I really don't think Disney is owning Doctor Who as much as some people think. They're a distributor and not the production company nor even the main distributor - that's BBC1. The Davros change was dumb - but Disney does not have super duper creative control - it's not like Star Wars where they straight up bought it. The situation with the snowman part was a note that RTD accepted, and notes are common for practically all distributer screenings. The prolouge scene in LOTR wouldn't have been there if lot for a note.

See the principal of resetting the numbering idm in general. My friend once made a suggestion of how to categories it and such. But there’s a fundamental reason why this doesn’t work for me… The show really doesn’t feel like it’s made that big of a shift. If anything it’s gone more backwards than it ever has. No original logo, the title sequence is pretty standard for who, the same composer, same writer, same production team. Nothings actually hit a reset button and the tone and feel of the show doesn’t actually feel far off from what it was. Compare that to the shift from Season 26 and Series 1. There’s a clear shift in vision and outlook on the show. I think even RTD has gone slightly more traditional since his first era. Idk, I think the show should only ever reset when the creative vision behind it dictates that it should.
@dwfan91-11 ай бұрын
I 100% agree on every point. "Don't hold onto the past" is something I've heard being said but as you say we have an old actor to play the Doctor having returned, the old showrunner and production team returning and even an old logo coming back. If the show actually committed to a reset and felt different then I would not only "not mind" but I would celebrate it. As I say in the video, the idea of a seasonal reset has been something that's gone over all our minds before but if you're doing it just for the sake of doing it, I'd rather we just kept on building on what we had before.

I really think it was dumb that the 60th specials weren’t at the end of NuWho. New fans who will go straight for the new series will have a confusing bunch of episodes to say the least which are very referential to the past. They should have started with Ruby Road and just called it episode 1 🙄
@HOTD108_11 ай бұрын
The 60th isn't a part of the upcoming season 1 though, meaning new fans probably won't watch them, so this isn't really an issue. None of the specials were funded by Disney, they were just hosted on their service, so the specials are basically meant to be a goodbye to the old NuWho whilst setting up Ncuti's Doctor in the 4th special to give old fans an idea of if they want to keep watching or not. In other words, Church of Ruby Road was less a intro for new fans and more a litmus test for old fans. I'm certain that the first episode of season 1, which hasn't aired yet, will act as another reintroduction because that's when the reboot starts proper.

The rebrand/reboot to “Season 1” is as a result of Disney+ handling the streaming outside of the UK, no more, no less. Prior to the Disney merger there was no talk of a reset and fans were also assured that, once allied to the ‘House of Mouse’, there would be no influence or interference - something that was trashed once it became known that Disney had a test screening of “…Ruby Road” and insisted that the scene of Ncuti Gatwa with the falling snowman was filmed and inserted (originally this scene didn’t exist). And so it is that, for all that RTD is back and it’s still a BBC show, effectively Disney (and Disney’s cash) is “calling the shots”.

So he writes a script, hires other writers, makes sure the actors are available, gets the set, films basically a short movie (if you put all 6 parts together) and gets it out to the public- Puts in all that hard work and then gets bombarded with messages on social media that it sucks because it's not available worldwide. Another good video. The only thing I really take issue with is the implication that the showrunner has much control over the episode count. I believe that has much more to do with the show's budget, so the choice is between longer gaps between seasons, fewer episodes per season, or cutting the special effects and filming time. And if Russell ditches Disney, he'd have to find a replacement cosponsor, or the show would suffer cuts in at least 2 out of 3 of those things.

I think you're slightly overstating Disney's influence a little bit. Disney can give notes but that's it, and thus far their notes have been positive: for example originally Ncuti's Doctor was in his first episode LESS than what we ended up getting, which Disney noted to RTD that they feel the Doctor should be in it more so he wrote a new scene to insert into the episode heavily featuring Ncuti. And notes being given isn't new, the BBC would do the same thing in the past, it's part of the process really. And RTD has said that the british-ness of Doctor Who will not be changed, it will remain as quintessentially British and Doctor Who as it has always been.

I'd love to hear your opinions on Spider-Man and I completely understand the point about comics and reboots in comparison to what they're doing in New Who. It happens with some series as well, where they keep the creative teams and just jump it back to a #1 issue after a year, just to try and boost the dwindling sales. Obviously, RTD wants to do the same wirh Doctor Who, but unlike with comics, we don't have any big starting points. Ncuti's whole backstory is mired in 13 and 14's history and I don't think eight episodes is enough to properly explore both he and Ruby's characters in an effective manner. I think one good comparison is with Superior Spider-Man. The Superior story was built off around five years of history prior to it, and One More day was based off decades of history before the soft reboot of Spider-Man, kinda like the break between Old and New Who, making Superior Newer Who. It is really silly to break with the series numbering for an arbitrary reason, because you can't get into Ncuti without having an awareness of what came before.

