Hello Helen, lovely video, thank you for sharing your goodies! ❤ Regarding the Brusho pigments: I would like to add my vote to those here that recommended to please keep the caps on, pierce them with thumbtacks and leave them on. When you wish to work with them, take the tack off, gently sprinkle on the paper and replace the tack in the cap. Otherwise your entire world would become an instant rainbow!! 😂 Of course, they can be dissolved in water in separate ceramic wells, using less or more pigment for a less or more intense color, just like regular watercolors- which they are. Long time ago, I experimented with them, by making ‘acrylic skins’: over a sheet of palette paper, or any sturdy plastic, I poured acrylic matte medium (or gloss) and while wet, I sprinkled Brusho pigments over it and manipulated the pigments to my desire. After letting it completely dry, I peeled it off the plastic paper and voilá, acrylic skins at the ready, to be cut and used as collage elements, or whatever. This way, those pigments will not reactivate and will stay put incased in that ‘acrylic skin’. Cheers!

Wow, that sounds amazing and I would have never thought of that. I have Ken Oliver's Color Bursts which are I believe very similar. Wondering if it would work with that. Would you happen to be abel to recommend any video of how exactly to do this technique? Or maybe Helen would be fantastic enough to try that out and show us?

@@KialayaKreations hi there! I have no idea if Helen would be willing/able to help with that. But YT is full of videos about how to make acrylic skins, none that I know of using Brusho’s or similar powders, though. You just have to be brave and experiment with gels, mediums and your KO Bursts (which I don’t have, but I think they will work the same as Brusho). Good luck and have tons of fun experimenting!

Hi Helen! So great to see this video. I’ve resisted buying the King Art gel sticks but I’d be interested in how you like the Ranger Distress crayons. I loved the Rosa Gallery paints you bought - especially the grey one. The granulation is just gorgeous. And I loved the painting you did with them. When you opened the Brusho, I was just shocked at the color - not what I was expecting. I’m not sure it’s a product I will explore although it’s fun to watch. Like you, I was thinking it was powdered color that was well, the color you expect. I like that Bower Bird palette. I like that the palette has 3 mixing wells. Those glass peanuts were too cute and funny. I look forward to seeing what you put in it. Those books by Katie Daisy are so charming - great inspiration. I might need to order one - I haven’t wanted to make any art for a while which is not typical for me. The leaf dies are really beautiful! I don’t have a die cutter but I loved seeing you use yours. Those cutouts will make some lovely cards. You can also use them as masks for Gel printing! I also loved seeing the other things you had in the haul. It’s always so good to see one of your videos. 😊❤

Hello Terri!! I think I'm going to like the Distress Crayons, because they have all the advantages of KingArt gel sticks, but with a more muted colour palette, plus they dry more over time. I'll definitely do more videos on them anyway. The Rosa Gallery granulating paints are definitely real stars in my opinion! I probably won't get more Brushos, but they're definitely a bit of fun. I'm so sorry you're not feeling the art at the moment!! I hope it flows back to you when the time is right. Brilliant idea for using the die cuts for masks - thank you!!!

Yummy as usual! My Brushos are about 12 years old, first thing I learned when I got it was to punch a needle whole on the lid and leave it. Nice to have a die cut, the leaves came out beautiful. Have a wonderful weekend! 💞

Hi Helen, brilliant video as always! When I use my Brusho collection, I paint an image with water on paper and then just sprinkle the powder on it, you get the colour just on the wet areas. You can also just sprinkle several colours on areas that a completely wet page and then when it is dry you can draw around shapes that you can see within the page. They’re fun when you experiment with them. Thankyou for sharing, take care ❤❤

Cute and/or so pretty gets us every time. That Bower Bird palette is so both. I do believe the glass peanuts are brush rests. I'm guessing peanuts because that's the food of choice for feeding my wild birds. In shell or out, they devour them first before touching anything else. I'm trying to stay strong on not falling for the palette but I do love it. And now I have put the two Katie Daisy books in my Amazon cart. They look wonderful for quick inspiration. I love the whimsy in them and the quotes. I also have several of the Brusho powders. I was cringing when you opened it and then poured the powder. The powder can go everywhere! They are unique but are fun to play with. Not as brave as you, I put a whole in the cap and keep a thumb tack in it. I also punched out sticky back circles and put the colors and color names on them and placed them on the lid so I can tell the colors and not have to pick up each one looking for specific colors. (so I don't chance dropping any of them) Lifting the powder out of the container with a dry brush and then tapping the brush above the water works pretty good but I do prefer tapping thru the whole in the lid as the dye powder is so powerfully colorful. And whatever you do, don't sneeze on dry powder. 🤧

That makes more sense with the peanuts! My friend trains wild crows with peanuts actually - she has great fun with them while out walking her dogs! Yes, that's exactly it with those books! Haha - best advice ever: Don't Sneeze! 😂

Michele Webber has a video on Brusho, I bought a set for a course & Michele told us to be careful with it as on using it it can spread everywhere, not only on paper but also down to your underwear/ skin, I got it over many sheets on a watercolour block. Then put a pin in the lid to try & control it! Hope you have more luck with it. So enjoy the books you recommend too. Thanks.

