A day-trip to Matsushima is worth doing if you're interested in exploring the Tohoku region of Japan. The 260 islands of Matsushima Bay, also famous for Matsushima Bay Cruises are collectively considered one of the "Three Most Scenic Spots of Japan."
Matsushima is located in Miyagi Prefecture. From Tokyo take a 90-minute bullet train ride to Sendai on the JR Tohoku Shinkansen. An approximately 40-minute train ride on the Senseki Line gets you to Matsushimakaigan Station.
All of Matsushima's major attractions are within walking distance from the station and the pier of Sightseeing cruises (though the pier is more centrally located).
Hop on a sightseeing cruise to enjoy the most popular close-up view of the islands in various shapes, names and history.
Matsushima is also a culinary destination. The bay is famous for its rich and flavorful oysters, eels, grilled kamaboko, grilled beef tongue (gyutan)and green soybean rice cake Zunda-mochi and ice cream.
