It's just a weird type of job. Everyone seems to be isolated doing their own thing. There's no boss, meetings or structure of any kind. There's not even a company logo to be found anywhere. I mean, how do you even get paid? Like do you have to produce an actual program and people rate it's worth and you get a commission on it? Does a boss come up to you and say, I need you to write a tax program for people to do their income taxes on. And then just leaves you to it? Takes as long as it takes you to get it done. I just don't understand jobs like these at all. I don't see where the money comes from or the accountability to produce something of quality.

Maybe those are the hours in California, but this not my experience as New York software engineering who works with Wall Street clients. My first 2 years when I was unmarried and was doing my best to learn both the business and the code base, I would get up at 5:45 AM, get to work about 7:15 AM, work to 9 PM, get home at 10:30 PM, eat a quick dinner before going to sleep and start all over again. Plus, I would often work on Saturday and would sometimes get called by work in the middle of the night, because our systems ran overnight to get clients ready for the next trading systems, and it anything went wrong we needed to fix it ASAP. I cut my hours a bit when when future wife finished college and moved back to NYC, and now with two teen kids and in my 29th year working at my company, I get up at 6:15 AM to get to the office at 7:45 AM, and leave work at 5:20 PM to get home at 6:45 PM ( though during COVID-19 it was 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM at home ). Of course, like most places where software developers work, there are no set hours, but I can get more done if I work more hours, and I've been rewarded well for all the extra work I've done.

For me, a day as a software engineer would be much spent on writing code, debugging code, checking out tech sites for related info to problems that I am solving, responding to client e-mails, troubleshooting tech issues, writing a program in a language I rarely use to get an integration going. Once in a while after I hit a snag and nothing is forthcoming, I create a pseudo account on Stackoverflow and enlist for help from the experts but I would be lucky if I do not get more than 2 downvotes to my Question whenever I login back to see if someone extended a helping hand. My happy moments are on those days when I get to fix a bug or figure out how to do something that I have been struggling with in the past and on those days when a client with an interesting project signs up. When I am not at my desk working like on weekends or like when taking a walk, my mind will still be conscious about a problem that I am still struggling with or hopefully wishing that backup script for doing database dumps is working fine. Maybe I never picked good coding practices along the way to make my life much more easier and smooth but for me, the gratification is usually delayed sometimes even measured by the reduced number of client calls and e-mails about support and bugs reported incidences. Maybe I should post a KZbin video about my life as a DevOps Engineer because my roles overlap with other roles outside the domain of Software Engineering.

Yep, spot on, at least in my case, I work in the heavy industries, automotive fields and my life as a freelancer sw.e. system integrator is mostly, look for new projects, fight with the customers because most of the times they don't know what they want/don't understand what it's possible/not possible, want it cheeper, want it ready for the past month, want to keep the old code base, but changing everything. Fight with the lack of docs of many 3rd parties systems. Fight with my own lack of docs. Fight with wife because I spend more time/weekends in factories around the world than at home. Fight because people tend to forget to pay on time. Becoming bald. Having developed gastritis in my early 30s. Sometimes, much more in the past, spending my nights thinking to some new bugs/problems/discrepancies emerged during the day. It's a stressful life. But I guess it depends on the project one is tackling. Still video like this one make me wonder, where is this shangri-la? I'm keeping missing it :| Friend of mine worked in the bank managent field and he run away after few years, good money, but waaaay too much stress. So why I'm keeping going on? Masochism.

Studies show that software engineers only get 2-4 hours of quality work in per day. Because it's mentally demanding work, that's how long we can keep our concentration at a high level before our brains get too tired or the work starts to bore us. This fluctuates highly. If I'm at work and the work is BORING, I'll only work a couple hours. It's all I can take. But for interesting projects, I'll keep concentrated for about 6 hours out of the day.

I know people who are Auditors and Legal advisors at one of the Big 4 financial companies and they work 10-12 hours to get better position and better payment. Their career is solely built on doing boring work to get your life on track. And they do not whine on the internet about it, because they make money while you search the web. Engineers are just lucky to have a carefree worklife because companies have less supply than demand on the market. But dont worry I can tell you, after 2 more generation on the workforce and all yo lil shits will compete with each other like any normal worker does and then you will have no 10-24 am going to work or you will have no job the next day. The people who live comfortable are falling the easiest when there is a change in the market. And dont expect the new generations to be anything else but engineers since its fuking hyped up as shit.

