Cheap stethoscope is what I use to listen to hives in question. I use screened bottom boards and can tell just by looking at it, the activity goring on. Nicely done. Have 6 inches of snow now with mixed with sleet in SE Nebraska

This is my 2nd year as a rookie beekeeper and I made these mistakes you speak of and to remedy my anxiousness of wanting to know the status of my hives, I inserted a thermocouple in each hive to allow me to know what the temperature is inside the hive. No disturbing the bees other than a thin wire in the center of the top box that they don't seem to mind. Works great and you can kind of gauge where the cluster is by fluctuating temperature readings. Middle of Iowa here and haven't been in hives since 1st week of October.

Kind of interesting to hear this side about not going in the hive after they close it up. Some beekeeping sites advocate going in in January or February to check on honey stores and emergency feed. This sounds like a good idea. Put the sugar in early and stay away. I used to have hives and remember going in them in January and wondering why they were dead in April. I dont think I was the total cause of their demise but I probably didn't help. Now I build hives to sell cause of my bad hip and arthritis. Good advice David

You can tell how much honey is in the hive by slowly lifting up the back end of the hive, you will learn by doing this to see how heavy a hive is that has plenty of honey.

There is a seminar that describes his experiment using 100 colonies in a very harsh winter. He removed the queens from 50 colonies to observe the differences throughout winter. The 50 queenless colonies got dysentery. His conclusion was that the queen-right colonies avoided dysentery only because there were eggs to feed in the long periods of freezing weather without cleansing flights. The queen DOES lay eggs in the worst of winter weather, most beekeepers simply never get to inspect the hives to observe it. Feeding the eggs from their own gut contents in these conditions is the only way to expel the proteins from the workers bodies and not poop all over themselves. The eggs themselves may or may not be viable, that was not determined from the experiment.
@aarongriffin81
@aarongriffin81 3 жыл бұрын
Queenless colonies have the physical capability of surviving all winter.....IF they have regular clensing flights. The fact that the queen is vital for winter survival in extreme winters and dysentery is the cause of death when she is missing shows how important a few eggs are for the colony when they need to go poop.
@beasbeesrva2615
@beasbeesrva2615 3 жыл бұрын
Agree that a queenless colony is viable all winter. Hear all the time about folks that think their colony is queenless in October and want to combine. I say let them ride. If truly queenless, use for early splits but most often there will be a laying queen in there come spring.

Up here in the North, I use a rapid round in an insulated medium super, and also a full insulated cover.We had a week of 60s after our first snow, and my hives took 5 gal of 2:1 from a bucket feeder...and today it was 63°. Back to the freezer now though. I enjoy your common sense approach!

My bees haven't propolized my inner lid for a long time. I've opened my hive a couple of times to feed the bees, and haven't had any issues. If you don't think you're Bees need any feed, then leave them alone. However not checking on them at all throughout the winter is a good way to find a dead Hive in the spring

Minnesota, our queens will stop laying. Start up is in March to April depending on our first pussywillow blooms. During the Fall/Spring on a warmer day the bees loosen their cluster, great time to hit the mites with Oxalic acid! A good example, Wednesday the 9th will be 45 here. Time for a "mite happy death" fogging. We always lay sugar bricks (on feeder space screenboard) under our burlap quilt boards. AND you can open the top of the hive with that rig. Lift the lid, move the wadded burlap and look down through the inner cover hole. If you see the sugar blocks you're good. Provided you did your heavy feeding and mite control through August to November.. So how much honey stores are in your hives? Tip them just a bit. We use double supers and each box should weigh in at about 80 pounds, total 160. If they tip easy, you're in trouble. Hope this helps. 8 years a 30 below northern beekeeper.

Today is November 21st and its 83 degrees here in southeast Ga. most of the Golden Rod has went to seed. Just came in from Cutting grass. Lost one weak hive from robbing 2 weeks ago but the hive I have is doing well. It is a Horizontal Hive that I built. Last week doing a Inspection I had 3 deep frames full of brood with 3 frames of honey and then another frame of partial Brood and a Cluster on drone brood around 3 inch Diameter. Still have drone Bees on some of the frames.18 frames deep and Medium along with a in hive feeder with 2 to 1 sugar water. 2 frames had empty comb but the rest had Honey and or pollen plus the frames with brood. Plan on making a sugar cake on a deep frame between hardware cloth and place it next to the brood frames. Late December , Jan and Feb my get cold for a few days but by Feb the Blueberries are in Bloom. I guess I will see how well the Bees over winter in the Horizontal Box. Right now they are all in my Box of Ultra Bee Pollen Sub.

