Note: We learned a hell of a lot from this experience! Always make sure you take suitable clothing/equipment and always let someone know where you are going and when you are expected to get back. Things can change drastically out there in the wilds.
That being said, we had a great time stopping at the Moel Prysgau Bothy. A simple shelter situated in a very wild and lonely place, lots of stunning scenery and nature.
This will probably be the last video of the year for me so I wish everyone a great Christmas and see you in the New Year for more great adventures!
If you do plan to visit here, I highly recommend approaching from the South (Near Abergwesyn). Then just follow the road/path :)
Also thanks to the MBA for the upkeep of these great bothies!

Just to clarify a few things, we usually take a lot of equipment with us during our wild camping adventures but in this case we thought we would go lighter due to the OS maps, bothy and that is was only 5 miles. May this video be a great example of very bad decision making and why you should always be well equipped in these areas. I always take an emergency shelter with me along with many ways to make a fire which saved us in the end. However, we still had a great time and got a nice pint at the pub in the end ;) Again if you are planning to visit this area, approach from the south (Near Abergwesyn). There is at least a path!

Your talking about your survival skills and feeling like Bear Grylls.....????? Wearing clothing for a Saturday night out you set off ill prepared for the conditions. You found shelter in a house with a fire, blagged a lift in a car and went to a pub...... And where does the wild camping come into it ? You should re title it " a STUPID walk to a house in Wales" ..... Survival skills ?????

No. I'm sorry. The wild ? A walk over the hills to a house with a fire. If you turned that into something dangerous you don't have a lot to be proud of. At least I saw a map and GPS. You would have to be a lot more serious here in Oz.

Guy's.. A polite roasting from a concerned expedition leader. Mountains are dangerous places and it seems that you have a bit of knowledge that helped you out on this trip thankfully, however, in a matter of minutes that could have gotten a lot worse.. ive known it start snowing thick and fast in the welsh mountains and has blocked off many exits in minutes..! and to my horror, other than the crap jackets i noticed you was wearing sports trainers..!! But you was using a £200 GPS unit !! Guy's.. Please..If you are going to do this shit, spend your money on quality clothing designed for the purpose as it will save your life long after your batteries have ran out on a flashy gizmo ! Good boots and waterproof clothing are essential. Stay safe.
@Richywayne
@Richywayne 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the waterproofs were OK until I fell into water up to my waist :P As for the shoes, they were mountain walking shoes from Go Outdoors that were surprisingly OK with water resistance. I used them on my Cumbria Way walk which served me very well even in the mountains. But boots would certainly have been far more ideal for this terrain! The GPS I find is quite a bit of essential kit to place way points for camp/cars and to see where the nearest villages and roads are in case we need to take an alternative route, it's waterproof and lasts far longer than that of any phone app. Putting a spare set of clothes in a waterproof bag was the best thing I did, especially for the next day. Everything inside the bag was also very dry thanks to the waterproof that goes over the bags. If we did get stuck, I packed an emergency shelter system and have quite a few ways of making a quick fire :) Further to that, I let relatives know exactly the route and where we would be stopping. So if they didn't hear us by a certain time, they would meet us at an emergency point to pick us up or send help. Lots of lessons learned from this adventure, can't wait for more :) Cheers :D

Guys, I know people here have already said that, but you need to come to the mountains prepared. What if you hadn't found the shelter? You would have needed to find or make a shelter and would have needed sufficient layers (either of clothing and waterproofs or an actual sleeping bag / bivvy / emergency shelter). By the look of it, you were not wearing the right clothing for the cold as well as insufficient waterproofs, not sure about the boots, but if they weren't waterproof and sturdy they would have been a bad choice for an overnight trip. You had a map (which is great) and GPS - which is ok, but not ideal since you can run out of battery, especially and often quicker in the cold; a compass and the skill to use it should have been your choice as this can't fail you if your skill level is good, even if the weather turns and you encounter ground fog e.g. Also, unless I've missed it, you didn't seem to have brought any kind of sleeping bag. Well, a bothy will provide some shelter, from wind and rain, but it's not like it has central heating, it's still going to be cold. Another bit of advice would be to check the weather forecast, maybe you did and went anyway which is fair enough if you come prepared, but for anyone who hasn't got the kit and experience, it's probably best to stay in when the forecast isn't promising. I'm glad you got through it ok, but be more careful in the future, get advice and the right kit and knowledge.

