Sorry for the late video. We took a couple of days off after 31 days of filming and uploading. True to form, we managed to have one day of not doing anything in the house or on the land, but today we gave in and did a bit of work.

I am fascinated by old stone houses. They are very rare in the western US. Our homes are wood framed. A house left abandoned for decades would probably fall down. Thank you for taking us along on your adventure.
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
I have never thought about a wood framed building not lasting long if left in the same way as these stone houses. Our outbuildings, which I am sure you have heard us say in the past are 200+ years old and that blows our minds. It isn't even old compared to some buildings around, but those buildings are now in our care. Not that we did a good job with the roof on the one, but we won't mention that bit lol. We often wonder how hard it was, or how much hard work it was to build with these stones, some of them are so heavy. And something that was built 200 years ago with just a mud type mixture between the stones is still stood today. Dawn can't wait to make a start with all the lime work outside when the weather changes. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)

Good morning Colin It is something we are looking forward to, but we do also look back even now at some of the videos and go "wow". Just opening the front door now into the hallway then and now is always a wow. A bit of carpet makes a huge difference too. Hi Dawn and Ben, if anyone deserves time off, it is you both. You have spoiled us over the past month with a video to watch each day and whilst I have enjoyed every moment, I believe that on top of all the work it is an extra 'chore' that might get a bit much for you to keep up with. Just keep dong what you do best and the rest of us can just be patient and look forward to catching up with progress as you find time to update. The doorway looks great with panelling and it looks great without, it will be interesting to discover what the final decision is on the finish there and how it ends up looking :)

Thank you Ellen, that is very thoughtful of you indeed. We love to share the daily but we won't say it isn't hard work. @thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Hi Linda, thank you for going back and watching more. We really hope this is the case but our house was built on top of a massive rock. Some of it is exposed outside our house, in the road and also the field across the lane. He have a feeling that once we try to dig down we will hit the rock. The video the the electric pole being installed, if you haven't seen it, shows what they had to break through to just a pole in. At worse, once we have dug the last of the grass and mud from around the house we will expose the top of the rock. The water will have to flow somewhere. That will be a job in the near future, if only to remove the grass and mud. Thank you again for commenting :-)

Good evening Dawn and Ben! A lovely change of pace for you both and your viewers! So glad you are planning on keeping the doors as they are truly beautiful. Carpet is a great thing to use until you have finished the room and can finally use it as a true completed living room. You did a super job with the jams and the rest of the door surrounds. Good that you are getting a chance to remove the woodworm detritus and get the moisture out of the walls. Not sure why the gas produces condensation but I bet you could use Google to find out! Ah the internet- can’t live with it and can’t live without it. What has happened in the last decade or two. Have a good day and see you in your next vlog either tomorrow or the following day. 😊😉

Good morning Cristy, hope you are well. Yes, it has needed doing for a while now and with being given a carpet the time was right. A couple of easy days was a nice break too. Getting rid of the door frame was really nice, like you say, helps get rid of the moisture in the walls behind the frame. There is a brilliant comment on this video which explains in detail why you get moisture from the gas fires, it is a great answer. Our internet was good, not the fastest to upload but it was useable. Now for some reason it is really bad. It is OK if we don't need a video uploading quickly, like this video lol. Thank you for always watching and commenting and yes, see you Tuesday :-)

Evening workers, I thought hang on you normally have mud on your faces and half a tree on your shoulders. Nowt wrong with the carpet, help along the way is all you need. In 1964 I started my Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship and we had to knock cement courses out from between whatever the wall was, with a Cold Chisel and lump hammer so that you could then bang in a wooden semi curved wedge into the hole you dug out to enable you to either nail or screw your fixture to. No power drills and plastic plugs. Oh happy days!. Your doing a fantastic job, good thinking with the water excess. Take care, see you tomorrow. 🤓🐄🐐🐓🌴
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Hi Adrian When we first saw wooden plugs we knew we were in the right place as they are just a sign of old. Unless of course you look at the ones I have done since being here, most for the electric timber plates on the walls. It just works doesn't it. I didn't use a cold chisel though, it was a big 6kg SDS drill lol. I am really pleased with the extra water capture, every drip of water I hear is going into the new tank is a smile on my face, The big rug is great, we have lovely neighbours. Thanks for commenting Adrian :-)

