What a poor excuse for a mother was Alice Munro! Shameful, unempathic reaction to her own daughter's horrific abuse on her part...

Her dad was no prize either, he should have protected her, not sent her back to that household!

Poor excuse for a mother, what the hell was she thinking, no courage whatsoever in that body.

The bigger shame is her father knowing of the abuse and sending her back to be subjected to more. But her mother’s choosing her predator husband over her own daughter is unforgivable and disgusting.

Chucking the book set I purchased for my teen daughter. My relative worked in an office where sex offenders came in for therapy. They were shocked how many partners stood by the abuser over the children. A woman with resources and financial abilities was just plain wrong. Children overlooked by parents who think of themselves first is sadly not uncommon. I feel the family care for the truth over finances, this has hit to the estate. Hard to say how her career would have gone if this was disclosed earlier?

Unfortunately, many women choose to ignore abuse because of their own stuff.....I wish it were not true, sadly it is

Putting the man who SA her own child (and others) first is downright chilling...and she said absolutely nothing while her daughter suffered in silence. Munro may not have done the SA herself, but her abuse was of the emotional kind. Her work, however beautifully written, is now painted in a different light. Also, it seems to me that her career was far, far more important.

Clearly in this case a female Nobel Laureate enabled a horrible man. She’s a disgrace who used her daughter’s pain to sell books. Horrible.

All too common sadly! Mothers rarely support/believe their daughter’s disclosure of sexual abuse even though step-fathers are predisposed to abuse their step-children. That is not to say that all step-fathers are potential abusers, rather, the fact that a step-father has no biological relationship to the children in their care means that they will often feel emboldened to abuse their step-children (in this case, his step-daughter). I am glad that Andrea Skinner had the courage to publicly disclose the abuse … I hope that she can gain some closure as a result …

Unbelievable that a mother could put her image and marriage before her child's well being. The depravity of the intelligentsia!

Alice Munro was wealthy in her own right. Thus, she did not have financial dependency as an excuse. She could easily have kicked the man out as well as been the moving spirit behind his prosecution. But by the time she knew he was a sexual predator, by the time she knew he endangered her own daughter, she was so much "in love" that maintaining that relationship was more important than the safety and well-being of her own child. Alice Munro "loved too much" romantically and loved to little as a mother. Sadly it is all too common for child abuse to continue because mothers put their own passions above their duties to their children. This happens even in same-sex situations. A woman named Lisa Coleman was executed for abusing to death her lesbian partner's child. The partner, the victim's mom, went to prison for doing nothing to stop the horrors.

For AM I will acknowledge her age with sticking heads in the sand era. My distant relative sent her husband packing back to England after believing her daughter. That was during the war with five children to raise on her own.

She spent all of time hiding herself away in writing these stories rather than protecting her daughter from sexual predators.

@@coopernickerson7470 It's an important detail. You're suggesting the abuse was happening with her knowledge. She stayed with the man after learning of the abuse years later. That's a tough one. But she wasn't aware of the abuse as it was happening.

Defend Alice? You mean the way she defended her daughter? I love her writing, but that now has a hypocritical taint to it. By saying what you've said, you too are saying her daughter is completely at fault (as well as being a liar).