So far no other company has the quality and depth of color as those Gelatos but We R Makers Pigment Pens have some more subtle colors. And I'll still recommend the Kwik Stix 14 Global Skin Tones set. If nothing else, they've got some lovely browns, beiges and taupes for landscapes. Those paint powders are wild. Beautiful colors but I actually like them when they first hit the water. Very out there and unique. Sometimes it boggles the mind with what's out there and possible. Almost overwhelming.

That powered green paint is perfect for making sprinkles on an ice cream. That's what the swatch looked like to me. 🍦 I prefer the uniball pens to fineliners too mainly because the tips hold up better over really rough surfaces. I buy the uniball eyes because the airs only seem to come in a 0.7 in Hobbyland vs the eye in 1.0, 0.7, 0.5, and 0.38 plus they come in different color inks. It's $14.90 NZD for a pack of 4. That pretty Bower Bird tin was the one I bought for my daughter's floral palette that we made up recently. I also bought their floral patterned long narrow 24 pan tin to use as my desk palette in place of my wider black 48 pan tin. The 48 pan one is now my storage tin as it's quite a space hog and I seem to be collecting paints. You're a bad influence on me 😂 I don't know of David Mankin so haven't seen his work before but those paintings all seem to have a feel of the sea and boats to me. Seagulls squawking, crashing waves and the sound of sails flapping in the breeze as you come about. I can almost taste the ocean. Very nice, I'll be following him on Instagram.

The Brusho is dye-based, so definitely not lightfast, in case anyone is wondering. I was perusing the own-brand watercolour section of the Jackson’s website the other day, though, and I was quite excited and intrigued to find a product called something like “watercolour crystals” or “pigment crystals” or something that IS lightfast and seems to be a product somewhat similar to Brushos. I haven’t come across it nor seen it mentioned previously, so I’m really curious about it. Sadly lacking in funds currently, though, so I won’t be trying it any time soon - I’d love to know if anyone else has … oh, and in case anyone is interested, the Distress Crayons are not lightfast either - but are really nice to use, in my opinion!
@helencryer
@helencryer Ай бұрын
Yes, thank you. I've been looking into this. The company themselves say they are as Lightfast as other watercolour mediums and that they have paintings on their site, over 30 years old that haven't faded, but don't say under what conditions. I've seen independent testers show fading in window tests though. I won't be trusting them on anything I sell, except for maybe on some greetings cards. I'll take a look at the ones on Jackson's! Yes, I don't trust any of these craft sticks (gel sticks, tempera paint sticks, Gelatos etc) to be lightfast. Purely for mixed media sketchbook fun, or again, greetings cards.

I bought the Shuttle Art Pastel tempera stick set of 24. They are gorgeous and really creamy. But the moment they hit the paper, they're dry...so virtually no blending...glazing or layering works pretty well, but no blending. I guess some sort of solvent would do the trick, but I didn't want to bother w/that. Tempera sticks were first developed and still marketed more for kids to dry quickly so they don't drip and create big messes. They don't nudge, that's for sure.
@helencryer
@helencryer Ай бұрын
Yes, I demonstrated this difference in my recent gel/paint stick comparison video - I think that's why I'll like the Distress Crayons - blendable at the beginning but with the advantage of having them dry out over a longer time period. You can blend the Tempera Sticks with water though (a lot at first, and to a lesser extent after they dry), but no solvent needed.

After an initial Temu art haul when I didn't know much about them, I've avoided them for over a year, but I've realised that so many other shops and online shops like Amazon are selling the exact same products, just more expensively, and it's a minefield figuring it all out. Jackson's Art for example are now selling Baohong paper, which is exactly the same as Temu sells. I think Potentate papers are along the same lines. I noticed that the Ranger Tim Holtz products I used in this video are made in China too. I hear you though, and I think it's probably a case of weaning ourselves off all Chinese goods.

Coast guard alert Helen? Do you work for the Rnli? How exciting!
@helencryer
@helencryer Ай бұрын
I cut out the bit of the video where my phone alert went off loudly mid video and made me jump a mile! The RNLI is actually separate from the Coastguard. The Coastguard control room gets 999 calls put through to them, and then they can mobilise either an RNLI boat team, or a Coastguard rescue team (or both). My Coastguard team specialises in technical rope rescues (lots of very high cliffs around here), Lost & Missing Persons searches and a few other things. It's pretty varied and I love it!

Before you create fine art, please know the Distress line of products are all dye based (no pigment) and are designed for crafting - card making, scrapbooking, etc. They fade terribly in light - not in years, in weeks - because they are dye. They are enjoyable to use but are not considered a fine art medium.

Thank you, yes! The Distress Crayons video will be a follow-on from the Gel Sticks/Tempera Paint sticks video I did, where this was (and will be) clearly pointed out. My emphasis on all these products are that they're for fun mixed media, sketchbook stuff only.

I wouldn't join the group at first because I thought the name was too rude, but I succumbed because they are the most wonderful, supportive, lively, fun group of women!

How can Paul Reubens afford to give everyone on KZbin free paint and still keep their prices low? Has anyone independently checked the lightfastness? Lovely paints when they are free. Enjoy them.

I assume it's to do with my electric light flickering, though I can't see it on my screens (or in real life).
