A Detailed Look at Patrick Bateman’s Style in ‘American Psycho’ | The Studio

American Psycho is the 2000 recreation of the novel by Bret Easton Ellis. The film takes place in 1987 Manhattan, at the height of the Yuppie era of wall street. For context, the yuppies were a generation of young Americans flocking to the offices of New York city with the main goal of getting rich quickly.
Elements like pinstripes, contrast collar shirts, low-buttoning suits, and expensive timepieces held a major role in US style across the rest of the decade and into the 1990’s and even early 2000’s. In recent years one film character that’s seen rising popularity in popular culture is the main character of Ellis’ novel, Patrick Bateman.
Played by then rising-star Christian Bale in the film version, Bateman is characterized by his drive to fit in. As a result, Bateman has become one of the greatest representations of 1980’s fashion in practically movie history, so let’s take a look at Yuppie fashion in American Psycho.

The watch part is wrong actually. In the movie, Christian Bale actually wears a SEIKO SNXJ90, because Rolex, (the brand of watch he wears in the novel, where the name is mentioned 26 times, a Rolex Datejust 16013 to be specific) contrived to get the brand omitted from the film because they did not wish to be associated or portrayed with such violent media. This also resulted in the dialogue change in the scene with the prostitues, where in the novel he says don't touch the rolex, however in the film he says don't touch the watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/ip6Xq4h-Yr2pldE Otherwise, outstanding video.

Great job on the details, this reminds me of the late 80s to early 90s and Nordstrom sold menswear that epitomized these looks. I wore braces…(they are not called suspenders- those are for socks)…to work nearly every day prior to casual Fridays being popularized. It was a fun time to be a young working professional. Fine dressing is timeless. These looks still have style imo. Thanks for posting this as you did a great job here and is a perfect style guide reference.

Yeah, I watched this movie at a funny point in my life, I've known people like bateman in real life and I can say the character is eerily accurate. But in terms of fashion, I have to admit they really did there research, I know atleast a few of those suits were by Cerruti, I've been lucky enough to snag one off ebay and I have to say their quality is amazing. Armani gets alot of mention in reference to 80s styling but I think cerruti, versace are also really vital. Batemans a detestable person, but his dress style is unmatched, even by his real life counter parts!

They're just staple pieces. Like oliver people glasses that have a similar model. Suits, ties that are similar to the film. Not the exact brands, but similar mindset, like a nice wool suit. instead of a polyester one. Luxury required to be like patrick bateman.
