Hey Devan, After over forty years of beekeeping - producing honey, nucs, queens and inspecting bees, I am teaching a beekeeping for beginners course and have recommended that my students check out your KZbin channel. You understand bees and explain beekeeping very well. Thank you for the great videos!

You make it look very simple but you know so much. This business looks like hard work with so much to learn

I am new to bee keeping and I have watched many videos; but this one was the most helpful in explaining what to do and showing actual tasks/work for the box; like moving brood box and scraping bottom, cleaning off frames, etc. In addition to looking a healthy and risk boxes. I was hesitant when I check last week to disturb too much. I am in Texas so weather is great right now. I lost one hive just before winter to worm moths and beetles; and a new purchased hive within four months. I want to make sure I am doing the right things moving forward. Your video gave me a little more confidence to do just that. Thank you. Shannon

I'm surprised no one asked already but did the queen survive and how did the hive do. I think i may have just killed a new queen by adding two frames of bees and brood to a hive I split but did not get enough bees the first time . Live and learn I guess. thanks for the videos.

The time you take and share is appreciated. Prefacing why and your intentions of going into the hives are helpful and then the level of dialogue is great!

Excellent work Devan, I've searched and searched for good videos and knowledgeable, usable information on beekeeping and you are the best. Obviously I'm totally new at this but your practical easy to understand straight forward approach is what I like.

Awesome! I appreciate that a lot. Too many people overthink and overcomplicate beekeeping instead of just looking and understanding. Keep it simple.

Devan Rawn I just came across your KZbin channel. Great job of explaining and showing things. Not sure what it is but I find your videos very helpful. Can you tell me where about in the US you live or your hives are that you work in the video? I’ve found it helpful for me to know this info as I listen to beekeepers so that I can put activity to a climate and time of year. Thanks

Devan thank you. I’m a new bee keeper 2 years in the Pacific NW so typically cooler climate until May-June. I love your videos and would like to know more about single brood raising. Can you tell us more about single brood , timing to split, ratio of feeding tine in/out of hives, treatment plans with single brood etc I guess I’m looking for single brood bee raising 101. Thanks and keep them coming. Dane

Thanks for the great video Devan. How long did it take you to become comfortable enough to go without a suit or jacket? I was a beekeeper for about 11 year when I was young, and now, 28 years later, I have my hive again. The are sweet bees but am still can't go without protection. Did you start off that way as well?

How often do you replace your queens? Do you replace them yourself or let the hive grow their own. I really enjoy your channel and gained a lot of useful knowledge from watching your channel.

@bradgoliphant3 жыл бұрын
Oh, I did have one more question. I just started a new hive 21 days ago and they are going strong. Last time I inspected the hive which was 4 days ago, the bees where building queen cups in the middle of the frame--where they supercede. I did open them up and they were empty--yet is this something I need to be concerned with? Does it sound like they are trying to replace her ALREADY??? Grateful. brad

Hi Devan, great videos... I’m a bee keeper in North Central Minnesota and I’m switching to a single brood chamber system after watching your videos, it just makes sense the way you are doing things so Thank you! I was wondering what happened to that hive “in a day of spring Beekeeking” episode. You gave the weak hive a frame of capped brood from another hive. How did they turn out?

Hi Devan, great videos. I am second year beekeeper but did not do well my first year. I lost 3 hives and had a moth issue. I live in Georgia outside of Atlanta. I have a few questions: I purchased four nucs for pick up on April 7. I plan to use only one brood super. What should I feed be bees other than a 1 to 1 sugar mixture? How long should if feed the bees - up to honey flow or longer? Any suggestions with moth control? Lastly, there are two different opinions on queen excluders - your thoughts? Thank you - I will continue to follow your videos. great work

I have watched all of your videos. I live in Wisconsin. Your winters are slightly worse than ours, but similar. Do you use solid bottom boards all year? I am trying to make sure I do things right this year.

Hi Devan, just discovered your videos last night. As soon as you started speaking I knew you must be local, or at least Canadian. I am in Toronto and am in my third year as a beekeeper, this time on the roof of my house in downtown. It's very refreshing and exciting to hear how local beekeepers manage their hives considering the similar weather conditions. My bees died in the winter of 2017-18 despite my best efforts at winterizing them properly with tons of honey and well wrapped up. Last fall I may have inadvertently drowned them with sugar syrup; I am determined to do better this year. Will pick up 2 packages on Wed. and install them the same day, weather permitting. I have a question: that very weak hive with the dead and mouldy bees; is there any concern about keeping frames with mold on them in a hive? In the natural environment there is always going to be the potential for mold: how does this affect the comb as a matrix for brood and pollen and honey stores? Many thanks for the videos, will watch them all.

2nd year beekeeper here - question... why not just add the frame of brood but shake the bees off before adding the frame? Wouldn't that accomplish re-populating the hive without introducing bees that might kill the queen? Just curious. Thanks!
@arogue4695 жыл бұрын
Since Devan hasn't responded, I'll make an attempt. Insufficient population. He had already voiced his concern about how few bees were left after the winter die-off. That brood needs to be covered and kept warm until it emerges - that may take more bees than he would have available, so he brought along the ones that were already on the brood doing the job. Note that he said the reason he was installing the feeder was that they may not have enough workers available to go out and forage effectively. They needed that immediate population boost if they were going to be able to benefit from any future growth. That's my theory, at least!

Are you using 9 frames in the brood box? I couldn't quite tell

Thank you! Yes, I'm in Canada. I live in southern Ontario. The bee belt is made here in Ontario by a friend of mine who is the face of the KZbin Channel "UoG Honey Bee Research Centre". If you're looking to buy one you can probably get one shipped internationally through this supplier - dancingbeeequipment.com/products/bee-belt-for-hive-tool-and-queen-cage
@peterfletcher89516 жыл бұрын
What do you do with the stuff you're scraping off the inside of the hives? Also, do you do anything with what you're scraping off of the frames? Do you need to take it out of the area? And lastly, you don't seem to have any bear protection like electric fencing. Are you not bothered by them?
