Pretty sure the parents didn't like it since it could teach their kids that abuse leads to bad behavior. Which could make some kids realize that their parents are abusive. Furbies are a weird thing for me, because I definitely had one as a child, but not because I *wanted* one. It was a gift and it was neat for like a month and then relegated to the back of my closet. I'm glad my fandom drama post was a helpful tool for this video, too. How strange it is to see such old posts of mine again! Love the video but as a furby customiser myself it is a bit of a shame most of the customs in the video are posted without credit which is a little disheartening since people reposting images of what is a form of art without credit is one of the most frustrating things that happens because people don’t tend to consider the amount of work that goes into them! Also I feel like you’re missing a huge part of the fandom! After the tumblr fandom died down a little 2018-2021 saw a huge fandom boom on Instagram! The Furby fandom was huge on Insta and had a lot of drama and trends etc. there was a lot of development especially for the customisation side of the fandom!💖 but I do get that it’s harder to research fandom history on Insta than tumblr!

you are completely right, and i am so sorry. i sadly lost track of a lot of image credits, but i'll add a pinned comment with credits from my notes and as i collect them via comments! also thanks for pointing out the insta fandom! all the accounts i followed were either more oddbody focused or stopped posting. i focused a bit too much on tumblr, but i'll check out the rest of the community!

@@plushiepath thank you so much for your response! As I said it’s honestly pretty impossible to track timelines of trends on Insta so I totally get why it wasn’t really talked about 💖 thank you for your understanding with the credit! It’s nice to a see a creator understand where we’re coming from since most people don’t really bother or care. :] 💖

Furbies were a cool part of my children’s childhoods. My oldest, 21 now, had two. My twins, 13 now, had two as well. By the time my twins got them, you could feed them and care for them using an iPad. Loved that feature. The first re-released Furby my oldest got, glitched out and turned mean. It was some sort of common problem, apparently. We sent them a form, and customer service helped us send his back, and he got a new one. Done through ToysRUs at the time. I just remember how the guy treated my child, who was maybe 6 at the time. He spoke mostly to him over the phone. My son, who was very mature always, just loved that and never forgot that interaction. My nephews will be getting my twins’ old ones for their birthdays soon. We believe ever child should have a Furby. Sorry for running on….this brought back good things for me. 😌

Those audio clips you played of a 2005 furby glitching just re-traumatized me hahaha. I woke up multiple nights to those sounds and to the "I can see you" and "feed me!" and a high pitched "WAAAAA" (like a baby crying.) I ended up begging my mom to let me keep it on the couch at night instead of my room. She said no and just thought I was playing with it in bed when I wasn't supposed to, so I buried it in the bottom of my toybox. Next time I looked for it, it was gone. I've never seen it again. To this day my mom says she doesn't know what happened, but I think she got spooked and got rid of it when I was at school one day

If furbies come back I want to see an emphasis on the animal cuteness and less on the electronic dullness.

Today I bought a 50 quid furby out of a charity shop. It’s a 2005 grey one that’s a bit scruffy and the beak’s a little worn, but the battery spring things are completely corroded (someone clearly left a battery in there, it’s battery acid corrosion) and I suspect it’s made it’s way into the circuitry. He probably won’t ever work (I’ll still try to restore him at some point) but I love him nonetheless. Best purchase I’ve ever made and I named him Pedro :)

My grandmother got all the grandkids (me, my brother, and my 2 cousins) furbies for Christmas the year they debuted and was so proud of herself for having bought them before stores were sold out. I don’t think any of us had even heard of them but rather enjoyed it. This video was so fun and made me long for a furby friend ❤
@Siahnette2 жыл бұрын
My parents were extremely against any battery operated toy when I was a child (game boy included sadly) and I was SO stoked when I got a Furby on Christmas Day. Little did I know that the poor thing would be banned from the house and had to stay permanently at my grandparents' place, they hated it so much 😆 Also anyone else remembers having to lock it inside a cupboard to finally get it to shut up, only to be greated by a joyous "C'est la fête!" ("Party time", yeah french girl over here) when you randomly open the door again ?
@plushiepath2 жыл бұрын
OH NO. i am so sorry. i wish they'd let you keep it at home. (but it's cool that your grandpa gave it a new home!) my mum was paranoid about batteries leaking so she never allowed me to put my furby on my bed or near food. mine was stashed away in the living room at night so it wouldn't wake anyone up haha but i've heard a lot of people say that their furbies were dorment up until they opened their closets/cupboards months later!

I had no clue there was a whole furby community 💞 furdsonas sound so cool... But naturally, when there is something bright, colorful and wholesome, people try to ruin it or make it look bad cuz it's different... I say that no matter what you're going through, you have a right to express and vent that in your own way💞
@plushiepath Жыл бұрын
couldn’t agree more. i wish people wouldn’t judge others for expressing themselves 🥲 as long as you’re not hurting anyone and happy, you should be able to do whatever you want! fursuits are honestly so fascinating and super intricate.

I remember my little sister had furbies, there was one that she wasn't fond of though and ended up giving him to me. He was weird, an official product but looked more like a knock off. He was like a furbling in size, maybe a little bigger, but he had a beak like a duck and wings instead of ears. I think they were called "rocker furbies" or something. Anyway I named him Way-Tah and drew him a lot and would make him sing along to Call Me Maybe

The community labeling certain Furby glitches or malfuctions as disabilites or chronic illnesses such as MSA and blindness is really interesting to me - I imagine a not insignificant portion of the Furby community have disabilites and chronic illnesses similar to some Furby malfunctions, and maybe having a Furby that has one of those traits and showing it love and care helps those struggling, and helps them realize that they themselves are deserving of care and love.

The most ironic thing about this whole video is that most of the furby drama had something to do with Discord in it. Typical Discord tbh. Besides that I love this video, it shows the positives and negatives of the fandom even though in my POV the fandom has definitely healed from the drama and I don't see any popping up recently!

This was an awesome video summary of a bigger topic than I would have thought! When you mentioned the furby with the rubber mouth, I realized, "Hey, I think I still have one of those!" and went to dig in the old cardboard boxes in my closet to go find her. Within the timespan of the rest of the video, I found her, one of those little plastic ones from Burger King, and a furby that looks more like the originals with a trademark year of 1999 on it. I remembered the kids meal toy one already, but I'd totally forgotten I have two robotic ones! Now I'm tempted to clean them up and see what I can do with them. ^u^ I mean, I'm a little scared to fully mod them or anything, but a not-deteriorated mouth for the one would be nice. lol

Great video! I came in having little knowledge of furbies or any kind of fandom. And I left entertained and informed. It's always fun to see someone talk with that much passion for a subject. Btw, before this I had mostly heard of current furby trends by Matt Rose, a guy who does voiceovers and because of his furby horror story readings also various extents of ehm... modifications (he made a long furby. But he also made furby risotto once. It was a fan's request).

I used to have two furbies at my grandma's house. I would feed them, pet them, talk to them and tickle them. I think one of them died or broke while the other one's batteries died. The second furby also woke up in the middle of the night complaining about the dark and then it never spoke again afaik. tbh I miss the old furbies. I think "sentient toys" or "toy pets" are very interesting and cool. I love when electronics have personalities attached.
