Then the switch era of Pokémon ruined it like they did with a lot of things. Transfer Greninja to SV and the form is gone. You just get a stat boost from the ability instead. Oh and you can never send it back. So the form is gone forever. LAME.

It got nerfed for the sake of singles. The only protean/libero mon that was good in vgc, at least to my memory was meowscarada in reg a and that was because it whooped dengo. Even with the nerf, battle bond is the only reason gren is still in OU, before it was sitting in UU.

The permanent sub discount is the coolest part of ffxiv 1.0 players, but your legacy character also gets unique dialogue where characters recognise you, and an exclusive archon tattoo which is an important lore thing where most of the important characters in the story that act similar to party members in other rpgs for story purposes, although obviously due to gameplay differences, aren't mainly playable.

It's not exactly the Archon tattoo (it does look quite different), it's even more unique than that. I don't know if it has an actual name, but I always called it Legacy Tattoo. Plus your own chocobo also gets the same tattoo on its beak which is a cute touch, it's like the same partner you had in your previous adventure reuniting with you after the years to carry you into the next journey.

The Little Big Planet series would let you transfer all your costumes and stickers/decorations across games. They'd also save any levels you uploaded online and would keep the customizations you made to your moon (the place you make levels) and your planet (where your own levels get uploaded) You could also play dlc from lbp1 in 2&3 and dlc from 2 in 3. It seems small now, but I always appreciated that as a kid

One last thing on the Sonic Adventure Chao Garden you forgot: by putting your Chao on Sonic Advance, you could transfer it to the OTHER Adventure game. That means that you can bring your shiny Gold Chao you robbed from that building in Sonic Adventure 1 in the superior garden of Adventure 2

Pokemon: Battle Revolution had nearly identical functionality to the Stadium games, where you could transfer your team from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl to Battle Revolution and use them in good 3D! (Sadly I couldn't use it much, tho I continue to hope and pray that we get Battle Revolution 2, with every Pokemon available in a high quality release)

In Shenmue 2 you can use your Shenmue 1's save to transfer all your money, moves (some of them being only obtainable on the first game), figurines and IIRC you start your adventure on the same day where you finished.

Here's one you missed: Ratchet & Clank's original trilogy has a mechanic where if you have a save file from the previous game on the same memory card, you get returning weapons from that game for free. Which is huge in the third game because that gives you the insanely overpowered Bouncer.

i think its really funny how everyone remembers the bouncer being overpowered, when in reality its just slightly above average. sure its good at killing stuff, but it takes soooo long for the main bomb to go off and all the little bombs to explode after. weapons like the plasma coil, which you also got from ratchet 2, were way stronger. you just shoot it once and everything for a shockingly long distance just dies super fast. but insomniac still caught on to everyone thinking the bouncer is overpowered, and actually made it really overpowered when they brought it back in rift apart

Ratchet and Clank 3 went even further than that. Not only could you get the prior weapons from R&C 2, but if you got through the Gadgetron planet in the first game, you’d receive a discount on all weapons in the game, because of a throw-away line in the first about an employee discount that only applied 2 years after being in the company. That really stuck out to me when I played the games and found it really cool. They didn’t have to do that, but they did, and I can only respect the dedication to the world of the game for that.

My favorite thing in Pokemon where they remember your save data is, if you had save data from pokemon black/white, if you inserted a copy of black2/white2 with memory linking you could go hunt for N's pokemon. Which were pokemon owned by the trainer N in Black and White and they have a special shining animation when entering in battle :D it was pretty cool!

I haven't looked into the code behind Undertale, but I'd imagine it's similar to how New Vegas mods work with .ini files, where stuff that happens in the game edits an external file independent of your save and the game checks that file whenever it starts up.

@@majora4prez543 it's not even that. barring the extra file made when you clear a genocide run, undertale just doesn't comepletely wipe the save file when you press new game(the exception being a 'true reset' which returns the save file to the state it was the first time you launched the game(but because the flag for having cleared a genocide run is an extra file, that will stick around unless you manually delete it & prevent steam cloud from restoring it if you're playing on steam))

The Ratchet and Clank series has awesome save data bonuses. If you have a Ratchet and Clank 1 save after the second Hoverboard race on Kalebo, you can get a discount on weapons in Up Your Arsenal. If you have a Ratchet and Clank 1 save with all the weapons bought you can get them for free in Going Commando. And if you have a Going Commando save with the megacorp weapons bought then you can get them all for free in Up Your Arsenal. And the last one is if you have a Ratchet 1 save you can get a OG Ratchet skin for Up Your Arsenal.

