Hey!! So I’m just about to start a job with the same title, marketing and conference coordinator. I’m a bit nervous. Do you travel a lot? What are some of your responsibilities in terms of marketing?

Same boat as you! Checking in, how has it been going so far? Have you accumulated any advice for someone who was in your shoes four weeks ago?

@@sydneynicole6151 Hi Sydney! Congratulations! 😊 I’m on week 4 now. So far so good. I will not be travelling much myself, so no passport required for my role. In terms of conferences, I will be organizing the territory reps (sales rep) who attend the conferences for us. I’m responsible for booking those reps to attend, sourcing their travel/hotel options and building them a schedule in teams planner breaking down their day (I.e. 9am booth set up @ this location, 2pm lunch at this location, etc.). It’s looking like a lot of logistical planning. I’m also responsible for the creation and development of marketing material for the conferences. This includes development and distribution of the marketing printouts, booth banners, etc. ensuring they are printed and shipped to the places they might need to be depending on conferences. It appears conferences get busier in the fall and spring so a bit of slow period right now.

From someone who is aspiring that right now, what steps can I take to be an event coordinator and if there are any college courses or degrees involved what steps can I take to become more into it? What do they look for, and what’s it really like?

I'd say try to see if your college hires students to work as event staff. I got to do that and basically I helped set up the various events that were going on at my school. I heard that there is an event management degree or something, but in my interviews HR knows that those majors are rare and they are looking for more hands on experience. So I'd say try to get a job in events to see if its what you truly want to do!
