It's fascinating to go field sketching with you Julia. The wild orchids are beautiful and so many in one spot! Very helpful tips for protecting the environment while enjoying nature. It's quite hot here in Maryland during the summer, too so I'm always looking for shady spots also. Hearing the birds in the background while you sketched added to the feeling of being there with you. I'm looking forward to more of your outdoor videos.

Thanks Jill! Yes, shady spots are much needed when drawing in these sunny grasslands in the summer. I found that my small umbrella doesn't really help this summer, it's just too hot.

I really enjoyed your video Julia, thank you for going to the trouble of making it. Sketching in the open is tricky at the best of times, but with the heat and trying to film yourself, it cannot be easy. The orchids are exquisite and so rare to see in the uk where I am. We do see the more common varieties but not the bee orchid and some of the others. I’m in Scotland on holiday and the ravens are a very common sight here. That duck like noise is everywhere! Your drawing is very neat and clear considering that you are sitting on the grass! I look forward to more of your videos. Thank you!

Thank you Pauline, you're right, it can be a bit tricky to do all this and then film it, too. I have no idea why I keep doing this. ;-) I think the countries of Southern Europe have the most amazing variety of orchid species, but i'm content with what I can find in front of my doorstep.

What a fantastic vlog. Thank you Julia. The orchids there are beautiful and it is very instructional to see how you draw and paint in the field. I loved all the nature sounds as well as the crunch of your shoes on the dead leaves and sometimes there was the scruffing of your hand on the paper. As someone else says here in the comments, we feel like we are there. Thank you from Australia.

Thank you Sandra! I too much prefer those nature sounds to the road noise I often have to cut out, it seems it's not that easy to find a quiet spot in our densely populated country. Cars and tractors and planes everywhere.

What a beautiful video, thank you very much for taking us with you. Here in the tropical area where I live I haven't seen orchids growing on the ground in the wild. They usually attach themselves to tree trunks, so I found your orchids quite interesting.

Oh, those beautiful tropical orchids, I only know them from greenhouses and ironically from the supermarket - hybrid tropical breeds for the windowsill are really popular over here. They are the spectacular big siblings to the European wild orchids.

What a wonderful vlog, Julia. It's surprising to see so many orchids in the wild. Supposedly we have some in Quebec but I've yet to see any. It's wonderful to see you draw/paint in the field. Thanks.

Thank you Larry! I only learnt about my local orchid places through books and people who are engaged in nature conservation. Maybe something like this exists in your area too. :-)

An incredible place! Orchids are rare where I am in Canada, so any day I see an orchid, I remember it for life. Can't imagine seeing such variety in one day ♥ Thank you for sharing.

Very enjoyable video Julia thanks greatly appreciate you sharing your talent to inspire everyone and explain how to create peaceful and detail of the image, we're going to Canada later this year and would like to take sketching and painting stuff. I've thought of just taking watercolour pencils and water brush also my A5 watercolour sketch books, be interested in your opinion on this please. thanks greatly stay safe and healthy

Thank you Philip! Watercolour pencils plus a water brush sound like a nice portable equipment, when I'm traveling I also take only a very minimal toolkit. I'm not sure if you usually make annotations or do lots of line work, maybe a pen would be useful too? Hope you enjoy your trip!