The Yo-kai Watch games on the 3DS had a lot of bonuses for having multiple games. Similar to how Pokemon did it, it had nice bonuses (except it was kinda a necessity for the 2nd games). For the second game(s), if you recently took a photo in the first game, you will receive a token to get exclusive yo kai. And if you linked the other versions of the second game, you would unlock an area to visit everyday for rewards and access even more exclusive yo kai. And in the 3rd game you could link all the versions of the second game AND the Blasters spin offs for even more bonus yo kai. Did I mention there were also DIGITAL EXCLUSIVE YO KAI?

A neat one not in the video is the Pikmin 3 Deluxe demo. Playing the demo unlocks ultra spicy mode (hard mode) in the full game. Otherwise you have to beat the main story to unlock ultra spicy mode.

LittleBigPlanet 1, 2 & 3 let you carry _everything_ over from the prior entry - all of the prizes and community objects you unlocked, all of your personal settings and saved costumes, and Sackboy would even have the exact same costume you were using in the last right off the bat without you having to recreate it. It was a great system to have, letting you smoothly jump into the next entry without losing anything. LittleBigPlanet Karting also unlocks a few items early that you'd otherwise have to find in the Story Mode if you have an LBP1 or 2 profile on your system. More of a minor thing, but it's still a nice gesture to returning players, at least.

A cool modern day indie example is with the "Gunman Clive" indie games on Switch. If you have them, and pick up the dev's other game "Mechstermination force" (a cool bossrush style shoot 'em up), you unlock Clive as a playable character for the game. It doesn't do much but it's a very cool little addition, which made my me surprised and happy when I got to see it unexpectedly. Either way, keep up the great work and have a lovely day.

In the Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky Trilogy. You can transfer your save from each game to the next one gain a variety of bonuses. You start the game with bonus accessories depending on how much you did in the previous game, you can transfer your levels, and also NPC dialogue changes depending on if you did a quest for them or not (and I mean A LOT of dialogue. I'm sure localization had fun with it). This applies to basically all the games in this series and it's always really cool.

I think the data transfer is such a nice feature. I remember getting some bonuses in P5 Royal from my P5 save data and the Professor Layton games had bonus puzzles locked behind codes one would find in the other games. Very happy you covered this topic, keep it floppy, man!

Literally the legend of heroes franchise. Every sotry arc is split in multiple games, but if you have a save from a previous game it remembers every choice you made during sidequest or story events and some dialogue with NPCs will be different based on what you did in those games. It's not just a bonus in items, it's a bonus in acknowledgement of your commitment and adding extra flavor to immerse you into the story. Also yes gameplay gets rewarded too, carrying a save file from the previous game in the arc starts you off a bit higher leveled and with extra items to start you off. Trails Into Reverie, the 10th game in the series is a game that gives closure to the Crossbell and Cold Steel games so it gives you bonuses for having save files for both the final crossbell and the final cold steel game separately. Can have one or the other or both! I'm glad to have them all united on Steam!

Back on the PS2 the Ratchet & Clank games had a rad share-save system. In R&C 2, the game has an old store that sells weapons from the first game, but if the memory card has a gamesave of that with those weapons already unlocked, the second game gives you those tools for *free*. R&C 3 did this again for R&C 2, and it felt AMAZING.

I remember some Nickelodeon games having a Cross-Save feature where you get special bonuses by having save data on two or more of the featured games. They include Nicktoons Unite, Spongebob: Lights, Camera, Pants!, Barnyard the Video Game and Tak: The Great Juju Challenge.

Someone probably already said this but technically you can transfer Pokemon all the way from every Pokemon game but it requires you to own the digital copies of red blue gold and silver, the now impossible to download Pokemon bank and then you need all the hardware to run the games to transfer them to Pokemon home :)

a really fun one i remember is in the first ratchet and clank game, theres a cutscene where ratchet, who has floppy ears, becomes an employee of gadgetron, and he asks the gadgetron guy if that means he can have a discount on gadgets. the gadgetron guy tells him that he needs to be with the compony for 2 years before that discount kicks in. then, 2 real life years later when ratchet and clank 3 released, if you have save data from ratchet 1, you actually do get that discount. its only a really small discount and doesnt actually affect the game much at all, but as a kid that continuity blew my mind.

Breath of the wild into Tears of the kingdom was my favorite recent example, it was such a fun little surprise, but i also really liked the bonus unlock on Metroid Prime when you connected Fusion with the link cable. It let you use the fusion suit in 3D, and play the original Metroid, which was novel in the era before virtual console.

I'm still playing through Trails in the Sky SC so Idk if other Trails games do this, but if you play the first Trails in the Sky then Sky SC will transfer your data over and you'll start the game with the same level (not same weapons, gear or money, sadly) and if you did any side quests then some of the NPCs in Sky SC will have different dialogue accordingly, which is pretty neat.