I hope you put a woodworm treatment on the timber you used for the electric especially being so close to the door.
@thecornerhouseproject6 ай бұрын
Hi Helen The timber is pre-treated and also had a shower of clear wood treatment for all the nasties. It is only a temporary strip of timber but anything which keeps the bugs away is worth it as that door frame wasn't pleasent. Thanks you for watching and commenting :-)

The second arch-shaped bit is called a reveal. It might have a strip attached called a jamb, that the door shuts against.
@peterdowden76949 ай бұрын
I see now there are two reveals with quite a thick jamb between.
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Hi Peter, that's the word, the reveal. Yes, both the kitchen door and the livingroom doors are both double thickness, about 2 feet thick walls. Spinning round on my seat in the kitchen to look, the wall may be thicker then the living room. I plan on just using some joist to make a quick frame so we can hang the door back on for now. Anything pre-plastering or whatever renovation happens to the walls will only mess up anything nice. Thank you for commenting on this video, I learn all sorts on here from people like you. Thank you again :-)

If the dust is that bad in all of the wood throughout the farmhouse I would just get rid of all existing wood and replace with new. Take photos first and replicate it. We had to do it with our house.
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
We started out wanting to save as much as we could, but so much of it is beyond help so we are going to be doing like you say and replicating it. So much of the wood in the house was so badly woodworm eaten. Luckily the bits that matter like the stairs and the roof managed to get off quite lightly, so that’s at least something.

Hi Diane Sadly, the only thing this is good for is the fire. The dust is years and years of woodworm from when the house was empty. No doors slamming or breeze blowing to move it away. Amazing how thick that wall is. You mentioned that the exterior was rendered in concrete? I’ve heard other KZbinrs talk about not rendering stone with concrete as it traps moisture, that it should be done in lime mortar. (?)
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Yes Ed, what you have heard is 100% right. The lime lets moisture in and out and it evaporates on the outside of the walls. Concrete doesn't breath so moisture can't get out and sits in the walls. The concrete removal will be a huge undertaking, but will be easier now we have the scaffold towers. We are not sure we will get to do it this year not, but if not this year, it will be next. Scroll down to @Mitch-Hendren comment, he explains it really well. Thank you for always joining us. See you Tuesday :-)

Thank you! We’re not sure, I think Ben would probably go for a normalish door frame, but I don’t know…I really like the style of the door frames in the house. Part of me thinks no wood at all against the stones might be a better thing as any wood that has touched the stones had succumbed to the woodworm! Lots to think about lol

We had a huge amount of moisture and condensation in our bungalow in Mayo. We installed a Positive input ventilation system from Nuaire. It worked brilliantly to eradicate the moisture in the air.
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Are they the system that pushes air into the house which in turn pushes the damp air out? It seems to be the Calor gas heaters which cause the most condensation, once we get a stove fitted in the living room we are hoping it will be a thing of the past, but time will tell.
@lavignemorte9 ай бұрын
@thecornerhouseproject Yes, that's it. It pumps filtered air into the house. We had our fitted in the loft space with a vent through the ceiling. They have several models including a heating air version. The calor gas is a big culprit for sure but actually even us humans expire a huge amount of moisture just breathing 😲. I can't remember all the information but the PIV does something like 2-3 complete air change in the property a day.

This was really interesting to see what was underneath. If you're open to suggestions, I think the exposed stone would look really good once it is cleaned up and re-pointed. Not sure if the door serves a reaI purpose in modern living. Maybe the original idea was to contain the heat in the room when it was occupied and not let it escape upstairs until it was time to go to bed. Will be interesting to see how you deal with the rubble layer; it definitely calls for hard hats. Best regards.
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
It would be soo lovely to leave it expose and it is such a temptation because of how bloody lovely it looks. I think we will definitely clean it up and repoint and maybe we will see from there . Ideally we do need the door back on as it does help with the heat retention, but maybe once we have our heating system sorted and maybe have radiators around it could be something we look at in the future. Yeah that rubble layer is a conundrum for sure! The majority of it is wedged but I would think as soon as we start to mess it about it will start to shift, so yes definitley one for hard hats and some thinking! 🤔 We will have the same problem with the window lintels all around the house too! 🫣😘

