I think it was more how they approached having their gifts. 1) Beauty- she became very vain in her looks and didn’t bother to do her duty thinking that just being good looking was enough. When lost she realized that people wouldn’t tolerate her anymore and she had nothing else to offer. 2) Eloquence- I feel like at a point we all know someone that we want to just shut up lol. This one basically became annoying because she would always just talk, even of nothing simply to hear herself speak most likely. Or that person who was actually so smart in comparison no one wanted to be around . 3) Pleasing- this one is honestly more the curse but very plain to understand that in trying to please everyone you please no one. It’s like trying to force yourself to fit in or gain attention. I wanna know if she has any control over whom she wants to please or it’s a mandatory thing? Overall the stories are just don’t be too consumed by one thing in your life. I don’t feel it’s dated.

I think the dated part is less that the other traits are shown in a negative light and more that asking for "a quiet spirit" is considered the best choice. Following the formula of too-much-of-a-good-thing, Sylvia would be expected to have issues with repression and not standing up for herself or others, but this isn't brought up at all, seemingly implying that it's best for women to stay in their own lanes instead of trying to get ahead socially.

I'm kind of confused as to how this story is "dated"? Its message seems like one of the more timelss ones I mean there are a lot of "gifted" people who are miserable because they center their entire worth around their "gift" even today. Men and women both.

I don't think it's as dated as you think. Beautiful people are often tolerated more than ugly, so when that gift failed, she has to rely on the rest of herself... which wasn't practiced in other virtues. Seeking to please everyone will invariably lead to insincerity and an inability to live up to it. Knowledge is not a bad thing, but if it is your driving force it is a bottomless pit that can never be filled.

If I had a gift it turned into a curse. Two stokes and nerve damage. I am kind to those who need it. But kindness has its downfall so maybe the strokes were a sign to give some more thought about kindness when they abuse me. Idk it makes sense in a fairy tale lol.
