I actually really like the train segment of Color Splash. It's a multi-level mission to escort this train to get repaired (which you thankfully don't have to finance), help the passengers off at their next stop, and then take it back after it gets hijacked. There's a lot of great moments, like how, if you go to the passenger car while fixing up the train, you get into a battle where all of the passengers yell at you. Shoutout to that one Toad whose wife left him.

Great video as always, but I can’t believe there was no mention of trains in logistics games! Factorio, TTD, satisfactory, all have great uses of trains that serve as both puzzle solving and moving things from one place to another efficiently and also give me headaches when I try to design junctions. They often lead to a benefit in your finances.
@AnotherDuck Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a partially train-focused genre, so missing that is a blunder. It's not just the fan myopic, "You missed my favourite game!" but missing an entire genre. The Sim City part is similar, but not it. (Open)TTD, Simutrans, Railroad Tycoon, Rollercoaster Tycoon, etc. are all games worthy of mention. Factorio and Satisfactory are less focused on it, but it's still a major part of gameplay.
@zacharynovak2180 Жыл бұрын
@@AnotherDuck I’d say trains are a MAJOR part of factorio unless you’re playing with specific settings. The game is designed so that trains are the most efficient long haul transportation system by far. And since resources spawn farther and farther out, you basically need to use them. I agree with that on Satisfactory though.
@AnotherDuck Жыл бұрын

Also one thing I love about Spirit Tracks? It's not that the music is in time with the train sounds, but rather the other way around - the train chugs in time with the music, and depending on your current speed, it'll do so in different ways! finance

One thing I'll mention about the Mario Kart segment is that on tracks like Toad Harbor and Super Bell Subway, the trains can be a simple but very effective way of providing a cycle based obstacle that can change your lines and driving tech depending on when you reach a certain section, making actual races even more dynamic and adding some much needed variety to time trial runs.

My favourite instances of trains in videogames: Pokémon BW/B2W2, Battle Subway: You do Pokémon battles ON TRAINS Dragon Quest 9- You fix up a flying train called The Starflight Express and she fly from the Observatory to the Realm of the Almighty. You eventually talk to her owner, Fygg, and get to control her freely. Dragon Quest Treasures: Erik and Mia come across an sky island and meet Mr Euston, a train conductor who wants to restore his train stations. You both decide to help him and he les you use his building as a base so you can become a treasure gang. You use thr train to transport to and from areas, you spend a lot of the game restoring the train stations, and you use the trains to get your second party to go on trips for items. Go Vacation, Mountain Resort- There is a train that goes all the way around the resort, which can be ridden on amd you can look at the scenery outside. There is a mission where you need to walk around the entire track without derailing (haha). You can bypass walking by tricking on top of the train or even jumping on top of the train with your horse, yes, a horse.

The thing i'm missing in this video is trains as a base. A well designed train base can combine utility and comfort really well, like for example the train in metro exodus. You dont have a stationary base, so the train needs to step in as one. The same goes for the train in choo choo charles, its the only place of comfort, and driving away from a dangerous encounter in any game feels like a head first dive into a safe space.

I see that you have failed to mention another game that was primarily train focused. Metro Exodus. Not only does it have a name of a train in the game title itself, but the main focus has involved a train. It is called the Aurora, an articulated steam locomotive and that is the main base of operations throughout the game. This can take up a lot of the categories you have in this video, "train v. train combat, train as comfort, train as transportation, train as dynamic, train as movement, and train as being cool" It is so involved in the game that it almost feels like another main character along the journey throughout the game, that is how involved it is. It has been rumored that the next Metro game will start out on the Aurora as well since it has been said that the player will wake up in their main base of operations. And that feels like the train to me. I quite enjoyed this video regardless. When it comes to games, I treat trains essentially as Steel Dragons because they not only also breathe fire and put out the heat, but they are a rarer occurrence in the mainstream gaming world but are slowly "picking up steam" and becoming more and more utilized in games just like dragons themselves which I also love in games, as well as dinosaurs but that is a story for another day.

