Yes, it's common in many countries to speak about university and call it school. A place of education = school

I am Turkish and it's really common in Türkiye to say okul (school) when we are talking about our university. We say we are going to the school instead "university". I don't know but I feel to say university sounds cringe cuz my family already know that I am going to university, I don't need to emphasize it every single time.
