Rather than Airi's powers being suppressed I also think it's more of the "children are closer to the spirit realm" kinda thing and they're more sensitive to paranormal stuff at that age, because you how they have such a vivid imagination and how they often have imaginary friends? They say it's that ability to see spirits like fairies, ghosts, entities, etc. then they lose that connection when growing up and you have to go out of your way to reconnect yourself to that sensitivity unless you're gifted with that ability, or you have an experience that connects you again (near death, trauma, etc)

Yeah they show this a lot. Take the scene from JJK season 2 (or was it the end of 1) when it showed Mahito and Jogo playing at a playground with the local children? Children are always much more aware and have an acute 6th sense. Hell I remember my mother telling me how out house in Virginia was haunted (well known in the neighborhood too) and that I apparently had a ghost "friend" that I would talk to sometimes. No idea how true any of that is lol but it is a common idea than children can see or sense the paranormal more.

The part that I found interesting about this anime is that the ghosts that appear in it are legends that are told in Japan. Grandma Turbo is an older one, the one that appeared is a more recent one. Grandma Turbo even talks about it, and maybe, and I can't say whether it is or not, the girl there that she called mother was someone alive and died recently in a tragic way and the spirit came after her.