Ben you are pretty good at doing some woodwork. Take the measurements off the old frame and knock up new pieces, treat the new wood if it isn't already and you could have that framed up again in no time. You can buy some fancy trim and double it up for the design around the edges if you don't have the tools to router them. You will want to have a door there if the living room is ever used for a guest room. (If I ever win the lottery I'll need a place to sleep lol)

Now, I just need about 5 months to psych myself up to doing it. Dawn will have it done quicker than me. Yes, really needs the door back on as the doors here are lovely. Also, we don't have any spare door space left in our bedroom. We have 3 spare ones in there already from the partitions that have gone lol. You've done pretty good so far for a Geek lol Dawn is a great motivator! You are an amazing team. It hasn't been a year yet and look what you have accomplished. That outbuilding roof was already collapsed - I went back over the video's and the lintel above the door was snapped in half. It needed a new support and acro props - I missed it. Neither of you should have been inside that building the way it was. It could have come down at any time ivy or no ivy. Glad you weren't in there when it happened. Not either of your fault. You can put in a temp board with acro prop to change out the rotten wood in the doorway, I watched someone else do it with a window. A bit fiddly and slow going but they got the wood replaced and stones above repointed with lime. The wood is there to attach ceiling slats, door frames and window frames. So all openings should have a lintel with wood under them. hard hats and masks required 😉

I like to think of myself as not a geek you would look at and say "he's a geek" lol. I am a hidden geek maybe. The timbers are already a rough size to be able to hang the door back on but we are deciding if to bother for now. Depends on how much warmer the rug makes it feel in the living room. There will be a door on it when you come and stay though hahaha. Thanks for the vote of confidence. Yes, we don't do too badly as a team. Have a nice day, hope it isn't too cold.

If you all is concrete render outside, instead of lime mortar, the concrete seals, the moisture in instead of letting it breathe, but they always used to put concrete on the outside years ago, not knowing what damage it would do
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Yeah the front of the house is concrete render, but the sides and back of the house are lime (luckily) we could certainly tell with how badly rotted the joists were in the front of the house wall pockets in comparison to the back, which were relatively unscathed going into the wall pockets. I’m not sure whether we will be able to get round to taking the render off the front this year as we have repointing to do on the sides and back of the house which is more important to get done and also the outbuilding needs repointing and repairing to ultimately get a roof back on it.

It could be treated with wood hardener as you’ve a,ready treated for worm may be able to reuse then
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment Sylvia. Although the camera made it look like the wood was quite thick, the left and right surrounds were quite literally a shell with no weight to it at all. We may be able to save some of it using those methods, but for now it is our of the house. We have the hardener ready :-) With woodworm hatching season coming up, the more timber like that out of the house the better, even though it has been treated, there is no guarantee it has killed or will prevent wood worm from hatching. It could be a 3 or 4 year process of treating any remaining timber before they are all irradiated. Thank you for watching and commenting with suggestions. Hopefully some will be saved.