I made top covers that are feeder shims so the bees only have one seam to propylize and I have an insulated lid and I drilled a hole for my rapid round to fit exactly in the hole so I can feed all winter long if I have to and it doesn’t disturb the bees at all , I swear by a feeder shim top cover and rapid round, it’s the best all around set up and the bees stay safe all winter and they won’t get cold or hungry and the set up works well all year round, im actually making some insulating telescopic lids with insulation and feeder shim tops as I type this , im waiting for my glue to dry on the last one 😀

Also forgot to say , in the top of Tele-cover I use 2" thick Dow cavitymate dense insulation board it has I think R-12, I put on cover , then set a cinder-block on top and tape that also. I've not had a problem with condensation yet. But I'm build colony's from a single farel hive from 100 yr. old tree, started 3 yrs. ago, I have 8 of them now. Thanks for your work buddy. We have a few colonies here in northeast Alabama. Last winter I tried casing the outside of our hives with 3/4” thick insulated foam board secured with the smaller rolls of plastic wrap usually used for packaging. It seemed to have worked well and it stayed on the boxes all winter. I know we don’t have that bad of winters here but I think that if the insulation keeps the box a few degrees warmer throughout the winter then the colony can possibly move around to get to there food stores better. The winter of 2018 we had some moisture issues on the underside of the inner cover so we built and used some hive extenders with room for feeders last winter also to help with ventilation. The extender only had a small hole in the top of the front and back for a small amount of flow through so if the bees need to and if they have the ability they can govern the flow with propolis as they see fit. I have seen videos that warn about moisture and now is the time to plan ahead.

Was over at Mom's a couple of days ago, and there were honeybees all over her dill plants, they were still blooming, along with her roses. Not sure about goldenrod, living in town we don't see much anymore. Had a neighbor that kept a nice big stand of goldenrod for the bees, refused to cut it down and constantly fought the city over it, LOL. Unfortunately he passed away last year and his kids cut it all down when they remodeled the house. Anyway, this is in south-central Oklahoma. Headed to a town about 40 miles away tomorrow, I'll keep my eyes peeled for what's still blooming. Say...will the pollen from dill flowers make sourdough bee bread? LOL.

Close them up at night, ratchet strap the boxes together. Use two 2x4s, strapped to the boxes, like a stretcher underneath. Pickup or a trailer would be best. You can just slide then in amd strap them down. If a truck or trailer isn't an option, do the same thing but adapt to whatever other vehicle you have for transport. Be prepared, they're heavy. First year beekeeper. First winter. I live in canton,ga. I thought I did everything right to winterize. I have a screened bb and internal gravity feeder. Had the top insulated. I saw video to use sugar 2-1 then dec1 sugar patty. I didn’t see them flying out today, checked, my girls are all dead. 😓...... 3-4 weeks ago, the bees were all over the grass and ground. Some crawling some dead. Not sure what that means. Thanks for any input

Depends on where you live, what equipment you want (5 frame, 8 frame, 10 frame?) How many hives do you want to keep? I have 2, 10 frames hives with alittle extra equipment. Right now all they are, are a deep, and medium, thats all they built up to b4 winter for my first year. But i have 6 other medium boxes along with the frames. And want to only keep about 10 hives, and just build them up vertically. I spent $200 for the 1 hive that included BB, 1 deep, 4 medium, Q excluder, inner cover and telescoping top. Same amount for the other one too. I spent $115? For 100 medium frames, and $.98 per each deep frame and i got 30 of these from a guy off facebook marketplace. And i spent $75 on a 5 frame nuc of bee's from a local hobbiest beekeeper. I also invested into an electric fence solar, $175, and wire $25 off facebook marketplace. I probably spent at least $1,000 already. So really depends on you.

@@briannad4513 My first year I spent $2,000 or more and I have 7 hives and extraction equipment. I got 350 lbs of honey extracted and sold for $8 a lb. so I came out even the first year. Next year I should make some money.

@@russellkoopman3004 i didn't buy an extractor but plan to get more equipment. I didn't start out the most prepared tho. I could have put more $$$ into it but this is my first year and even after i studied a whole year b4 starting beekeeping, apparently i didn't do enough studying.

if u want to know if u have bees still alive in the hive. use a plastic tube 3/8 od about 2.5 ft long. insert into opening about 2 inches. put other end in your ear and listen. u will hear light buzzing if u still have bees in hive that are alive. Don't knock on hive, to wake them up. do not do anything to disturb them. just listen for buzzing. if alot of buzzing u probably have alot of bees still alive. if less buzzing there are still bees alive . do not tap on hive do not open hive. till bees start to emerge on their own. I'm 30 miles northwest of charlotte nc. 2 hives feeding 2 to 1 the heaviest is still taking it but the lighter one isn't. Both double deeps. The lighter one has only about 40lbs in the top deep. Does anyone experience lighter colonies not taking syrup?
@beasbeesrva2615
@beasbeesrva2615 3 жыл бұрын
Andrew, lighter hives that are not taking in syrup are generally light on bees too. Does not mean they won't make it, but should be fed sugar bricks ad emergency rations.