The season 15 trailer was an anomaly compared to the usual upload on the official KZbin channel, which garnered attention due to popular iconography in the thumbnail and title (daleks, timelords, gallifrey), which is undeniable when compared to the views on other season collection trailers. Honestly, I don't see a point in discussing the "reboot" of the show. Technically it meets the definition. However after Steven Moffat took over and after that Chris Chibnall, those also felt like reboots especially by a regular non Doctor who standard. Now we have another shift with showrunners and on top of that disney plus integration. Debating things like the change of the branding and other superficial things does not seems relevant considering changes in cast, look, sets, etc.are part for the course for this show. Maybe I got that wrong, but you seemed to have a big issue with restarting the numbering of the show. I really don't understand why that should be a problem or seem like too big an interference. The reasoning seems quite simple. Disney plus does not have and for the foreseeable future will not have the rights to any episodes prior to the Star Beast. If they want to promote the show for new audiences, it is hard to do, when the only content you have to start off is series 14. From a viewer perspective, you would not be interested in the show which starts with series 14 with no way of seeing series 1. I really don't think there was much else at play.

Yoir point is very muddled. You say that people dont want franchises, citing the MCUs recent failure as an example, but then say that audiences want something familiar and long running - which I'd say also describes the MCU fairly well. A big factor in The Marvels underperformance seems to be audience assumption that the Disney+ shows were homework to understand what happens (among other factors that a lot of content grifters are applying to Dr Who). Surely the same problem would be present if trying to sell the 14th season of a show. Season 1 feels like, from marketing so far, it's using the concept of jumping on points in the show and bringing them front and center to a new audience (the fact that the specials barely accommodate that audience notwithstanding, I say this with the assumption that S1x01 is going to be a perfect jumping on point for new viewers) Honestly, I'd personally do away with the numbering at this point and just go with subtitles like Flux did. As they're banking this in advance, they know how connected different seasons could be, so they could make sure Arcs full under the same banner, similar to what Big Finish do with their box sets. Call series 5-6 The Silence Arc Chapters One through Three and let the die hards argue over the numbers 😂
@dwfan91-11 ай бұрын
Sadly I think you misunderstand. The words I use is people "barely want franchises," which is true. A lot of people *say* they want something original but we all know that franchises do sell the best regardless of what people say. Whats important to note however is the fact that we've had so many big franchise movies (from DC to Marvel to even the 'Monsterverse' and the Sonyverse, Disney Animated Movies, Pixar etc) underperform- so much so to the point where it becomes clear you can't really get away with it as much anymore. On a different note- I agree that the subtitle approach would be far more appropriate, especially given the reduced episode count.

@video-luver76911 ай бұрын
I can't believe this needs to be explained but I can guarantee the soft reboot is happening ENTIRELY due to the fandom's overall poor reception to the Chibnall era and the Timeless Child, specifically. People forget that for the past three series in a row the BBC was outright threatening cancellation. THAT'S why RTD has accepted the Disney funding. It's because the BBC has simultaneously cut funding to DW. Without this lifeline it's entirely likely the series wouldn't be getting a new "Season 1" at all right now.
@dwfan91-11 ай бұрын
I disagree. If that were true when why are we continuing the timeless child plotline? It was resolved at the end of Flux, there is no reason to pursue it outside of Russell T Davies wanting to. We all know by now that Doctor Who was in danger of being put on hiatus after Series 10 and after COVID and that Chris Chibnall saved the show twice, but I don't remember there being talks that the show was in trouble after S11.
@video-luver76911 ай бұрын
@@dwfan91- I mean, it's not so much that they're shying away from that part of the storline as much as they just want an otherwise clean sweep from the entire production of Chibnall Who. That's the reason they made sure to ditch all the previous companions, didn't even have Jodie in the 60th, and have barely mentioned anything about the aftermath of the Flux. It seems that Timeless Child just happens to be one plot thread that RTD does like and apparently he plans to play around with it in the future. But even that's been heavily toned down.
@dwfan91-11 ай бұрын
@@video-luver769 It'd be pretty weird to bring Jodie back one episode after she left- Flux was name dropped 2 times in three episodes and the timeless child stuff has arguably been toned *up* I don't think theres any evidence that this is in response to "Chibnall Who," if anything their clear respect of the era that just came before is one of the positives. They've already acknowledged it far more than they needed to or I ever expected them to
@ForTheLoveOfWho10 ай бұрын
This isn't true. Doctor Who contributed to the BBC making record profits in 2021. It was the second most streamed show on BBC Iplayer in 2022, and Doctor Who Flux toped the Official TV On Video Chart for three consecutive weeks in a row; it was in the top 10 for ten, and Jodie Whittaker nearly dethroned David in the 2020 Radio Times Top Doctor poll. Saying that the fandom had an overall poor reception of the Chibnall era and the Timeless Child doesn't make it true. It may have been divisive online, but most things are. Besides, if something is divisive, it means that there are people who don't like it, but it also means that there are those who do. As for the funding, it wasn't cut. Doctor Who has always had a comparatively low budget; nothing had changed.

