I actually liked the Jon chapters. I like the internal politicking of the wall and one of my favorite moments is when he is accused of treason for letting in the wildlings and Jon points out the wildlings are men so they should protect them. It’s an understated hero moment for me.

Jon 4: Stannis either not knowing or acknowledging the Mountain Clans does make sense in world, as it shows the possible flaws of the Maester education system and the disconnect between Northern and Southern culture. The Clans not having castles or large settlements means they have no maester presence and therefore only represented by the writings of Maesters from Winterfell and a few other Northern castles. These maesters may take little interest in the Clan histories and society until they come into contact with their lords hold. We also don't know how much contact Stannis had with the Northern lords after the lifting of Storms End, or to which Lords he would chose to socialise with, so it is possible thar he may have been taught to recognise the house sigil by the maesters but have no real context of whom the current lord or people are like. On a writing point GRRM could be showing Stannis testing Jon to see if he did learn how to rule the North from Ned and therefore could be trusted as a competent lord of Winterfell, or GRRM could be using it to show Stannis is ignorant of Northern culture but is willing to take advice and learn in order to improve his strength.

Totally agree. Stannis could just be testing Jon. And plus GRRM needs to explain it to the reader. And maybe Stannis does not know everything.
@tenkenroo

I think that the maesters who are assigned to certain castles probably have a specialty for that region maybe. Cause if you are assigned to the north and know more about vale politics than you are at a disadvantage. I think if stannis was asked about petty lords in the stormlands he would know all about them but small lords with no keeps in the vast north that’s doubtful.
@JELazarus

Stannis could have been testing Jon with the mountain clans talk. Like, he knew of their existence, and maybe even knew they could be helpful allies, but wanted to see if Jon would be forthcoming in this. He still doesn't know Jon super well at this point. They've had some interactions, and he knows Jon as the son of Ned Stark, but this is a chance for Stannis to see what Jon knows, how much he is willing to share. If Jon doesn't mention the mountain clans, does that mean he's offering "half his loyalty"? The Mannis is no dummy. This could all be subtle info gathering on Jon's character. I'll have to reread that part again to be sure.
@TheDelinear

This was my thought too - after all, Stannis is specifically lining Jon up for the next Lord of Winterfell. He needs to be sure that this man understands the lands and also that he is keeping nothing back.

There would be merit to testing Jon's loyalty, but not by presenting yourself as a total dumbass. Imagine you're invading Iraq, talking to some local tribal head, and he goes 'and yeah, you talked to the Kurds?' Now, would it make sense to test his loyalty by going 'the Kurds? I only see a bunch of mountains there my dude, what's a Kurds?' Because at that point you might just convince the guy you don't even know what part of the world you just invaded, and that is not the image Stannis is trying to project. He's not hiding his knowledge about small specific detail, he's not acting as if he has general knowledge but isn't an expert, he's pointing at a part of the map that stretches for hundreds of kilometers, and saying 'what, there's people living there? I didn't know that.' That's just plain stupid, and considering he wants to impress Jon and turn him to his side, that doesn't make sense. Even if he genuinely had zero knowledge about it, it's just such a giant stretch of land with nothing making it inhospitable to life, that if a map showed no castles, forts or towns there, anyone with two brain cells would assume that the map is wrong or lacking. Imagine a French crusader trying to test the loyalty Slavic nobility by saying 'oh, you mean you have other cities than Kiev? They weren't on my map! How strange!' Real smart move.

Tyrion IV is one of my all time favourite chapters in all of ASOIF. I really love the chapters where "nothing happens" - where it's usually just the characters travelling from one location to the next and you get to see and "experience" Planetos "firsthand" - and this is one of the very best (with the Brienne travelling chapters in A Feast for Crows that feature Nimble Dick and Septon Meribald and Dog also massive favourites). It's pure bliss to have Tyrion so unexpectedly contented given his uncertain circumstances at that point, while at the same time physically struggling from detoxing from his alcoholism. The Rhoyne is painted so beautifully by GRRM and the sense of place is just wonderfully conveyed. I've always found Essos more interesting than Westeros, and to have Essos's terrain experienced through the eyes of a Westerosi is unexpectedly marvelous. I also love all of Dany's chapters in A Dance with Dragons. They are so entertaining and something unexpected or interesting - or both - always happens. I especially love the last chapter, where she's in the Dothraki Sea, experiencing diarrhea and possibly a miscarriage or her period, before Drogon flies overhead and they encounter the Dothraki. Dany's mind is probably my favourite perspective in ASOIAF, because she's so bright, always conscious of her intentions, compassionate and yes, funny; but at the same time also just a giant earnest doofus. I know the mentally scarred characters and the ones with obvious antisocial disorders constitute most fans' idea of great writing - and Theon and Cersei etc. are great, don't get me wrong - but the way GRRM succeeds in making a genuinely good and mentally stable person (for the most part) who wishes to do well so fascinating is in my opinion a harder task.

