Thanks, DF! In your favor, you've got a lot of structures that were built centuries ago, bringing their own intrigue to the footage you shoot. Seattle's got nary a one. In fact, with just a handful of exceptions I was around to watch most of the downtown skyscrapers going up.

Woah, John! I can't imagine how much work went into this! It looks like a PBS or Smithsonian show. The only thing I would do is break this up into several videos, maybe by region or time of day? I wonder if you're getting the watch time you deserve because the video is so long. Fully watched!
@johnriper4416 Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Christian! This is a first run at a type of aerial video I haven't tried before. My idea was to compile a long-form video that would make for enjoyable background listening while also having visual interest anytime the viewer wanted to check out whatever might be happening on the screen. I figured only exceptional people, or people exceptionally interested in drone visuals (like you!) would attend to it at length as one would to a feature length movie. The view durations so far are pretty decent, which is probably more than I deserve, or else a lot of people just let it run until the music changes to a track they don't like or their attention goes elsewhere. I'm planning on doing two more of these "long form" videos, and then will switch to some very different styles -- including some with varied-format content like I've been so impressed with in your videos.

John this is one of the best city flights I’ve ever seen. I don’t know why but it gets me nervous seeing flights close to big buildings. Where were you standing?
@johnriper4416 Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Ted! You're right about that kind of flying being rather nerve-wracking. I've found that the biggest risks are from losing signal or losing satellite lock because then the drone can fly into a building without me directing it. So almost all the sequences are long, straight-line flights where I know I can keep line-of-site. Sometimes I'd pick a spot in the middle of the intended path, but more often I'd find a place downtown where I can see the path I want to fly and can get satellite lock before taking off. That's surprisingly difficult to do in much of downtown Seattle, and I'd expect that's true in other major cities. The airspace corridors between skyscrapers is kind of a Death Valley in terms of receiving signal. But when I can find a place to start and the drone has solid signal, I know it will get even better at higher altitude. Then I fly the course and ride the curve of tolerable signal. As RC degrades or the satellite count drops I either go higher (you'll see that at the tail end of a number of the flight segments), or I just stop, turn the drone around, and shoot coming back again.
@EverythingWavy Жыл бұрын
Excellent aerial work John! There is just something intriguing about flying through skyscrapers. 🙌
@johnriper4416 Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Aaiden! My intent was to make a long, serene video, but there's a fair amount of white-knuckled flying involved with getting that kind of footage.

John this is a Master Piece totally a work of Art🙂 Amazing footage flying through the city and the music fits right in.🙂 Do you use the DJI RC Pro Controller???? So good to see you got a break in the weather.🙂
@johnriper4416 Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Robert! Yes, I used the RC Pro. It seems to have better range than DJI's earlier controllers, and anecdotally that's what I sense from other users, too.

@@johnriper4416 Thanks I am thinking about getting the RC Pro controller I have the RC controller but I loose the signal a lot when trees are in the way or when flying in low lying ares in between two mountains.

@@StartLivingNow1963 I only briefly participated in what looked like the two largest Facebook groups that interested me. Of those, the Mavic 3 Facebook Group was the most active and helpful, and even if you're not flying a Mavic 3 I think you'll get good feedback about what they think of the RC Pro. The other group was the Mavic 3 Owners Group, and there just didn't seem to be much activity (or response) there. I very much appreciate its better performance, but whenever solid objects get between the controller and drone it's going to interfere with signal.

What a skyline john great job.. did you run into any signal issues? And don't answer what heights you achieved, lol.👍
@johnriper4416 Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jim! Yes, I had a lot of signal interference, and most of the long shots ended once I risked losing signal. On elevation, one of the most useful benefits of a 107 certification is the FAA rule provides that as long as airspace authorization doesn't otherwise restrict it, it's legal to fly up to 400' above any nearby structure (technically, the drone is legal so long as it's within 400' of a structure in any direction). I might make a short video on that, as it doesn't seem to be widely known.

Thanks, David! I did this one (and another I published this morning) as abnormally long so that anyone who wants to have the music playing can let them run and look at their screen if and as they want to. It's sort of like the Christmas fire log marathon videos with carols, just with drone footage that's hopefully more interesting than a log in a fireplace.
