My two cents. EMT is an amazing introduction to emergency medicine, and is invaluable experience. However, it should not/rarely is the end of your career in medicine. Personally, I went from EMT/wildland fire, to Combat Medic in the Army, then back to EMT (while in school, part time), and am now an RN in the ICU. Don't let the pay discourage you, but just know it is a stepping stone in a longer career pipeline, if you enjoy the job.

Firstly i'm amazed that a university student works in EMS, and secondly horrified at some comments regarding pay rates. Here in Australia $45/hr ($33US) is common and it's not impossible to earn $130k/year. Why are US wages so low? You deserve a lot more. Stay safe out there.

Canada's paramedic salaries aren't as great as in Australia but they are pretty good. Never heard of a Paremedic making $130,000 which is nuts. I live in Ontario and there are cities that pay $90,000+ a year. Converted hourly is close to AUS' so that's about $30 + USD. American EMT's are so underpaid, I feel bad for them, they deserve a lot more. It isn't easy seeing the worst of humanity on a daily basis.
@coover65
@coover65 3 жыл бұрын
@@jakethunderbird8735 A$130k works out to US$94k or C$120k. That's for a registered paramedic with a few years under their belt. Here getting a job as a paramedic involves three years of full time university, plus one as an intern. A lot of the newer staff have university fees to pay off which isn't cheap ($30k-don't quote me there). EMT level is quite rare, and mainly limited to remote areas where there is a low workload and often staffed by volunteer "community responders". In the towns and cities though ambulances are crewed by a pair of paramedics. It's an extremely competitive field here and a lot study for a double degree (Bachelor of Paramedicine and Bachelor of Nursing). Even back when I started some 23 years ago it was competitive. In my intake they took on 24 out of some 2,500 applicants.

@@nickdalton886 I agree but at the same time Tom Brady is getting paid to throw a ball 🤷‍♂️entertains; yes but not necessary at all and certainly not deserving millions when EMTs and other emergency responders get paid pennies in comparison. I'm actually in the process right now and its not too bad. It's a 3 month program that is quite accelerated so I reccomend making it your only class! but after you pass the program you are able to register for a state registry test and from there you can go apply to numerous companies to become an emt. Once you have all your certs and get hired you get a 2week orientation training to refresh your skills and get practice for driving the ambulance and test on that as well!

I'm shocked that they make you chart at the station, I can't imagine doing that. By the time we get back it could easily be 10-14 hours later and you're supposed to remember it all? All our chariting must be done before we clear the call as we're not likely to get another chance. Official policy is you have 20 minutes after patient handover to be back in service including cleaning/restocking/charting. As we're a rural service, on all but the busiest calls I can usually have my charting 80-90% complete before we get to the hospital, and whoever isn't charting can usually get the truck back in service by the time the other partner completes the charting. I'll also say, that truck looks ancient! maybe we just have different standards for trucks up here, but I feel we have a much nicer setup, kudos to you being able to work in that rig!
@mck3131
@mck3131 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed! the documentation is obviously very important but you'd think there would be an app out there by now that an EMT can log into and place all of the information into a sever on the road for the company. My first MCI we had 23 patients, and my clip board was spewing with notes and paperwork. The whole time I was thinking... " there has got to be a better way to do this"
@Green__one
@Green__one 4 жыл бұрын
@@mck3131 In our area we use a piece of software called Siren4 which is an electronic charting tool. It's on a touch screen laptop and it connects by cellular to a server. At the hospital we use one of the printers there to give a paper copy to the staff there, and the electronic copy is kept on the server for any future needs (billing, audits, etc). The hospitals are in the process of changing their computer systems though, so in theory the day is coming where we won't have to print it for them either, and they'll just access it electronically. There are other advantages too. If I enter the patient's name/DOB/health care number, I can pull up some information from past ambulance trips such as their allergies, medications, past medical history, and billing information. It's not the most user friendly system sometimes, but it beats doing it at the station for sure! (And although I definitely don't speak for all my co-workers, I think it beats paper too)

We just spend far too much time typing. We all wish they had just gotten us regular laptops instead of these convertible things the detachable keyboard is the biggest problem spot on any of them, all for feature that not a single person wants or uses.

This guy I work with, who was working in EMS for about 13 years, told me that the Basic EMTs are the grunts of EMS. Basically, most of them work for a private ambulance company, transporting patients from their homes to the hospital, nursing homes to the hospital, etc; Then, even if they are hired in with 911 providers, the basics are the ones driving the ambulance and then cleaning out the back afterwards. How true is this for a Basic level EMT? This is all if you are not a Firefighter.
@neilsaeroadventures1116
@neilsaeroadventures1116 Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. If you are with a good service like I am, basics are respected and treated as healthcare professionals because that’s exactly what they are. If it’s a call that a basic can ride, the paramedic will drive to the hospital and clean up the truck afterwards. Good ems people see past certification levels until patient care depends on it.
