I think the spirits can see normal people, but people don't see them so they ignore them normally. But if you have spirit powers and can see spirits they notice you. That's how I interpreted the "if she can see them, they can see her."

that's my interpretation too. They can see people, but it's like seeing a tree in a forest. It's basically background to you, and it's indistinguishable from every other tree. But if that person is spiritually awakened, that's like if they had a Quest Marker floating above their head. Suddenly every spirit is paying attention.

Granny being in the maneki-neko(lucky cat doll) has some significance. The cat dolls are good luck omens for wealth in modern day, but they weren't that way originally. They were specifically for luck with safety. In the Edo period of Japan, the 1600s, a ruler was hiding from rain under a tree when a cat beckoned him into a nearby temple. When he followed the cat, lightning struck right where he had been hiding from the rain. Believing the cat saved his life, he treated it as a divine spirit, thus the lucky beckoning cat legend and it's statues were born. So the maneki-neko dolls good fortune was originally said to be safety. With Granny consoling the young girls, protecting Momo on the spaceship, and her powers having helped Okarun, it feels intentional she's a good luck charm for safety. Also ironic given how bad she wants to kill them.

a clarification of what turbo granny say: Spirits and Yokai can see human but the usually ignore them at leas they enter their territory or a place they frequent. what TG mean by "star seeing them" is that if your spiritual power is awaken you will be encounter by more and more supernatural things

btw For Turbo Granny's background inspiration, as a visitor to Japan and studying the folklore, she isn't actually a Yokai but a "Medium" who people called a Shaman on that mountain. Anyone whose soul was messed with in that mountain and eventually turned into a tunnel extended her life because she mourns and channels the dead's wishes and emotions. It's why she is a location bound "spirit" as opposed to "yokai".

Here's a thought: Very young children are pure of heart. Most times, their very first words are either a variation of "Mama" and/or "Papa." Also, the innocence of children and animals could sorta see spirits but lose that ability when innocence is lost.

Disclaimer: I don't speak Japanese and haven't read the manga - but I don't think that Turbo Granny meant that regular humans are literally invisible to spirits (although that would, of course, be possible for some of them in such a whacky show). I think what she meant by humans with spiritual powers being "seen" by spirits is that spirits are especially aware of such humans and potentially drawn to them.

8:30 I think the reason it only works when it goes both ways, is cause once your spiritual powers are awakened. So is your spiritual energy. Spirits, Yokai or stuff like that may be able to see that spiritual energy radiating from you, and not so much just you. That's probably what makes people with awakened spiritual powers stick out from the rest and grab the attention of Spirits.

i will say it seems like the subs missed something kinda important here which is strange since they actually explained it well in the dub. could just be because of localization or summ but an explanation for this because i was confused and had to research it myself: since turbo granny is possessing a maneki-neko or in english a lucky cat doll it seems like her powers have changed(?) to that of a lucky cat. shes now able to bring good fortune to people and coincidence becomes inevitability in their favor. so since granny just so happened to-- or i guess i should say inevitably came to school with Okarun, the crucifix that Aira's friends brought just so happened to be, or inevitably was, a lighter. silky just so happened to, or again inevitably, swallowed her own hair. then Momo or Aira coincidentally, again again actually inevitably, lit the hair on fire.
