Күн бұрын

My analysis of why and how A Day To Remember became one of the biggest bands of their generation. I go over the 3 key factors for their success, and what it means for you from the perspective of marketing your band, music or product.
Some of what I cover:
- Why their songs are so much better than every other band in their genre (and why their Kelly Clarkson cover worked so well)
- A very detailed look at the making of the "Right Back At It Again" music video (directed by Drew Russ), the "Common Courtesy" webisodes and the packaging for the "Bad Vibrations" deluxe version
- How "Homesick" and "What Separates Me From You" went gold, how "If It Means A Lot To You" went platinum and how "Bad Vibrations" went to #2 on Billboard
- Why ADTR continued to get bigger even as their former peers like Sleeping With Sirens quickly went downhill
- The key thing they share with bands like Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red, Parkway Drive and Every Time I Die

personally, i think ADTR was so good because (for me, at least) they bridged the gap between softer pop punk stuff and harder, post hardcore music. before ADTR i hated music with any type of screaming in it, but ADTR did it in such a melodic way it was so pleasant to hear. great video brotha

I booked A Day to Remember on their first tour after they signed with Victory. They were amazing guys and it was one of the best shows they brought to my old venue. It was in the middle of the country pretty much and they brought about 500 people with only MySpace and hanging flyers around the area. First bigger show I ever booked and it will always be an amazing memory! It was a day to remember!!!!

Havoc Faction I do too. MySpace was so good for the music scene in Atlanta and Douglasville back in the early 2000’s. My band would get booked so easy because of it. I would also throw house shows for local bands and end up with 200+- people at my house. I really miss those days and the closeness of the scene.

Another key point, in my opinion, would be Jeremy McKinnon. His voice is so unique that it pushes the band above everyone else. I think of this often: Jeremy McKinnon can take any song idea, arrangement, etc and write a vocal melody to it, and it instantly becomes something catchy. Just look at their wide variety of songs they've written. They all go in different directions, but Jeremy seems to pull it back and turn it into an "A day to remember" song
@ThePunkRockMBA
@ThePunkRockMBA 6 жыл бұрын
I actually had like 3 minutes about this exact thing which I cut out-- you nailed it! Jeremy is a great songwriter, especially when it comes to catchy vocal melodies. 2 other key people on the team who add even more awesomeness are Andrew Wade (aka Big Boss) who has recorded most of their stuff and is also extremely good with vocals, especially big harmony arrangements and stuff, and Tom Denney. A lot of people don't know that he wrote a lot of their best songs and continued to work with them at least thru Common Courtesy (not sure if he worked on Bad Vibrations).

A big addition to your points of ADTR being relatable is their All I Want music video. In the peak of 2011 metalcore, getting some cameo appearances from other similar bands was a really solid move cementing their addictive personalities, showcased their wide appeal of genres from MxPX to The Acacia Strain, and further expanded their packaging. It's like asking the viewer "Do you like Silverstein, The Devil Wears Prada or [insert band cameo], you will probably enjoy ADTR and this music video".

Your point on being relatable is key. In high school, I was getting into metal and other heavy guitar music, but I felt like an outsider, not being "brutal." When I first saw the video for Plot to Bomb the Panhandle, I thought, "hey, I could see myself being in a band like this." That kept me driven to keep playing guitar. Now I may be in a top 40 cover band and not in anything like ADTR, but they've been a huge influence to me as a musician.

In my opinion, it's the catchy hooks in every single part of their songs, including verses, choruses, bridges, and breakdowns. It simply comes down to good songwriting. All of their albums can be played from start to finish and you can jam to it, there's never a dull moment with these guys.

About Common Courtesy's chart number: the initial digital sales sold enough to debut at the top 5 of the Billboard 200, but it wasn't eligible at the time because it was digital-only (that would change later that year when Beyonce dropped her self-titled album on iTunes by surprise). It only got charted once physical versions came out months later.

There isn't a single song that I dislike by ADTR, but I'd have to say their album 'Homesick' is where McKinnon found his voice and the overall sound quality and band cohesiveness really matured. FTWHH was iconic but still sounded garage studio quality, and carried the same high pitch vocals that too many bands used at the time, even though ADTR's style was vastly different. The contrast between early ADTR and their new stuff is pretty neat IMO, since they're both so good. It adds variety and serves as a hallmark of a changing era that they pioneered. I'm glad they stepped it up though. It's obvious they did alot of experimenting since they started self producing with their last two albums and so they took a bit longer for me to appreciate than WSMFY and Homesick, but each song has it's own unique quality that hooks me in. I love that though they have their same signature chugging, death growl, clean pop vocals and drum fills, they somehow manage to sound different from one song to the next.