Used todo this stuff when i was a teenager and a bit older, it took a while but realised there were some British weather conditions just not worth bothering with, it’s just a slog though wet moorland and driving freezing rain. more to the point. Normal fleece and short breathable jackets don’t work very well, Down even worse. Older fabrics worked better We used to use wool, later fibre pile and Helly underwear, stuff that worked wet through. when it came in Buffalo systems shirts are made just for this sort of shit . gaited boots a must, A long cag keep you dry for longer. but main thing was wear stuff that was warm when wet, even best breathable shells didn’t not seem to work when rain hard and your working hard you end up wearing wet clothes inside.

Good video and an honest recognition of your mistakes. In my experience of walking in that area - footpaths are rarely evident on the ground, other than main routes. If the route is open grassland, you are lucky. Try slogging over a tree plantation that has been felled and a load of trees and brash left on the ground. The lesson is - prepare for the worst and don't be afraid to back off if the weather gets too harsh. I wouldn't rely on one GPS unit either. Always back up with compass and map and know how to use them. An emergency shelter is good, but a tent or a bivvy bag is better. If you had missed the bothy you'd have been screwed. No proper shelter and you would never have got a fire going in the rain.

Quite a number of people commenting on this saying we didn't have sleeping bags, shelter etc. The majority of my kit was brand new. We both had sleeping bags and tents. I was also equipped with an emergency shelter. The gear was waterproof-certified. We were both wearing boots. Also, I'm not usually one to be rude, but some of you are incredibly obnoxious, and probably should have your eyes checked as well.
@dynfideo
@dynfideo 5 жыл бұрын
Can't comment on tents or your boots but I just wanted to mention your jacket. I can see that you or the other guy is wearing a padded jacket from Mountain Warehouse while getting rained on, so I assume that's the waterproof jacket you mentioned. FYI, that's not waterproof but water resistant at best. This kind of stuff is designed for keeping you warm walking your dog or a trip into town on a cold day, and if you're going to put yourself in a situation where you end up being "freezing cold" that is a sign that you really need an actual waterproof outer layer. Falling into a puddle or whatever it is you did aside, I'm not surprised you ended up feeling really cold if that was your protection against the rain. People are commenting so that you don't end up risking your life or the lives of the MRT volunteers who could have to come and get you one day! Maybe instead of being so defensive (you acknowledged in the video that you made bad, dangerous decisions but your comment here makes it sound like you had all under control), try engaging with some of the commenters and you might learn something useful for next time. The sheer number of comments calling you out on the risks you took might suggest to you that we are not all obnoxious, blind people?

Glad you made it safe and sound, if a little damp! Interesting how quickly hypothermia can take effect. Just be aware the red ticks on the OS maps Do Not mean a path as you and I would like, only a public right of way! Clearly the route is not used all that often. And just to help you for next time think about your clothing as an upgrade is needed me thinks😂 Take care out there regards Clive from deepest Dorset.

Check out '2 feet forward'' s video where they followed a similar walk in to the bothy...in deep snow and with a dog! Despite having a mare, they were OK because they were well equipped. I can only echo what others have said. You would not have not suffered anything untoward in proper outdoor gear and decent boots. Not those lightweight fabric boots or trainers that are waterproof for 5 minutes before they suck up water like a sponge. For that boggy upland stuff, you need an old school pair of leather boots in my opinion.

