I usually hate fake dating bc it’s so childish especially when they’re grown adults. The best fake dating books are YA in my opinion. My favs are the Unhoneymooners, Funny Story, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and The Bodyguard. Great video 🤍

I have a love-hate relationship with fake dating. Before I didn't, but then Take A Hint, Dani Brown came into my life and changed the genre. For me, I think the trope working boils down to 3 things: 1). The reason for why they need to pretend to be a couple. Especially for adults 2). The creative/romantic ways that show the fine line between fake and real thinning 3). CHEMISTRY. The chemistry, the chemistry, the chemistry I need to feel the chemistry between the characters and not too many books deliver on that

I think I could enjoy fake dating if it were done with actual stakes. Like a lavender relationship to protect one or both parties or something like that.

I think there can be some use to the tropes when the writer is good enough to subvert or reimagine the trope in question for a new audience. But I also know that it's easy to do certain tropes when you jump on the bandwagon of publication so you gotta look for the ones that aren't just a cashgrab...

You’re definitely shining in your video essay era! A marriage of convenience deep dive would be great, marriage of convenience is one of my favourite tropes too. There can be so much angst and you can even sprinkle in some second chance romance in there too. A video essay with a deep dive into the rise, fall and possible resurgence of the dystopian genre (especially YA) would also be great to see.

If you dont mind me asking, do you have a recommendation list. I am a sucker for angst but ive never really found a marriage of convenience book with alot of angst. Ill say i over looked this trope. Its not really my fav but i picked a book with this trope and enjoyed. Do you have a rec. . with lots of angst, emotional slowburn...little to no spice but its fine if it has spice thats engaging. Great video!❤❤ Personally, I’ve never been into the Fake Dating trope. Like you said, it makes more sense for YA. I’m more okay with it for high schoolers but a lot of times it’s unnecessary and unbelievable for adults. Like you said, marriage of convenience (especially for financial reasons) just makes more sense and has more weight. Fake dating so that one person teaches the other about relationships or intercourse is dumb af to me, sorry😬. Like Google exists?? Even with fake marriage, there has to be a level of self-acknowledgment of how dumb or ridiculous the whole thing is for me to buy into it. Like in a tongue in cheek way. One of the reasons y I dislike this troupe is cz they make the rules that we wont like each other, but when one of them confesses and the other one isn't able to say it back, they are made out to be the bad person, like "oh u didn't reciprocate my feelings even tho we are fake dating,i thought u would start liking me" like u guys literally made rules pls shut up!! ik this doesn't happen in all stories and is a minor issue but still (or when a character fake dates to make the other fall for them but then gets mad that they don't)

I would love to see a deep dive into “enemies to lovers” or “friends to lovers” because it seems like these are tropes that have been watered down so much due to TikTok and the trope-ification of publishing. I would love to hear your thoughts one what you think are like peak of these tropes and what really makes them enemies or friends to lovers. In my personal opinion if they kiss before the midway point or even in the first book in a series it is not enemies to lovers !!