Awesome videos. As someone who works in marketing and loves this type of music, I can't get enough of this. You're gonna hate me, but maybe The Wonder Years? One thing you got wrong though is the position of common courtesy on the billboard 200. While yes they only officially placed 30 for that album, that was only because of what was happening with their label at the time. So what ended up happening is they had two seperate releases for Common Courtesy, one for fans who preordered it, and on a later date they released it officially in stores. Billboard actually said that if both releases were counted in the same week it probably would have been a #1 album.

I've been a die hard fan since What Separates Me from You, and I gotta say, no band puts as consistently bangin' albums as much as ADTR. I first heard them in middle school, and they've been with me all through college. They never made any random changes that separated their fans (like going to full pop or something) and their style still hasn't gotten old. They were my gateway drug to better genres, and I'll never forget where I started.

They were one of the only bands in the metalcore scene that could headline 1.5k-2k venues back in 2014-2015. The loss of Austin Carlile as their vocalist sadly cost them big. They definitely were one of the only bands that heavy that had a fangirl base, at least from what I saw.

I want to see this dude do a band with checkered history. Of Mice did a many unique, planned things to break ceilings to reach their height right before they released “Cold War” and declined a bit before Austin left.

The structure part is kinda weird because you compare really early TDWP(2nd album) with ADTR on their 4th album whereas ADTR first two albums DEFINETELY have the clumsy "really heavy breakdown to really melodic chorus" with no actual transitions. TDWP did use the pop structure later as did 95% of metalcore bands with clean choruses tbqh.
@ThePunkRockMBA

Fair point- but compare “roots below” to “homesick” (they came out the same year) and the difference is night and day imo.
@paokalexthes
@paokalexthes 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed, the difference between "for those who have heart" and "homesick" was also night and day which says a lot about how much the band grew in just a few years. it was also then that TDWP went the other way and embraced more metal influences on their sound so that point is a huge turning stone for both of their careers. I agree with what someone else has mentioned, which is their ability to work with all different genres of bands, on tour (and in general) they have a lot of "-core" artists as well as more of the 'pop punk' types on their tours (like their fall 2017 tour introduced me to Wage War, also from Ocala.) their All I Want video including so many bands from different genres as well. these really open the doors for their fans and for fans of other bands to explore new artists, which is the beauty of this music scene! :-)

Even back on sywh, always wondered why he didnt give as much attention to the modern-day sass and spazzcore-derivative prog wank bands like DGD, TFOT, Fear Before, TSOAF, Closure in Moscow, etc. It even has its own sub-sub-microgenre these days: swancore, which describes funky dgd-style bands, usually with rnb vox, some of which are doing the whole rnbcore thing that began with Jonny Craig and was perfected with Issues. Even more clout to these bands because 95% of them are directly influenced by wanky 2000s screamo bands like Circle Takes the Square, Hot Cross, and City of Caterpillar for their drumming and jazzy chord progressions (which Will Swan then Purple Rain-ified). It's kind of amazing that DGD have gotten as big as they are with their ultra weirdo songwriting and eclectic influences, AND the fact that they've gone through multiple singers and had controversy with them being assholes, yet have still somehow managed to come out on top.

I've seen the rise (and in my opinion fall) of this band only through my own experience. I was there when they first played the show in my country (early 2009) which was a decent venue already with a lovely setlist. Near 6 months later they played across the street in a slightly bigger venue however still with the same attitude and this wasn't even a headline show. Another year later they played the same venue on their largest stage. It was a festival and they were headlining. Around 5 o clock they were sitting next to me in the local Burger King casually eating a burger, hardly anyone recognized them. Before I knew they blew up and played the biggest possible venues, with that came a certain kind of attitude from the fans. They went pop if you will, there was no stagediving, no moshpitting like it used to be and the stage was full of unnecessary stuff (like PWD did aswell), also they introduced those inflatable balls. I love crowd participation but this was exactly the kind of crowd that came there just for the acoustic 'If it means a lot to you'. I'm still a fan but I hardly check them out live anymore. I want to stagedive, crowdsurf, singalong and mosh through their set. Nowadays that's not possible anymore thanks to their popularity. It's a price I pay for seeing one of my fav bands get popular but it's sad to see that the DNA that made this band famous in first place is gone, even though you can still see the fire in some of their eyes like Josh, Neil and Alex. Also Jeremy once tweeted he wished to play floor shows again a few years ago which made me sad frankly. I doubt this is what they expected aswell. Memories stay forever.

Their willingness to tour with both metalcore and pop punk bands also helped in my opinion. Like, my brother saw them opening for Bayside back in like 2007 and that's how I originally found out about them. Then they brought out bands like The Devil Wears Prada, Sky Eats Airplane, Of Mice & Men, The Word Alive etc on their next few tours and then had ones like The House Party Tour which was pretty much all pop punk. I think I remember some of their European/international tours having openers like The Story So Far as well.