In The Total War:Warhamer series you can FUSE THE GAMES TOGETHER to make a super game with a map that has all the areas and factions in the series on it. which say what you will about those game monetary ethics I have never seen a game series you can fuse together like that. Wait no Sonic 3 and Knuckles you can do that as well still rare though.

One you might not know about, is the original ratchet and clank trilogy on the ps2:- in ratchet and clank 1 you eventually become an employee and high ranking customer of gadgetron, the weapon vendor after doing a hoverboard commercial for them, and as a reward for having a complete save file of ratchet and clank 1, in ratchet and clank 2 there's a character who let's you buy old gadgetron weapons, and will give you all of them for free if you have the save data. In ratchet and clank 3, this trend continues- gadgetron returns to being the main weapon vendor, and thus having a ratchet and clank 1 savefile grants you a permanent employee discount on all weapons. Additionally, having ratchet and clank 2 save data allows you to get a selection of weapons from the second game for free

Suikoden -> Suikoden II was always a big one for me. Each game has about 70 playable characters, and if you have a completed save from the first, two of the returning characters join you with top-tier armor, and late in the game you can recruit the protagonist from the first game. Characters from the first game will also appear at higher level and with better weapons based on how high level they were in at the end of the first game. They don't get all their levels but, for example, when one of the first game's main heroes would normally join you at level 20, he can be level 33 if he was maxed out in the first game.

Shout out to the Ai: The Somnium Files games for their interesting version of this. The two game's plots are completely separate, but if you correctly answer the Sequels questions about the events of the first game some dialouge will change to reference events that happened in it. It changes nothing about the plot and you can very easily just play the sequel without losing anything, but the cute references and acknowledgment are fun.

I would count games where the a story expansion on a later release on the same game gives you bonuses like in xenoblade 1 and 3 dlc, where you can use Shulk's and Melia's future connected outfit in the base game and unlock Shulk and Rex in the Xenoblade 3 base game (no additional quest sadly)

From de Omega ruby and Alfa saphire demo, you get glalie's mega stone. Not sure if you can get it in the game without transfering it, but it was pretty cool since you get to mess around with the M latios/M latias souped up fly in the demo (Thing you unlock pretty late in the actual game)

Small as it may be, I actually really like getting the phone cases referencing other games in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet. Mostly because you can get the Arc Phone from Legends Arceus again, both a game I love, and kind of funny to think about in-universe. "Oh, you have a one-of-a-kind phone case referencing the bond between you and your partner? That's cute. My phone literally has GOD on speed-dial. Get on my level."

One example I always remember is Suikoden tactics. There were 2 hidden characters you could only get if you did a full 100% max stars play through of Suikoden 4 and transfer over the save. I believe the true ending of the game relies on getting all characters so this does lock off content if you never played the other game (which is a standard rpg and not a tactics game).

In dragonball xenoverse 2 the character you created in the first game shows up multiple times and there is a big statue of them in the game hub since they saved that area in the 1st game.

xenosaga trilogy on PS2 can read your save data in which you finished the story 100% in episode 2, you get kos-mos & ziggy,outfits for finishing episode 1 & having clear data from that game and for completing Xenosaga 2 you get shion's vector attire in xenosaga 3

Largos bonuses go to calill! 2:22 (takes the highest from each party, ie if largo got 2 strength, she'd take it, while also getting her caps etc, but they don't stack). never forget the madpeople in VGC (Pokemon doubles) that brought the 60 usd g-max pikachu you could only get at the time from owning Lets Go Pikachu and they did really well.

I actually just (re)played the Oracles games in preparation for Tears of the Kingdom, as well as have talked to a few friends about Tomba! and its sequel (Tomba! 2) and how if you play through the original you'll have some extra quests in the sequel which gives you a completely useless change in the post-game cutscene if you 100% the quests including the bonus ones. But yeah it's pretty much always sick when game devs can connect games in that way. Even if sometimes it's a bit floppy.

Floppy. Suikoden 1 & 2 had some of my fave old save bonuses. Not only would charters come over if you beat the first game at near full weapon level as they were in their game but also higher level and the old main character 'could' be found later in the game as well with your name (tho a glitch made it slightly wrong). What more if you old saved bonoused the game, the final spell of your main characters rune could be unlocked without needing to get every character. Not that you wouldn't get every character, but having a spell that heals 2000 across everyone then anything it don't heal slammed into your opponent is nice to have early.

Super Lesbian Animal RPG may not do anything super special with its saving system, but I love that Melody and Allison's heart crest in the Amber Woods is right next to the save station. I think a neat little book is a much better visual representation than a floppy disk or something.