The humidity that comes from gas fires (& all fires, to differing extents) is part of the smoke. The process of turning organic matter into heat combines hydrogen & oxygen into H2O molecules, at the same time that it's creating better-known combustion products such as CO2 and carbon monoxide. Since it's well above boiling temperature, the H2O is produced as steam (it's much of the white component of woodsmoke), some of which enters your room & cools down into water vapor/humidity. The amount of H2O produced varies with the type of fuel, combustion temperature , etc; but some water will always be produced. Pedantic geekery aside, what fun to watch such you did on March 3 in Ireland here in Seattle while it's still March 3rd. It's like we're on the same planet & everything! ((But don't worry that I'll expect this sort of alacrity every day, or even every March 3.) Congratulations on two jobs that both worked out well & took less(!) time than expected. 🥳
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
I don't know if you have watched the TV Series called "The Big Bang Theory", but are Professor Proton from said series? hahaha. That is brilliant Evelyn, thank you so much for that as now I know why the gas fires produce condensation on the windows. The dehumidifier deals with it really well though. It is odd isn't it. I do like time zones, especially as we have some viewers in San Francisco 8 hours behind us and we have some in Australia which is I think 9 hours in front of us. Nearly a whole day. March 3rd 2025 - remind me nearer the time and I will see what we can do :-) Yep, two more jobs done in the house, one really needed doing and didn't take long at all. Thank you as always :-) PS - Alacrity, what a great word :-)
@evelyngorfram93069 ай бұрын
I haven't seen any of the Big Bang Theory episodes with Professor Proton, but he sounds like my kind of guy. (I studied Materials Science/Engineering in college; &, as a teaching assistant during grad school, gained a slight reputation for wild analogies.) I'm really glad my explanation made sense & was helpful - it can be hard to gauge listener comprehension over the internet. One of my favorite Peanuts cartoons has a brooding Linus asking "What if tomorrow never comes?," & Lucy replying "It's already tomorrow in Australia." My sister named a dog Alacrity (although he was Alec for short). She said that, that way: "Every morning, I can jump out of bed with Alacrity!" Have a great day/week/interval until your next video post.

Thanks guys. I’m still looking forward to the property’s namesake “Corner” with the interior green wall. 18” to the road if I recall correctly. How do you deal with drainage in that corner? Unless you’re making the green wall a feature 😉✌️💚
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Thank you very very much indeed Dish :) that is very very kind. I think 11ft to the road, but since the grass has gone from the front of the house, the 18" to tarmac could be about right lol. The green wall has long gone and not returned since we have had the dehumidifier running and the heater too. Hopefully it won't be long until the chimney liner gets dropped down (we hope it fits) and then a stove fitted. Since Dawn did the small channels and dug out that really wet corner to the corner stone in the ground, the damp has reduced immensely. Soon we will remove all of the remaining mud and grass from the front and sides of the house too see how we will tackle the little rock the house was built on. We think it will be interesting. But, even if we can't dig down water will run around the house and not sit in grass or pool anywhere. Wish us luck. OR - we could save all the effort and stick a frame around any green which grows on the wall inside hahahah. Thank you again Dish, that is really kind of you.

Sadly we couldn’t save a lot of this frame work as the woodworm and eaten it down to the varnish, so there wasn’t a whole lot of wood left. We will replace it with an indentical framework though as we love all those features in the house. Yes that’s the principal with the houses, the stonework acts like a storage heather, I think it’s called thermal mass but don’t quote me in that! 😂

Generally I believe woodworm treatment works on bare wood, if it’s painted or lacquered, that needs to be removed before treatment.. check the instructions to see what it says on your tin 🤔
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Hi and good evening. We always doubted how well it would work on varnished or painted timber. The only original wood that will stay in the house will be the doors and stairs. The rest has either gone or going. The timbers we have put in have all been treated and we will be treating it as well as smoke bombing again. As far as we know, woodworm has been in the house a long long time so could take a good while to get rid of it all. But treatment will continue. Thank you for commenting tonight :-)

I bet that rug is so nice to have when trying to relax and you don’t have that cold floor. Ben we have buds but no blossoms on any trees here. Golly that does look like a big doorway once you pulled everything away. I would be inclined to show it off by just having the joints repointed, then having a simple door jam with the door, but I don’t know what your vision is for how you want you home to look like. Even if you replace all that woodwork or keep the stone exposed, it will look lovely. Are you planning, and I know you have so much to do, to refinish the door?
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Good morning Dory, how are you today? I am sure the blossom will soon be showing and you will be outside counting them in all hours of the day hahaha. You can feel the difference with the rug, not sure if it is psychological or not but does feel warmer and smells warmer too. It will certainly do something, like you say, it is covering the cold, hard floor. Isn't the door way stone great.... we will be so torn with the decision of reproduce the door way or keep the stone exposed.... we will see. With refinishing the door, something will be done with them, we are just not sure what yet. Back to bare wood? Back to varnish / stain, not sure. Another thing time will tell lol. Thank you so much for always joining us. Maybe today you will have one blossom :-)