There was evidence there was a route but it's probably not been used in ages. We were stupid to carry on though to be honest. I have plenty of equipment to start a fire quite quickly if it was an emergency. There was plenty of dead fall as well so wood would not have been an issue, but because it was wet, it would have taken longer. I always take an emergency shelter system so if we didn't make it to the bothy at least we could take shelter and stay warm.

The first lesson in any kind of should we say "adventure" in the wild is ......be prepared! Don't ever assume or take for granted, those places in summer can change at the blink of an eye. Before setting off you should always think what if ? Or just in case? You planned for a short hike of 5 miles in a bit of wind and drizzle. What would you have done if the visibility got worse, the Garmin died, one of you got injured, you got lost? No shelter taken, no real waterproofs, unbelievable footwear.....and you're walking through a marsh??? Come on lads lets be serious. The sad thing is if things had turned bad others would have had to endanger themselves in poor weather to get you two out of a situation you shouldn't have put yourselves in. Just watch '2FeetForwards' video of the same trek in unbelievable snow conditions and white outs, freezing temps, but they handled the situation because they were prepared, worse they had a little dog with them. Never ever assume full stop.

We used to call this camping in the Marines lol Many a time all we had was a compass and weren't allowed to use a bothy just a bivvi bag and had to make our own shelters. The times we did have an OS map they weren't really 100% accurate because severe weather could often change some areas, good for landmarks and an idea of location of hills and woods, snow would often come in fast and hard. The woods was our home and best friend. Great effort though guys but try to improve in the kit. ie. proper walking boots and warmer cloths.

Wish I could still do them myself but my health doesn't allow it anymore. on training exercises many many years ago we would do a 30 mile route march to be covered in 8hrs across the Brecon Beacons and the weather there was unforgiving, you really had no time to shelter even if the snow was coming down but without that banter it would have been twice as hard and isn't it funny we still enjoy the same thing today. As you can imagine I'm friends with a lot of scots guards on facebook and you can imagine the banter that goes on there between veteran marines and guardsmen, some civvies reading our posts must think wtf lol

@@jerrybootneck1736 I hated Sennybridge / Brecon as you say the weather was awful, in one day you could have snow , sun, rain, hail, sleet, and snow again. we did the capture force for the SAS now that was kit, but the weather was shit Love the Banter though, Civies don't understand the amount of times I have had you cant say that , we just look at each other burst out laughing and say fuck off , take care NAVY :-) :-)

No lads, your 'wild camp' in unremarkable UK conditions was not 'dangerous'. Your lack of suitable footwear, clothing, preparation and know-how was, however. Bunch of jokers. Please don't try this kind of stunt in genuinely challenging terrain/conditions, or you will become what's known as a Darwin Statistic. Then, we won't be able to laugh at any more of your videos. Credit for not inconveniencing the rescue services on this occasion, and for having the courage to post this footage as an example to other fantasists/enthusiasts. As the German guest asks at the conclusion of the infamous Fawlty Towers episode: "However did they win?"

Whoa big boy. Less of the pistol whippin'. Whilst this may not be a 'dangerous' situation for the more experienced and better equipped guys, it is a very good illustration of the classic scenario where people go out like these lads completely unprepared and actually end up in the sh*t. You don't need to be miles into the wilderness to end up in a survival situation. You can die of hypothermia in your own yard. Credit for these lads for posting their experience which will hopefully better educate others so they don't make similar mistakes.

Huh! That was like an average day on the Scottish hills. if you were struggling doing a 5 mile walk even over tussocks it shows you aren't fit. And like the last comment you weren't wearing proper gear. A good rain jacket is a must in any of the British hills. So get fit and get better gear.

Aye! This was very poor decision making by us as we thought it would be a simple walk to the bothy, no drama. It's good that I always take an emergency shelter along with many ways to make a fire which saved us in the end. We had just done the Cumbria Way which was 85+ miles and wild camped all the way so fitness was not too much of an issue just piss poor decisions on what we took :P
