I enjoyed playing Dead Cells when duel wielding shields was a viable strategy. Shield was my main weapon and I'd use a regular weapon to attack when they were vulnerable.

One of the best parts about playing Paladin in FFXIV, your only job with a traditional shield, is sometimes enemies attack you and it just deflects off your shield without you even doing anything. It makes a very satisfying little "ping" noise - which changes sometimes depending on which shield you have equipped! Love it. The sound engineers at squenix are rock stars.

The Risk of Rain series has some shields too, some of which having very unique mechanics. In the first Risk of Rain, the Enforcer character has the "Protect and Serve" ability, which puts up your shield while activated. It reduces movement speed, but blocks attacks from the front and you can shoot your shotgun with increased attack speed while the shield is out. In Risk of Rain 2, the Engineer character has a deployable bubble shield that blocks projectiles. However, monsters will still be able to walk in, so it kinda sucks sometimes. The Enforcer is sadly missing from Risk of Rain 2, but there is a mod that brings him back. Also, there are shield items too that give you shield which goes over your health bar. Sometimes the shield will replace portions of your health, sometimes the shield will add to it. Shield works differently compared to health- healing does not affect shield, and instead shield will regenerate after a few moments of not taking damage. It is best to consider the pros and cons of this when picking certain shield items, particularly the ones that replace your HP. There is also an item that fires low-damage missiles after hitting an enemy while you have shield, which is a nice synergy. There is also the Aegis item, which is shaped like a shield but does not actually give shield, instead giving barrier when overhealing. Barrier is different from both health and shield- it is an extra layer of health, but it decays over time. The maximum amount of barrier you can have is equal to your max health + shield (so having max barrier would give you 2x your maximum health + shield in total). Honorable mention to the Baldur Shell charm from Hollow Knight. While equipped, it is able to block an attack while you are healing. You will still take knockback (giving you invincibility frames), and the healing will be interrupted, wasting Soul (the resource you use to heal and use other spells). It can block up to four hits before breaking, after which you will need to return to a bench to restore it. It has rather limited use for these reasons, but can still prove helpful in niche cases.

Decent defense in Etrian Odyssey games are pretty rare. These are games where your guys will die in 2-3 hits starting out, and it stays that way when playing at pace with the difficulty curve. So the tank classes that bring their shields are always a welcome sight. Be they the Protectors from 1 and 2, the Hoplites from 3, the Fortresses from 4, or the Dragoons from 5 (who also use said shields as make-shift bunkers while they fire artillery), they have the ability to take what would be lethal damage for their allies because of their mighty shields! They rock.

Aspis is pronounced like "ace," actually, and it was clearly a rock (it's about power) of Sparta's military. In Final Fantasy XI, my favorite Final Fantasy, using a Shield and a one-handed weapon is, actually fairly unpopular compared to Dual Wield, but some Shields still see use regardless, sometimes for unique stat buffs (especially for backline spellcasters), sometimes because someone is using a Fencer build which uniquely rewards single-wielding one-handed weapons (and which Red Mages inexplicably don't get access to) and may as well use a Shield because of it, and sometimes because someone is playing Paladin, which has A+ Shield Skill, access to almost every Shield, and can take unique Shield-specific actions, like Shield Bash, which Stuns, or Intervene, which floors an enemy's Attack but has a 1-hour cooldown. Also, I am disappointed you mentioned Overwatch but not Team Fortress 2's Chargin' Targe. Demoknight is real and he is *COMING FOR YOU*

Nah this video was made for me. I loved defense but it hits different because I played basketball. Y'all liked MJ, Lebron, or some other person on offense. Closest I came to that was my enjoyment of Pistol Pete. But who I really liked? Mutombo. Don't know what he was like as a person since I was young, but the commercials he was in were funny and nothing was more satisfying than stuffing someone who thought they were about to get a freebie. I ALWAYS gravitate towards tank characters in games because while other people have a power fantasy of cutting dragons in half and what not, I have the power fantasy of being the guy to say "If you wanna get to them, you have to go through ME." Obviously the same quote can apply to people with swords or powerful abilities, but it hits different when you know your whole "thing" is protecting others. There's a tender spot in my heart for (kind) healers, supports, backline dps, mages etc. If you yelped out for help, I was probably the tank who turned around.

If there is one game that taught me the value of shields, then it's Dark Souls 3. In my first playthrough I used shields and then didn't for some hundred hours of playtime. When I used them again, they felt like a godsend, especially in dog heavy areas. Funniest thing was that I read so many comments on how hard and unfair Oceiros is. I simply said that he gets hardcountered by a decent shield and then the entire comment section had a meltdown.

If Energy shields count then the Reflekt Spell from Kingdom Hearts 2 deserves a mention. It blocks ANYHING and if somthing hits the energy shield the spell creates powerful explosions all around Sora.

You'd think that blocking only one hit is balanced, but Ink Armor broke Splatoon 2's meta because it was added to weapons that have a really easy time getting their specials very fast, resulting in making entire weapon classes not relevant anymore. Like chargers and blasters, which are entirely designed around one shoting ennemy players.

In Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, the gladiator character "Athena" has a shield that can absorb damage from enemy bullets, and when you're done holding the shield up, you can throw it to whip all that damage back at your enemies. That's pretty cool.