Sadly not, there was more dust than wood remaining. The bottom of the frames were gone and the bottom hinge had nothing left to screw in to. The fireplace is out of use at the moment as it leaks smoke into the bedroom above, or at least the loft space. So since we found that problem, it hasn't been used. The doors really are lovely, they weigh a tonne too. As always, thank you :-)

I believe I would treat all the wood in the house to kill the wood worm so it won't spread to ur new wood even ur stairs.. I've seen channels treat everything! In the US we call it termites 😊
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Good morning to you :-) Yes, already done. We both smoke bombed it all after spraying it all down with treatment. Landing, windows, stairs, door frames and even the floor that remained upstairs was covered even though we knew it was coming out. It is something we are keeping a close eye on and will be spraying it all again and smoke bombing too. With the house constantly drying out, the timbers are much much dryer now which also stops the woodworm. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and being a channel member :)
@ChristineKelly10007 ай бұрын
A Google search says they are not the same: Woodworm is the larvae of specific types of beetles while termites are a type of cockroaches living in colonies. Termites do not bore visible holes like the woodworms in the wooden furniture. Hence, termites are much harder to detect. 😊

Woodworms are absolute b****s. They get everywhere thats out of sight or more to the point out of spray range. . must admit I do like the idea of leaving bare stone. Just make a door frame big enough to cover the centre. Theres not a lot to a door frame . The wall that gets wettest is the one that gets the weather unfortunately. As shown by your paint getting worn off it so quickly Then of course cement not lime render traps the moisture in Its meant to wick up the wall then be evaporated outside . Leaving inside dry As long as it can evaporate faster than it wicks up it'll stay healthy. Its how stone buildings work.. Im learning how to slate a roof today . Through necessity not a sudden urge to learn something... Ive got as far as battens and underlayment. First slate tomorrow. Carpet looks great . Makes a difference losing that echo in a room Cheers .
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Good evening Mitch, we couldn't agree more with everything you say about the lime render vs concrete. Our entire front needs the concrete removing before we re lime render it, but it is one of those things can can wait a little while. We know it needs doing, but getting the grass gone at the front will help with drainage etc. Roofing sounds like you have it all under control. Did you get different slates in the end? Good luck with it all and photos will be nice (insert Winkey face here) I never noticed a lack of echo, I will have to watch it and see. Thanks for watching and commenting :-)

All might not be lost. I used to watch a french chateau channel and they had wood like this and they treated it with Xylophene (for pests), then a stabiliser, then a hardener. You can treat it better now you have taken them down and treat both sides. Escape to the Dream was its name and around last Summer they were doing this sort of stuff and it will give you a step by step guide on how and what to do, if you are interested. That door needs that frame style back again to keep its grandeur. That carpet is a perfect size and done you a good turn. The fire grate is stunning, shame you would have to get rid for a burner. Are you going to paint the paint effect in green and red on the fireplace itself?
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Oh definitely interested, I will have a watch as I don’t enjoy having to get rid of the bits in the house 🙁 and if we can save it I would prefer that. We have already had to lose so much out of here and it would be a shame to lose anymore. Although I do think parts of the door frame may be too far gone. It’s almost paper thin in places. I agree with the door needing the frame for the grandeur! The fireplace I am so sad about. We can’t use it anyway at the moment as it plumes smoke out into the bedroom upstairs and we don’t know where it is leaking from but it does seem to come out of the roof in places, so the plan is to get a flue put in but we’ve then since learnt it can only be a certain size (can’t remember what size now) if you want it to be an open fire our chimney is too small for the guidelines! 🙁 so it will have to be a stove unfortunately. Yes, we will paint over the red and green effect I think. It will look nice all one colour I think. 😘

Well funny you should say that…because although doorways are typically quite deep, we have been told that the house was actually built in 2 halves. We don’t know the ins and outs of it or dates of when each part was built. We would absolutely love a definitive answer because it puzzles us no end! We could certainly tell from doing the floor on the kitchen side and then moving onto the living room side that the construction was very different on the living room side. More polished, if you like, in the construction of it on the living room side. It’s definitely a head scratcher!