Same with Star Wars…Mandolorian season 1 and 2 was great. After that the Disney formula killed it. Andor was great….but I fear for season 2. And Doctor Who does not feel like Doctor Who. Ncuti does not seem to be the Doctor to me. The stories are spotty…some enjoyable some not. But none feel like Doctor who. Almost. But not really. And the only thing I can see that is different is Disney.

Those 13 series do still exist, the show is still directly following on from them and actual new viewers will be completely lost as to what is happening. There are times when its good to fall back on legacy and times when its good to stand on your own two feet and I think right now, resetting to Series 1 is just about the worst decision they could've made

Finally after almost ten years there's a place I can watch new episodes in my country and I wouldn’t want to go back to how it was before. I don't believe Doctor Who will ever become like a Disney+ show, as it has the ability to tell more imaginative stories than any other intellectually bankrupt Disney franchise. Nothings really gonna change, we have RTD back, some of the same writers, some new ones, the formats gonna be the same, the Christmas specials are back, a fantastic looking new TARDIS, which I must admit had my daughter and myself cheering and going wow, Disney won’t be fundamentally changing things, just making it more accessible to more people and throwing some money at it to give it a more polished feel, all I’m saying is really is to give it a chance, I really don’t know how anyone can judge and condemn a show after the 60th anniversary trilogy, which I got for Christmas on Blu-ray, and the Christmas special. RTD brought the show back, us who are old enough remember it being taken off the air in 1989, and. I seriously hope that doesn’t happen again, it might though if you negative Nancy’s out there start hating on it again so soon after the Chibnell era, you may as well get yourselves a hammer and a bag of nails and start bashing them into Dr Who’s coffin lid now. Stop hating on it because they’ve reverted to season 1 again, it’s just a number, doesn’t mean they discount all that’s gone before, and stop hating on Disney, are the ones who are going to financially back the program and show it to a larger audience, I for one am really looking forward to the new season and I’m old school, I grew up with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, and personally I don’t think the show has diminished, there have been good and bad episodes in the new Who run, we had that back in the 70’s, didn’t mean it was all rubbish and was doomed to fail, it only failed first time around because of Michael Grade, who hated sci-fi in all its forms, he even tried to get it banned for good when RTD was trying to resurrect it; and you never know, there may be a Michael Grade type waiting in the wings to do it all over again, don’t give them any help in the matter.

I'm not hating. For the record, if I didn't make it clear in the video enough, I have nothing against the new era, Russell T Davies, Ncuti Gatwa or anyone. In fact I was very positive to all the episodes. I'm glad you and your daughter enjoyed the reveal of the new TARDIS interior, I similarly enjoyed it. My argument is simply that if we're reverting the logo, have old faces coming back constantly and are continuing on the plotlines of the previous series, why would we reset the numbering? I don't want Disney to get their paws on my favourite show in the world, simple as that

@@ManiBatchelor But season 1 is being designed so viewers can jump on here too. The season hasn't even aired yet, so we don't know whether it will refer to recent events. I'm guessing it will connect back to the 60th through the characters of Kate, Mel, and Rose, but it wouldn't be that hard to reintroduce those character through the eyes of Ruby like how Rose met Sarah Jane in series 2. In terms of attracting new viewers, imagine they see this show on Disney+ called Doctor Who. They click on it, and the first thing they see is listed as series 14. Now probably two things will pop into their heads. 1. Where's series 1-13? 2. I have to watch 13 other series on a different streaming service just to watch this new Disney+ stuff Most people wouldn't decide to watch based on just these two things alone, but if it's listed as season 1 this will give new viewer the immediate impression that this is a start, and that no prior knowledge is need (like what Moffat did naming Series 10 Episode 1 the Pilot)

