ABOUT ME
🙋‍♀️ I’m Maria, an Engineering Manager at a big tech company and I’ve been coding since I was 13 years old. I love working in tech because building new things and being creative is something that makes me really happy. While on this journey, I realized how lots of questions I receive in 1:1s get repeated a lot so I decided to upload short and simple Q&A videos on TikTok which grew to a small amount of followers. For some questions, I wanted to dive deeper with longer answers which is how this channel started. Thanks for being here - my goal is to help some people out and make their lives at tech jobs more effective.

I often watch stuff like A day in the life of a SE to get a grasp on the work environment since I'd love to change my job, and your video is by far the healthiest and most structured/organized one :) Most of all, you are a tech manager, which means you look like "Superwoman" to me since I'm a beginner teaching myself how to program such as frontend knowledge and Python haha.. Anyway, thank you for bringing me a bit of motivation to push my learning journey~! -From Korea :)

I am currently 24 years old, going for 25, and started my Internship at a Big Tech Company here in Germany. I love the work there and would love to make a step to the USA to have a grasp of an american work ethic. Your videos are super inspiring. Loving the aesthetic, the editing and the small details you put into this. It is currently 8:48 on a sunday here in Germany and there is nothing better on a sunday morning than a motivational video like this. Well, that was enough motivation to start finishing my seminar paper for Uni.. 🤒

Omg hi to Germany! Being from Germany myself, I know his feeling well. Once you work for a big tech company full time for 1 year, you can apply to transfer to a US role with the L1 visa. Super easy and would recommend it even if it’s just one year. I initially wanted to stay here for 2 years and now it’s been 7 💀

@00Divine00 Жыл бұрын
@@techmentormaria Oh sounds super nice. If I remain that happy, I will for sure try to stay at the tech company for some time and join their Graduate program, if they are also happy with me. Would then try to move to the US, at least for a year as you mentioned it to see how it is there. I can't really have an opinion on the US and how it is there, since I have not been there, but would love to do it to finally have a opinion on this topic. Wish you the best for your channel :)

@@00Divine00 Hey dude what was your bachelor's? What skills do you need for joining a big tech company? I am 20 and need some advice for the software engineering field.
@00Divine00
@00Divine00 Жыл бұрын
@@B0TZ Hi NEo, I am currently still in the last phase of my bachelors. It really depends what internship you want in tech. I am currently responsible for the Cloud of the company. I am learning about the services, implementation possibilities and in generall everything, you need to know to start having some first contact with customers and help your team. For an internship, you will probably have a coding interview, where you would solve a problem or get invited to an assesment center, where you would do tasks in person. As dumb as it sounds, at least for an internship, where you probably don't have years of on the job full-time experience, they really care about you as a person. Skills are important, of course, but when you have a warm personality and you are being yourself (and trust me those recruiters will get it, if you are not yourself), you have high chances since they are trying really hard to find people, who will fit to the team and to the typical cultural aspects in tech - which is being open minded, open for culture and all kind of this stuff. As an intern/working student, you will learn a lot on the job when you get into the company. They have a lot of well structured learning material. The other thing is, i am unsure where you live, but here in Germany it is often harder to get an software engineering internship at big tech, since not many offer it here. They mostly keep those for the US because of their development centers laying around here. For a software engineering internship, if you are in Germany, i think you would have to go abroad. I am unsure on this info, but I heard that my company and many others have development centers in Dublin, for example. Wish you good luck tho. I wish I would be that motivated and informed at 20. You have a great path in front of you.

So I've had both and it really depends on what you're working on. If you're working on web things + open source, I always felt like Mac was better because lots of the frameworks out there are optimized for Mac. However, if you need a really performant laptop/desktop for example for VR or video development, I find a Windows machine better.

nice video 💥💥Discipline level : Elden Ring(9999) ...What do you think about self-taught developer? ( chance to get hired and etc)
@techmentormaria
@techmentormaria Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Welcome to the channel 🙌 I'm a self taught developer myself actually but I did end up going to college to study Computer Science mainly for the reason because I wanted to live and work abroad (I'm from Germany) and I knew I needed a college degree to get most visas. I know plenty of self taught devs that are very successful in their careers and don't see big differences between self taught and college taught devs starting mid level positions. In tech, initiative is what matters the most so you need to be able to be disciplined about teaching yourself how to code, learn from others through things like bootcamps or open source work and make sure you never stop learning. Happy to film a video on that if more people are interested!

The time you spent on your morning routine before actually starting work looks insane. I respect your motivation, however it feels a bit off, that your morning hours are most productive for your, while spending half of your morning on the routine. Maybe you could put timestamps, so that we could get more of an idea, what's your actual schedule is 🤔

I learned to invest as much in mindfulness, health and happiness as I do in my work which is why I do the things I do. I’m more happy and effective at my job if my body and mind feel balanced. I wake up between 6-7 and usually start working at 10 so 3 hours is plenty for my morning routine without stress :)