Finance! Mr spaceman, if you listen to the Shin Megami Tensei V soundtrack a lot of the tracks for post-apocalyptic Tokyo feature a subtle railway crossing / train whistle motif that I think fits your idea of train as order / absence of train as chaos thesis. I figure it's also meant to be a sort of symbol of inevitability as the train always goes to the same place (in an ideal reality) and is probably a reassuring background thing for Japanese people that seems unsettling when it's gone like how post-apocalyptic American games always have empty highways. Anyway, videos like this are the reason why I follow you so thanks as always.

Metro Exodus also prominently features a train, called the Aurora. Functionally, it's a safe zone where you can chat with various members of your (and to swap out, modify and maintain your various equipment). But it's also the beating heart of the story. You see it expand throughout the course of the game. It was only the locomotive at first, but then you get a passenger car, a small trolley for scouting, a fuel car, etc,...Bit by bit, the train becomes your home, an oasis in the desert, a symbol of hope in a desolate wasteland even though the train itself is so cramped you barely have room to navigate (which i think really adds to immersion). There's so much more to this, the Aurora is its own character honestly.

One of my favourite games, Kya: Dark Lineage, has a pretty awesome way of utilizing a train/cargo monorail for platforming, mixed with an earlier platforming element. You see, there's parts in Kya where you can jump on the back of a vaguely raptor-ish creature called a Jamgut. There's two varieties, one that has the power to jump good, and one that can run very fast. If you press and hold a certain button, Kya will stand on the back of the Jamgut, which can be done either when it's standing still or when it's already running. When already running, the Jamgut will keep on running in a straight line. And if you jump onto a platform that moves *parallel* to the Jamgut, the Jamgut keeps pace with you! You can see where this is going. Initially, this mechanic is introduced in a very simple way, with only a moving crate on a monorail that you have to jump onto from the Jamgut's back as it is running, to then open the gate from the other side and retrieve the guy. Later on, in the Quarry level, this gets upped with the Royal Jamgut variant (the one that runs well) , a monorail train, and a big grinder device that chases you. So you have to keep pace with the train and stay ahead of the grinder vehicle, while dodging certain obstacles at some points. And when you get to the train, you have to open up the backmost cart by hitting a target with the boomerang weapon, jump onto the cart, clear out the enemies within and stand on a button that opens up the next cart. And then you jump back onto the Jamgut to run ahead to said next cart, clear out the enemies and unlock the cart after that, and that's done two or so times-- culminating in taking control of the driver's cabin to get to the next area. Kya's not perfect, but in terms of platforming challenges and... setpieces, i guess, that part has stuck out to me the most to this day.

The 3DS games Yo-kai Watch 2 and 3 feature pretty involved train stuff in them, more so in YKW2 than 3 but it's still there, the trains serve mainly as a way to get to areas outside of the city the games take place in mainly a small village in the country and a small fishing town but there's also a lot of largely superfluous stations with basically nothing in them, at least in YKW2 there were stamps at each station where once you got all of them you'd unlock the infinite use train pass as opposed to having to buy a new daily pass, however because Yo-kai Watch has a RNG addiction like no other there's a ton of random events that can happen on the train from battling random yo-kai, getting items or finding rare train-exclusive yo-kai that can't be found elsewhere, the 3rd version of Yo-kai Watch 2 named Psychic Spectres has even more train stuff that the first 2 versions.

JUMPS UP AND DOWN im gonna be annoying !!!! Time to finance some train lore. A few of my favorite trains for yall to ponder: Prior to persona 5, smt devil survivor 2 also has a destructive subway that kinda reveals the world going to bad in the early game :D also the train crushes you to death if you tell the demons to let you die lol There's also some train puzzles in Professor Layton: Diabolical Box... and well a cool mysterious train ! Also, and my favorite, in mario party 8.... one of the boards is a train 🙈 shy guy's express, now that is gaming

I would like to add another purpose of the train (or more its station). The train as a central point of operation. My example for this is Steam World Build, a mix between city builder and dungeon keeper. There the train station is your central and starting point. Every building requires a connection to the station in order to function, repairing the train station is the final need of your tier 1 citizens and the train serves as your method of resource trade.