@@brewster_4 Thank you very much for asking me questions instead of jumping to conclusions as your fellow travelers have done. Alas, you only get half credit, as only one question is fair, so I am entitled to a smidgeon of contumely. I'll answer your second question and then the first. Then I'll give you some information on why this is particularly important to me and another chance to think about what I am saying and respond. This opportunity is only for you and not any idiot fellow travelers. First, the second question is in extremely bad faith, and I daresay you knew that when you asked it. Eccleston signed a contract with the BBC. As they all do, it contains a non-disclosure or do not discuss clause. If Eccleston were to talk about it, he could be held liable for all the money they paid him plus nine times that amount for punitive damages. He is not so stupid as to break that. His "sack Russel T. Davies" moment came close, but was legalistically worded so that he could defend himself against court action and probably win. I am certainly not going to endanger him by disclosing private information, because I respect him. Now for the first question. I am limiting my answer to text and paratext, things you can easily verify for yourself. I'm going to cover _Queer as Folk,_ the Eccleston year, and the four 60th specials or three 60th specials plus Christmas special or first episode, whatever, depending on whether we've always been at war with Eastasia or Eurasia this week. Note that _QaF_ and the reboot are not definitive or disposative; they just provide additional information consistent with the rest. I have only seen snippets of _QaF,_ so I can't give corroborating evidence others have told me about. But that was when Rose 0 was introduced. She was the _little red girl_ so sexy that a 100% gay man could go for. Now for Rose 1 in the Eccleston era. She was young enough to stay at home. Rose's mother flirted with him and then did the "you're what, 40?" thing, of course to remind us that The Doctor is way over 40. This resembles the mother/daughter sexual tension and competition common in dysfunctional families. I've seen people say that Rose should have been creeped out by when The Doctor took her hand. Then there's the "You need a Doctor" scene, which others complained was too sexual. Note that people objected to McGann's Doctor's kiss, which to me seemed natural, and Eccleston's was evidently steamier. This is not definitive precisely because Eccleston is such a good actor and was able to keep the nookie at bay with acting, as I mentioned in my OP. Now for "The Star Beast." Rose 2 is a _15-year-old kid._ That's too young to consent to sex or bottom surgery in the UK. She's played by Finney, who was 19 but may have been 18 at the time (I don't know) but clearly an adult. She's dolled up in a way that the cash-strapped Nobles would not have been able to afford for a shopping trip. The result is that she looks older. In more natural photos, she looks her age, which is still a bit of a stretch but might have been fixed with behavioral affectations of youth, which Finney did not use at all. We know how Donna uses the term _gorgeous_ because she applied it to her mostly virtual husband back in the Vashta Nerada days. It's clearly sexualizing, as it is in almost all instances. Even when applied to, say, artwork, it connotes a certain lush. We also know from the same days that she would be an excellent mother. Yet Donna and the rest of the family consistently calls Rose _gorgeous._ Not _pretty_ or even _cute,_ which would be age-appropriate, though the latter has sexual connotations for adults but none for children, and Rose 2 is between. Sylvia wonders if it's sexist to keep calling Rose 2 _gorgeous._ Of course it is. It's Gender Studies 101 that you don't repeatedly call attention to a teenage girl's looks because it makes her believe her sexual appeal is her only positive attribute and often leads to self-destructive behaviors such as bulemia and cutting. When we get the dead-naming scene, it looks and is intended to look like a bunch of kids hassling an adult. RTD also did a publicity photo shoot with Finney dolled up as Rose 2 carrying a shopping bag with a smiley face with hearts for eyes. Perhaps actual Kubrick _Lolita_ glasses would lack subtlety. I won't say much about _Wild Blue Yonder,_ because the problem with that is mostly racism. Now for _The Giggle._ The Toymaker establishes that _little red girl all grown up_ Donna always had the balls in the relationship. At the end, Tennant's Doctor is put to pasture as bottom to Donna's top. Now for _The Church on Ruby Road._ Reportedly, the nightclub scene was a long-time fantasy by RTD. Consider a new viewer, who has no idea who The Doctor is, seeing that for the first time. 31-year-old Gatwa has been stalking Ruby, a 19-year-old Ruby, another _little red girl._ He uses an admittedly clever alcohol-based pick-up line on Ruby, and it isn't long before she is jumping in his arms. The United States, where Disney is located, has a federal minimum drinking age of 21. It is not _crazy_ so say that the falling snowman scene, establishing that The Doctor is a good guy on the side of The Law, shifts away enough cringe to be palatable. We also have the fact of a stated subplot where Gatwa's Doctor was going to _plook_ Ruby's boyfriend or at least try. Not only is this