The chinese PVZ2 is not just unpolished, most of the plants have virtually no use or are outclassed by every other plant. The ENT plant(i think it's the name) is able to hold 7-8 zombies without being eaten, basically outclassinf almost every defense plant in the game. Did I mention it does damage too?

Something to clarify: The Chinese version of Pvz2 1.0 version was released in Android because someone manage to port de iOS version. So Popcap decided to make PopCap Shanghai to manage the game in China. Then adding custom content like its leveling system. About that, that leveling system came up first in some of the first versions of the game (and started screwing with the audio so you can only hear a part of Ancient Egypt final wave). Before 1.8.0., the game used the old map system of Pvz2 (the one which used the star gates and star/key collecting system) (idk why but they manage to break the main code so you don't have limits to see around the map, reaching a point so you go beyond it). In the 1.8.0 the game changed forever. The map system changed to the lineal one, but the star system stayed.

Unrelated topic here. _Journey to the West_ is actually the most, if not 2nd most, well-known Chinese fiction in the history. There's like at least one movie adaption of it every year. Nowadays everything that gets added to the chinese PVZ2 is unbalanced, unfinished, or in some cases both. Like, look at the "chinese content overanalyzed" series by Flag Zombie and you'll see that every plant is unfinished in some way. Several zombies and plants can break the game off of simple interactions the devs werent expecting (for example hypnotizing any exclusive zombie) Hell, some of the exclusive plants (Icy Currant or the Rotten Red) give me the impression that a lot of the content that is added to that version is scrapped concept art or even cancelled prototypes made for the international version that they tried to put together using whatever programming skills they have. A small correction to the leveling section: It's not a rework of the international version, it came BEFORE it. And it's also 10x grindier and unbalanced; every level gives the plant 50% increased damage and then the level 4 essentially makes the plant boosted, because it allows it to have its plant food effect when you plant it. From what i hear leveling up a plant is also an absolute nightmare, especially if you want to get it up to level 5. And finally, you see those returning plants like Cattail, Cob Cannon or Gatling Pea? Yeah, from what i've heard the only way to get them is by spinning a roulette. And the roulette only gives you puzzle pieces for the plant, you need to win it several times. And spinning the roulette costs 100 gems. And there is a low chance of even getting it and not some other garbage.

Here's someone who played pvz online over the span of 2 years I still have incredibly fond memories of that game, it was way more fun than any other pvz game I've ever played. Every mode was fun, many different plants, mechanics and unique gimmicks to maps and zombies. And the turn based was a lot of fun despite what it looked like in the footage. Setting up your team correctly with the correct placement, making each zombie and plant target certain targets deliberately and to have the ultimates go off at the correct time. Especially when analyzing fights in order to come up with better strategies for certain stages, it made my younger self really feel like a strategist (sadly it usually turned into a slaughter with the same few plants cuz they were just the strongest of all i owned. I believe it was due to leveling that they were just better than anything else i had. And collecting plants for synergy was incredibly difficult) Leveling system, garden, visible health bars for both zombies and plants make this game stand out to me as well as the competition with other players. Garden, shops, pets, many different gameplay options made this game never go stale for me. I was heartbroken when one day i couldn't find the game anymore and only today did i learn that it was discontinued... The memory of it has long become hazy but it still pains me to never be able to play it again in order to experience the joy i did as a child

Although I've not read the novel(it's monstrously long with about 100 chapters), I've heard stories of it from my parents as bedtime stories when I was small. So I've recognized some jttw characters used as references in Pvz jttw edition. 7:57, plant on the left is a reference to Nezha, the third lotus prince, a deity in Chinese mythology. He not only appears in jttw but also other ancient Chinese literature. Plant in the right is probably a reference to Zhu Bajie. Zhu Bajie looks half human and half pig. He is one of the main characters in jttw. He is the disciple of Tang Sanzang(who is referenced at around 7:27). Red boy imp(8:51) is a reference to red boy(obviously). He is a demon with fire based powers(not just normal fire but inextinguishable ones so really powerful). His parents are also prominent figures in the jttw novel, there's a wiki about them too so I'm not gonna delve too deep into them. Skelton demon zombie(8:56) is a reference to Baigujing. She had a desire to eat the flesh of Tang Sanzang(which happens a lot with the demons in the novel). She has the ability to disguise herself as humans to deceive the protagonists. Her true form is usually depicted as a skeleton. I recommend reading the wiki of these characters if you want to know more about them(and fact check my comment). The novel is also pretty neat from what I've heard. I've been wanting to read it but I've been pretty busy to find time for it. There's plenty of adaptations of the novel, films, cartoons, comics. I've seen some, they're also neat. I may do an update if I find anymore references in this vid and sorry if I got anything wrong. Edit: so the plant at 26:08 is most definitely a reference to Sun Wukong(also known as Monkey King). One of the main protagonists of jttw. The bar it throws at zombies is a reference to his weapon, a staff. Kinda wacky they just straight up used a monkey head, slapped some kiwi slices on it and called it a day. Yet it's oddly charming for me and I don't know why.

I'm seeing comments mentioning most of these were broken as all hel, but honestly, the first 3 kinda blew my socks off. As an og pvz fan even now I'm really into all the features and add ons they had, so i would've definitely made a crazy Dave in my pantaloons if i found about them back then.

Aside from beeing really buggy the chinese edition of pvz2 has much more fun and interesting features in my opinion. Its so much better than playing the same arena level for a week for a chance to get a plant thats incredibly situationary at a point of beeing useless or a plant thats just straight up op to a point of beeing not fun to use.

in PVZ Online the turn based mode was required for the regular mode, you had to get stars to unlock worlds (iirc, i finished it all before they added the water world), also the town was just a glorified menu, there was a bunch of different advertisement style things you could click on (for things to purchase), and you also had to unlock certain houses the more you played, also despite how barren it looks compared to PVZ2, PVZOL was relatively popular because its the only form of PVZ2 natively playable on PC

There's a mod out there that expends on the original game by adding two new worlds, Moon(inspired by the Zomboss boss background and the chinesse mods that adds this new world) and Campsite (who's visuals are kinda inspired by PVZ Adventures, the now long deceased Facebook game.) It also reintroduced Brave Dave under a new name, as well as many of the social edition plants like Ice Fume-Shroom, the Super Chomper and many more with quality sprites and animations. They are either obtainable via the store via in-game currency or unlockable trought gameplay. There's even a few PVZ adventures plants like Beeshooter. (Yup, thoses existed.)

Not only China PVZ have a big franchise for the game itself, but they even made PVZ chinese comic books from PVZ 1 to PVZ heroes, their more on education purpose too. There is also a english, malay and tamil version for it but they could only be sold in malaysia and singapore(where I live).