Thank baby Jesus I got out of this. Sometimes I have to watch these videos to remind myself how much I hated working as a code monkey. Humans are simply not meant to be sitting in an office for 10 hours a day, then come home and sit in front of the TV for a couple of more hours. I graduated in 2008, stuck around in Silicon Valley for a year as a software engineer at a big name company. Moved to LA and did my masters at USC while working as a software engineer in finance, realized I hated my life despite making money. Moved to Switzerland and kept working in finance for another 3 years, finally decided that I would rather make far less money and live a life I actually enjoy so I quit everything and started working as a tour guide around the Alps. I don't make anywhere near as much money but I wake up on Monday morning feeling eager to get to work. Anyway, I digress, do you commute for more than 2 hours to get to work?! I had some colleagues in the valley who did and I always thought to myself, why don't you just quit and find another job in a state with a more reasonable cost of living!?!
@Bluesky351026 жыл бұрын
Damn man, you're scaring me... I'm studying computer science in a French engineering school... And to be honest it doesn't look to bad for now... From computer science to tour guide, that's quite a change... How did you get recruited as a tour??
@johnvictorengland77036 жыл бұрын
@@Bluesky35102 You might like it. It just wasn't for me. I've always been an out-doorsy type. I grew up surfing up and down the coast of California. I've always liked hunting, hiking and camping. The office environment is just not for me. Add on top of that all of the ultra-liberal politics that tech companies tend to have, I got sick of it and I wanted out. I got the job through some guys that I know who I go shooting and hunting with regularly. I'm lucky in that I used to work for UBS and they trained me very well. I can make all the extra money that I need from home by spending one or two days a week making investments. As far as being a code monkey goes - hell no. Never again.

Zhou SY wow in what country is that?.. my workplace is similar to the one seen in this video. I am a newcomer and everybody else has been employed for one year or more. And as i dont really enjoy small talk (also i suck at it) i dont spend much time socializing and interacting with everybody else though i always try to greet first every coworker that bump into ( because its like this in Asia). Most of my coworkers appear to be extroverted (i only talk to my coworkers about work related stuff). Now i could sense that some of coworkers dislike my introversion (or maybe my social anxiety). Lately, i always feel tired mentally and physically whenever i get home. It has been quite a stressful situation to me, i wish that people dont care that much about my introversion but my work as i am a gifted professional. Would love to hear how you deal with your situation?
@zhoukiyo6 жыл бұрын
Devia Tor I’m from South East Asia but I think it has more to do with the company’s policy than the country though. As I’m an intern myself, I can’t tell if other IT companies have the same policy as this one too. As for dealing with the situation, I stop forcing myself to appear extroverted. During lunch, I just do my usual thing (being super quiet and playing with my phone) and eavedrop on my colleagues' conversations. If I'm going to add something to the conversation, I'd make sure to say something insightful and maybe with a little humor if it's a lighthearted subject. You can see an extrovert as a minigun and an introvert as a sniper rifle haha If it’s not contributing to the conversation, I’d sometimes pass some treats around and some of them may comment on the sudden generosity (to which I can give a short friendly reply). I’m not talkative and emotionally expressive but I try to show people that I’m overall a nice person underneath that exterior. I also think that witticism is a pretty good trait an introvert should possess if they want to be a bit more socially successful without compromising their true self. Being witty requires you to say something amusing yet clever with very little words. When people react to your humor positively, you feel encouraged to come out of your shell too. I wouldn’t consider myself as an expert in dealing with social situations though. From time to time, I still feel ‘abnormal’ when compared to people.

The real life of a computer programmer is actually very different. It depends a lot on the intelligence of the direction and the environment in which you work. It is essential to find good colleagues to help each other. My work environment was bad, a real nightmare, you were left ten minutes of relaxation, for the rest you had to always be at the computer, the heads of real dictators. Umm fun video but there is a lot of hard work that is spent coding and researching that is not shown.

I like how she strolls into work at 10:24am. And most of the dev desks are empty. this startup is too lax.

Looking at that code bit, I'm assuming she does UI programming with C++. Not much research other than the usual (ie StackOverflow, w3schools, etc) *- edit:* Objective-C, not C++.

Yeah coding is hard. The first parts of learning is easy, like HTML,CSS,and Java (well the beginning of Java at least ).But Python,C++,etc.... That takes work and a lot of practice.
@SportProgramming6 жыл бұрын
What do you mean beginning of Java??? Javascript??? or Java, because it doesn't sound like you talking about Java.

I've been in this racket for almost twenty years. Very boring. I regret being in it, wish I could get out but as you get older, it becomes more difficult to make a big change. Besides, the technology today is so fast changing, that it becomes a chore to keep up with the "latest and greatest". As you become older and more experienced, you realize that much of the IT world is gimmick and marketing.

I am a beginner.. every day new changes.. new things to learn. So far I'm love this life. I don't know what will think later. But I do love new technologies...

Motivation for what? That is not a job, that is a kindergarten. Or maybe not even that, in kindergarten you stay there for much longer a day.

Is this now becoming the trend to show a minimalist millennial lifestyle where seemingly cultured and individual folk post videos of how they are pretty much exactly the same as every other coder. I can't help but notice this stereotype. They like cats. They portray complete balance with exercise, actually eating a breakfast and being content. They embrace being geeky but add this half sophisticated ambiance where it leaves you feeling like they are leading a life which the vast majority of people aspire to these days. When in actual fact the real world ain't so pretty, prim and proper. Quite frankly I can't wait to get into this field and shake it the fuck up.