kinda sus, but it would have taken a great deal more setup than the remnant of Ruby's character will be allowed, belying the idea that Ruby was planned only to appear a few times in the first season. Once again, it is not _crazy_ to suggest that only strangulation of the purse strings by Disney could have made such a change. There's more, but I'll stop here, because that is enough. As Haruki Murakami said, if you can't understand it without an explanation, you can't understand it with an explanation. Now, it would be preternaturally stupid to try to argue with me, by saying that isn't *real* hebephilia or I'm overreacting or overthinking or it's just a teevee show or kids wouldn't notice or whatever. For one thing, you haven't asked what my opinions on those statements are, which is good, because neither yours or mine are relevant in the slightest. What *is* relevant is that RTD has tied up with a pretty red ribbon a thermonuclear device for the Right to use to genocide LGBTQ+ people. After RTD put all this up on the screen, it will never again be possible to counter the Right's claims associating LGBTQ+ with grooming. Part of the reason that _QaF_ and the reboot are not determinative is that both are considered adult shows in the United States. Yet RTD has specifically stated that the 60th onward is explicitly for sending messages to kids. When the Right wants to say, "they're coming for your kids," all they'll have to do is point. No claims that they are making it up will work. Neither I nor anybody will be able to point to any LGBTQ+ influencers and presenters who are pushing back on this transphobia and homophobia, *because there evidently aren't any.* This is a misstep greater than Oscar Wilde turning a losing defamation lawsuit into pontification over The Love that Dare Not Speak Its Name. The Right is retarded, but if you do not think they will get around to it, consider this. They are already showing _Kill the Moon_ in churches to put across their pro-death anti-abortion policies, and that is typically the only episode their flock ever sees. Now here's why I care so much. Though you lot all seem to be picking your noses over this, *I personally do not want to accelerate the genocide.* I particularly do not want to give the right free ammunition. This is why I pay attention to messages you lot simply cannot be arsed to think about at all. I have a particular stake in the matter because *I am a casualty in the genocide.* This is why I am Dead Man. If you look at the top, you will see a little circle next to my name. It contains an image of the *written death threat* issued to me about halfway into being physically tortured by being prevented from sleeping for more than three weeks into pleading guilty to doing something which I did but which was *not against the law.* Please do not bother telling me that you cannot believe this based on your experience with sleep deprivation. You have already demonstrated your brain isn't all that, though it is evidently better than your fellow travelers, which is why this message is for you. I'm sure it's too long for them to read anyway. I've learned from Robert Sapolsky that neurogenesis happens in the hippocampus, but it still took a year for mine to grow back to a level of basic competence. I published a book with my writings during that time partially to demonstrate how brain damage affected me. I'm writing another book nobody will read which will go with my channel nobody watches, but I have no idea how I'm going to pay to print it. I do have a small pension from my stint as a university professor, but I only have $201 after monthly rent, and getting a supplementary income as a convicted felon on the registry is not as easy as you may assume. If you click on that and get some information from my videos and think a bit about what I have clearly and truthfully said, then I will be willing to continue the conversation. If that's just too much for you, and you continue to insist on believing the first impression that ding-dongs into your consciousness, then not so much.

Side note- i could listen to you forever 💙💙✨🫶 but yes ...i agree in 2005 is made sense, Heck! Moff pushed to take Doctor Who global and pushed it on ... And it worked in 2013 it broke records and had colossal acclaim ... 2018 chibnall did similar too snd thst worked ... Now this seems to be more of the samr FLUX was a start of where we could go ... But yet eek! Ill watch it because Doctor Who is my fave ....love thsr you brought Buffy up too its so influential .... Doctor Who needs to be the leader now not following

indeed, dr who needs to lead not follow, and hope Russel has realized this and makes dr who on disney a superior show on there by quality and being an outside stand alone with quality and it's own spin offs, rather than just trying to fit in.

@@The_Nordic_Doctor I mean .... Besides the fans watching it anyway HOW would those episodes we've just had appeal to new eyes?! The eleventh hour, the woman who fell to earth etc harnesses a huge audience and nailed it whilst still referring to what happened before and remained unique and not to bogged down with prior knowledge needed as such ...whereas we got three hours of nothing much happening followed by the start of the new era that very much is tied to those said specials ....it's not EXCITING new show it's ...tired sadly it needs new voices
