and while a couple landed most didn't, I vehemently disliked Alexios/Kasandra there personal reasons to fight were great and I loved the family dilemma the game built up but it's just not as strong as Bayecs son dying from his own blade. At the end of the day the core and passion of these games story comes from its creed, the dilemma its characters need to face to uphold rules and standards of the brotherhood, and the struggles of the order itself against the Templars, Odyssey was a terrible step down from that because it quite literally didn't have a creed, a order, or a brotherhood, all it had was a normal story about the problems of a dysfunctional family. Like the good old saying goes, Odyssey is a good game, just not a good assassins creed game
