As someone who has failing euesight I'm so impressed with this work. I can still see the players, can't read the names on the shirts, numbers are ok, the ball is hard for me to spot. The thought that I can still enjoy the game thanks to commentators like you is MASSIVE. Thank you to all the audio descriptive commentators out there.

I know this is an FM channel, but for me this was the best video you've done. FM is a crowded market and a lot of the videos tend to overlap or be similar. What we saw in this video however, was unique and super interesting. Im not sure what you can and can't see but for my money, the more of these the better

Love it. I've often thought that modern commentators, aren't actually commentating on the game, just telling you who's in possession off the ball. Your doing a good thing bud, best of luck to you and Lincoln in the coming season.
@impy1980
@impy1980 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, I think the art of commentary is all but dead, it's just waffling now, as you say, x player has the ball, x player passes to x player, then some nonsense conversation with whichever numpty is sat next to them, it's also not helped by box ticking co-commentators who are often employed for reasons other than their knowledge of the particular sport or even skill in putting 2 sentences together. If you're local, I know Radio Lincolnshire gets knocked by some people, and Michael Hortin has his ways, but compared to many Lincoln away commentary I've heard, we're very lucky to have the team we do, Rob Makepeace is very knowledgeable.

This is fascinating. This is exactly how it works with radio commentaries for US sports. Especially hockey, where I struggle to understand how they speak that fast and that descriptively. I would’ve never guessed that radio broadcasts in Europe weren’t like this so I’m very used to hearing what you’re talking about.

Is the audio description something that happens in all clubs of that level? Or are Lincoln an outlier in that? Either way it's so important that sports are for everyone , and they should be able to enjoy it regardless of any disabilities.
@impy1980
@impy1980 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is, that it is not a legal requirement to provide audio descriptive commentary at games, however under disability discrimination act and equality act laws, every attempt to make goods or services accessible to all must been done within means and business limitations - for example that's why you may see at some shops or businesses with steps outside, there's a "ask for assistance sign" a sign and a ramp is enough to comply with obligations and being wheelchair friendly. Some industries and organisations are required by law to provide ADS, although football isn't one, but it is now accepted that it will be provided by many footballing bodies and clubs. Now, audio description services range from organisation to organisation to club to club, Alan March Sport Ltd provides services to the likes of UEFA and the Premier League, to Wrexham and Crawley Town, while at other clubs, ADS could be operated by the club's disabled supporters club, an organisation under the club's umbrella or some other voluntary group, there's no real centralised agreed way of doing it, or rule, although everyone does get the same kinda training based on Audio Description Standards,, this could be provided by Audio Description Association (ADA) or other agencies such as Audio Description Solutions, or even trained freelancers. This isn't limited to football, theatres and museums and such like will have obligations to provide ADS. But to answer your question, no Lincoln is not an outlier, most if not all professional clubs in UK will have ADS available, it's just a matter of who provides it.

I love this!! I feel like radio commentary for sports in the USA must be different, because I was watching a video of different calls of the Mets' no-hitter last season and the radio commentator was very specific in describing the action on the field while also putting the right amount of emotion into it.

Your style of commentary reminds me of baseball radio commentary in the US. The good announcers are so descriptive of the environment, teams, and obviously the plays that it can really help you see what’s happening, even if driving down the road.

See, this this is where radio shines, with the right people. The fantastic John Hindhhaugh, my go to for making anything amazing, puts it like this: You don't have pictures to show what's going on. You have to paint the picture. You aren't bound by what the cameras are showing at all and you can talk about things. @TomFM I'm half agreeing with your point on that's how radio should be...but. The BBC have nailed it with some sports, like F1 and tennis, and certain football matches. Rugby, too or that matter. Now if every match was like your second example, then you'd get several blind people telling you to STFU so they can enjoy the match, you'd get some wanting more description and so on. It's a balancing act of finding out how much info to convey with what's going on with that. I've found some US sports absolutely nail the whole descriptive aspect of it. MRN, they cover US motosports and typically have someone up in each bit of the trac, and give way more detail than the TV crews do and have o to throw it around the track as the cars get to each bit. It's like if you're working with three people, you're at the half way line, you got someone covering each penalty area and you switch back and forth depending on where the ball is. So question, what about if sight lines or poor stadium design means you can't get a good view of what's going on, for instance a goalmouth scramble?
