This seems the most accurate description I've seen, without doing a deeper dive. I started my role as a System Analyst maintaining automation scripts to making backup servers, to adding webpage features and doing db maintenance. I know other System Analysts with completely different jobs, the title is pretty broad.

This is my current Enterprise role, working with Microsoft/HP vendor. Is a really fun role, i get to received affected devices and analyst the problem and find solutions that can be implemented across all devices. In my opinion is a role that you need to be okay by alone while researching, because thats most of the time.

I’ve been a system analyst for over 10 years, and I’ve always struggled to describe what it is that I do. My answer now is “I get asked to go make IT stuff without being told how, and it’s up to me to figure it out.” This video does a much better job explaining the role than I do. It’s rarely boring, sometimes extremely exciting (for better or worse), and always interesting. If you’re someone who is technical, but also have people skills, this is a really good niche to find a career in.

Hey! bit of a reach to ask for advice here but i graduated this june with a bachelor's in Information Systems and i feel lost-- it seems to me like every IS job requires skills in different softwares so every individual job opening has different expectations. I guess im saying im lost. Where should I start? My curriculum covered tableau, sql, excel, arcgis, and more, but they didnt go far enough in depth for me to now be an expert in any of them. im afraid ill never find a job.

This is a strange field. A lot of systems analyst job postings I've looked for has duties that are pretty much just progamming jobs and has none of the design, problem solving, or data gathering duties you mentioned. Employers are confused when hiring for this role. Not sure why they don't just hire for programmers and developers. I studied Computer Information Systems and studied systems analysis and design but had very minimal programming so I could never get hired as a systems analyst if the job requires in depth knowledge of programming.

You can teach yourself programming.
@yiaxiong7864 Жыл бұрын
@@emilyau8023 That's not the point. It's frustrating that schools don't recognize the change in the roles and duties of this field and don't update the expectations. If they updated the requirements and provided the proper education and tools, graduates in this field would be more successful. In addition, if people knew they were weak in programmming and disliked it, they wouldn't waste their time with this field if they knew in advance it would require it.

So weird. So I should be finishing up my MBA in data analytics and project/product management. I tried applying for BA role at my organization but was denied due to no experience I'm currently in sales but have no experience. Through my development plan and networking one of directors reached out to me about business systems analyst role although closed she was looking for an additional candidate. I don't want to be to technical and have very minimal programming skills. Only R for the most part but she insisted it won't be technical. Looks like a lot of companies have their own description of what this role is. I definitely agree with you

I think we both must've studied together lol. I finished back in 2020, took the classes, and it has been HARD to find a job. I just took this MIS degree as an IT degree. I got a job as an IT analyst last year, but at this point out of desperation in inclined to work in help desk and am studying a certification for it. But I'm like wtf though, like my coworker was like David, what did you actually study? I told him ERP systems and implementation, design, ETC. Like mostly business courses. I know people who went to do their masters in data analysis, but you see im 28 now and im still trying to make sense out of this degree. Like i googled to death how to get a systems analyst role, you need like 5 years of experience. But now! I had an aha moment, like well what should I study to compensate for this experience and land a role. Systems, business analyst (consultant) all these roles are vague as hell! Like I'm so confused. I went to career advising and they're just as fucking puzzled and can't help me get a job. LMFAO.

@peterincork312111 ай бұрын
Just to add to what you accurately said, it depends on the size of organisation you are in. Generally the bigger the organisation, the more handsoffish you will be, from a technical point of view. If you came from a programming background, you will probably lean more backwards to your developing days, as opposed to someone who comes from "the business" where they may have started on the shop floor/warehouse.planning or maybe finance as an accountant. Being able to interact with users is the key though, and that provides variety rather than being handed a spec as a programmer.

@ITCareerGuide3 жыл бұрын
Net+ is not a bad step in direction, but it depends really on your situation. Other certifications like CCNA may be better for where you are in your career. You could also try to switch internally where you work. Having that internal domain (company) knowledge carries a good amount of value and they may be willing to train you on the job if you have some knowledge built up.

It depends. It is different during a project compared to a business as usual situation. You as the analyst want to provide value. The more value you provide, the more involvement you will see. Your opinion and findings matter. But in most situations you are being asked to do certain things and then work away on these requests.

@ITCareerGuide3 жыл бұрын
I would think so. You need to position yourself appropriately. Look for job ads where system analysts are wanted. Then compare your skill set and potentially fill any gaps. If you are applying internally, talk to the hiring manager. If there is no job internally open at the moment, still talk to the hiring manager and let her know that you are looking to slightly adjust your career and share your goals. Consider taking the Google / Coursera Data Analytics certification course to improve your skill set. Here is my referral link for you: bit.ly/3xseb4K (PS: I would earn a small commission if you decide to sign up through my link. There is no extra cost for you and it helps to support my channel.