I think you got the clues right but the conclusion wrong when it comes to Locusts. Dany *was* the target. The issue at hand is that *killing* Dany wasn't the target. Shavepate could give her poisoned locusts, food he knew Hizdahr would refuse, to make Dany suspiciously ill and then accuse Hizdahr of poisoning her. Egzamined locusts would be poisoned and Hizdahr would be the one who refused to eat them. That's Shavepate's ticket to power.

Agreed on Theon and Jon. But I feel like I'm the only person who enjoys Daenerys' chapters. They're not necessarily the most exciting, but from a potential story arc, I'm most intrigued by the potential for Stannis v Dany and even if she turns out to be a just ruler, how will Stannis handle her claim to the iron throne. I also like the whole idea of Dany honing her craft in Meereen.
@mightykaiser8058
@mightykaiser8058 2 жыл бұрын
I like Dany chapters too in Dance, but I don't think Dany vs Stannis is ever happening. She currently has to deal with the Dothraki, then consolidate her power in Meereen, then pass through Volantis (probably Pentos as well), then deal with Aegon in Westeros and perhaps Euron as well. By the time she cleans up the south, I'm guessing Stannis will already be dead in the North. Remember, we only have two books left to finish the story, and all this isn't even factoring in the battle with the WW. Still, it would be fascinating to hear what Stannis would have to say about Danys claim and what sort of justifications he would use to deny it.

I feel like the showrunners did Stannis dirty, because he was more popular than Dany. In the same episode, we saw Dany ride a dragon in an epic moment, and Stannis burn his daughter in a monsterous moment. Book Stannis has shown enough backbone and character, that he wouldn't resort to human sacrifice that quickly. And we know that things like Ramsay and Ser Twenty Goodman burning down the camp, won't happen in the book. Yes, Stannis may lose in Winds of Winter, but I feel that he won't go out like a total monster.

I just found out recently that Shade of the Evening is made from Shadewood trees that have black bark and blue leaves. I assume "Jojen paste" is the equivalent of shade of the evening. I wonder if that means there's a "shadewood net" and a Bloodraven equivalent out beyond the 5 forts. Also, I'm guessing the House of Black and White's doors are made of weirwood and shadewood. I wonder if that means that the faceless men's power is some weird combination of both side's magic.

The Shade of the Evening equivalent to Weirwood net is the House of the Undying. Both are magic locations with strange trees where POV characters trip balls and get sent visions from a shadowy collective with mysterious allegiances and motivations. If the parallel holds up, the fact that the warlocks vow to get revenge on Dany after Drogon kills the Undying is interesting. Maybe Summer kills Bloodraven and the Children turn on Bran and company? Quick note on his Honorable Mention (Jon IV): House Norrey, Flint, Wull, etc. are far from being major houses that fought in Robert’s Rebellion; they’re so unbelievably minor. The major houses in the war would be the obvious ones (I.e., Baratheon, Stark, Targaryen, Arryn, Tully, Martell, Tyrell, Redwyne, Tarly, Lannister at the last minute). Nobody knows or cares what the mountain clans did during Robert’s Rebellion. Plus, Stannis didn’t really fight alongside the Northmen all that much since he was getting sieged at Storm’s End for the majority of the war. And since they are just considered at best “petty lords” and not a part of the Great houses or minor houses of the realm, Stannis probably wouldn’t have known or cared about the self-identified “mountain clans”. I totally buy that Jon had useful information about the North (his home) that Stannis understandably just wouldn’t have known about. Also, the moment really wasn’t put there to make Jon look cool necessarily; it was there to show that Jon was definitely allowing his bias guide his decision to help Stannis against the Boltons, the house that killed his brother.
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin

A Norrey was Cregan Stark's wife and the house marches with Robb. Stannis, the man who knows every house in Westeros and who was raised by a maester, wouldn't know about House Norrey?
@ghoulishfool
@ghoulishfool 2 жыл бұрын
@@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin The way I see it is that there are 3 different classifications of noble houses in Westeros. First, you have your Great Houses, which would be the Lords Paramount of each respective kingdom (i.e. Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, Tully, etc.). Second, you have your minor houses, which are the main supporting houses of each kingdom (Manderly, Swyft, Dondarrion, Frey, etc.). I think maesters are really only concerned with these two types of houses when it comes to their education, as well as what they teach lords, ladies, and lordlings. The third and final type of noble house would be the petty lords. These are the houses that are barely highborn and their seats are usually holdfasts and the sort. Maybe Cressen didn’t busy himself with the petty lords of each kingdom. He probably did for the petty lords of the Stormlands because they were the ones Robert, Stannis and Renly would need to know. Just like how Luwin told the Stark boys and Jon about House Norrey, Flint, Wull and so on. Petty lords only really matter to the noble houses that rule over those specific petty lords. As far as that quote stating that Stannis knowing every house in Westeros, I think that’s more hyperbole than anything. I could believe that he might know the strength of every Great and minor house of the realm, but not necessarily the petty lords. Plus, the Norreys, Wulls, Flints and so on are more commonly thought as “mountain clans” than petty lords. Like I said, they are barely and only technically highborn. And they look completely different from any other “noble” house we’ve before, as showcased in the Wayward Bride chapter. They’re more wildling than highborn. But I appreciate the discussion, love the list by the way!