Shields are always a fun time. Whether they're a simple blocking tool or are also used for offence (i do like me some sword & shield, its like yeah I have a sword but I'd rather take the glorified dinner plate attached to my other arm and *punch the angry lizard in the face* with it) it's always nice to be able to just hunker down and EAT attacks like they never even existed.

can't believe you didn't mention the Shield Rod in Symphony of the Knight the absolute most ridiculous thing in an incredibly ridiculous game it allows you to use magic spells depending of your shield. so you can summon cows, get confused, reference gradius, a lot of things incluidng becoming completely invincible and the shield just destroying anything it touches

Assassin's Creed Valhalla lets you dual wield huge heavy shields and its the funniest thing, it really ROCKS! Just casually bashing in vikings with 2 big ass metal doors

EDF series you use shield for mobility and for shooting enemy behind the wall without peeking your body out nice or doing some niche play style Vermintide shield you use it for blocking over head attck which non of the weapons without shield cant do but then again shield weapon have better push and block angle

My favorite shield in gaming? Heh. Long comment below. 😂 Gotta be the Omegaward from Spiral Knights. This bad boy can only be obtained through a free in-game Event, March of the Tortodrones. It's definitely a huge drain in resource at first, 'cause you gotta assemble a bunch of materials from random parts of the roguelike repeatable trips in the game's main dungeon, the Clockwork. Then, you need 10 000 Crowns to forge the literal V.I.P. card that lets you in the event. From there, you fight two bosses (2 corrupted Tortodrones, a duo of sapient mechanical turtles) and an army of spawning minions that come with their own healers. So, it's tough. Your reward? You get a scary-ass shield with an upgraded Shield Bash attack that has a larger area of effect. It hits twice now, and you can stun more enemies for a few seconds (which severely slows them down, including bosses much bigger than you). The forcefield you summon as a defense mechanic is much more resilient, and is specifically designed to be almost completely immune to fire and ice damage, which are frequent problems in the game (Lord Vanaduke, the last big raid boss, is a fire dude). That Shield Bash, by the way, summons a goddamn mecha turle-shaped Jojo stand that roars then punches the shit out of people. It's strong enough, now, that it's on par with actual weapons, like the many sword, guns, and bombs available in the game. So... Yeah! Favorite shield by far. The work it took to get it was bullshit in part, but the reward, lucky me, was the most pleasant surprise I could get. Thank y'all for reading! Have yourselves a good one, yeah? 😁

8:20 no in Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker you can actively block while moving as long as you're Z-Targetting/L-Targetting and holding R, and in the former 2 games you can also crouch stab while blocking without a target. 18:00 no, E-Sports in general has been in great decline due to having too much put in too quick by investors, and then not enough returns coming back. I mean yeah Nintendo's been very lousy with handling their E-Sports scene, but the industry as a whole is in decline regardless of what Nintendo does.

The Mega Man Shields are pretty good. Junk Shield in MM7 or Jewel Satelite in MM9 are probably the best. But Acid Barrier and Bubble Shield aren't too bad. Rolling Shield and Triad Thunder in Mega Man X1 and Mega Man X3 as well. X3's also got Frost Shield, but it's oddly less defensive than Triad Thunder unless you charge it.

The thing about shields in souls games is that the smaller ones can only block 1-2 hits from a boss, and even then that'll cost all your stamina. the bigger chonkier shields will shrug them off no problem but you need a heavier investment in Strength to use them, which limits build variety. No matter what stat you pump, every build has access to the roll. You don't need Strength, you barely need Stamina, so you're free to put points into your offensive stat of choice + health. Also you can't use a shield and two hand your weapon, which limits build variety even more. A shield is not just an extra piece of armour in Dark Souls, it's a whole other weapon you have to build for. side note: shields in Skyrim are pretty meh since you can reach maximum damage reduction by blocking with a weapon too BUT shields have access to the shield charger perk, which allows you to tackle enemies and send them flying as if you used the FUS RO DAH shout. It's hilarious and my favourite part of shield builds. Just bully enemies by knocking them down and hitting them while they struggle to get up over and over. It's like the werewolf build but more tanky

I think the worst use of a guard/shield in a game is in JoJo's ASBR, where the guard input is the same as the back step input (or I just suck at fighting games, who knows) Extra: 18:39 In Spain it's translated like "line shooter" and "mega bubble", so, eh...

Reminds me of an anime called The Rising of the Shield Hero (very good, would recommend) where basically the only persona out of the main 4 worth anything and actually gets stuff done is the shield guy. The spear, sword, and bow guy being, quite honestly, extremely useless and egotistical. Especially spear guy.

Great video, Captain! Always love watching your content. On the topic of Smash Brothers and unconventional shields, there's also the Back Shield from Kid Icarus Uprising. It might be a temporary item in both games but it protects a vulnerable area, the behind. Floating shields are just as cool as dual wielding shields, and man those things durable! I guess the Pits' Guardian Orbitars could be an honorable mention, a good mix of defense and attack in Uprising and a funny Uno reverse in Smash. What's better than one flying shield? Two flying shields that shoot more flying shields!