Yeah this video pretty much underscores why I do my best to pretend that the show never happened. Because they pretty much adapted everything through ASOS and then started doing their own dumb fan fiction. It’s why I can’t take seriously anyone who acts like the books are going to have the same ending - or even close to the same ending - as the show. I mean, they’re wildly different from AFFC onwards to the point where the show barely resembles those last two books at all.

Also the first " Reek " chapter is as good as it's unsettling and disturbing . " The Griffin Reborn " chapter is one I really enjoyed too , getting inside Cunnington's mind to see his inner thoughts and motives was really interesting .

Ok, so with Kingbreaker I beg to disagree. I think that Selmy made the decision to take down Hizdarh earlier when he saw how Hizdarh had reacted to Groleo's head being sent by Yunkish. Selmy compared Hizdarh reaction to the behaviour of the three Westerosi kings: Jaehaerys, Aerys and Robert. He thought that these three kings would be outraged (albeit in different manner) while Hizdarh is... kind of... surprised and... mildly displeased. It seems to me that Selmy thought that Hizdarh is a traitor, a puppet king that had conspired with Yunkai yet was betrayed by Yunkish. Or, even if Hizdarh isn't a traitor, according to Selmy he is unfit to rule. When you read this part of the text, it seems that Selmy considered Hizdarh to be a worse ruler than Aerys. Which is saying much. Of course, it is a paradox that Selmy judges Hizdarh according to the Westerosi standards. Indeed, he has no idea how should Meereenese ruler behave in such a situation. Yet it is still my belief that it's Hizdarh behaviour that mainly motivated Selmy to take him down.

I was interested to learn that PJ believes the horn has no powers. Considering it has glowing glyphs, a sound that touches the soul, and it immolates the blower to death and makes him bleed, we have to admit it is magical, and is doing something. I was very compelled by PJs original notion that it bound people. It would make sense since the blower dies, therefore the only people who can use the horn are people who own people: slavers. However, nowadays I am thinking it does bind dragons. Why? Because there are three dragons, and therefore they have to be divided amongst three sides. Dany will have Drogon, Viserion will be owned by the Others. But rhaegal? I think he will be bound by the Ironborn. He’s green, and they represent the sea. David Lightbringer brilliantly unpacks the recurrence of Green Sea / green sea dragons thought the series. After the Ironborn are finished with him, it’s possible Jon may possess him.

I don’t see why stannis would know the mountain clans. They have no keeps they are extremely petty lords. While stannis has a good grasp on the major strengths but nobody really know all the tiny lords. It would be like Doran martell knowing about davos and his sons before the war of five kings. It’s possible stannis saw wull after Ned broke the siege but it would be in passing. While stannis is brilliant he’s somewhat like Robert with a lack of patience and wants to just head to the dreadfort. Stannis I think after the blackwater was extremely humbled and instead of listening to high lords for his council ( who fucked up everything in blackwater) is listening to people who actually have some humility like davos or Jon and realizes that’s been better for him.

My recommendation: Prepping For Winter/Overanalyzing House of the Dragon except for instead of reading into every word of text in a shit book like Fire and Blood, you do the best chapters in Dance. When you say the chapter in your honorable mention you state Stannis should know about the mountain clan because they rode with Ned stark in the rebellion and that the scene was only meant to make jon look cool. If I’m not mistaken Stannis spent the entire Rebellion defending dragonstone from high gardens lord and wouldn’t know of every single house that rode with the north. He also wouldn’t have been there for the battle of the trident but I only read the books once, Somebody correct me if im wrong. (If I’m right jon is just cool and Stannis lame as always suck it king of nothing!!!)

Nah you are correct. Stannis was stuck at the siege of storms end for the war of five kings. The only chance he would have to meet one of the mountain clans was a wull in neds crew that rode to dorne but he would not have stayed long and doubtful stannis would talk to a lord so below his station. After the siege stannis was instructed to head to dragonstone to capture dany and viserys.

Wow, no Davos? No Jamie? I kinda expected them in TOP 5. Jamie I just encapsulates Jamie getting a better man without never really forgoing his authority and it is beautifuly done. His chat with Blackwood is incredible. Davos's final chapter with Vayman Manderly is so engaging for obvious reasons. But even Davos I gets me big time. Him sitting there with this random sisterman lord should not be as good as it is, really. The end of that chapter with Ned's story from Robert's rebellion and Davos saying 'And neither was I' is one of my favorite endings in ASOIAF chapters.

Why would stannis know so much about mountain clans in the north that don't even consider themselves proper houses. A southerner like Stannis would think of them as little more than wildlings, even if they marched with Ned. Truth be told as soon as he starts looking for men in the north to serve his cause he probably should have remembered them especially since he's already considered conscription actual wildlings into his army. But the mountain clans seem to be often forgotten by even the northern houses, I don't see why stannis would be so knowledgeable of their exact location and fighting numbers.
