Great paddling with you. Excellent breakdown of the Fathom.

I paddled this model in a 100 mile race. Time, 13:12:34. Great boat in general. Only design change I would suggest. Is the forward deck doesn't shed water very well. When having to punch through a wave. The boat stalls due to the shape of the deck. It catches the water instead of shedding it.

Thanks for the tip , i will try to watch that when i trim out the boat , as we also hit some extreme waves on the Lake Erie . So far the fathom is super smooth .

Great video..! I replaced the screws with rivets.. It just feels more secure as a locking point on my Skylark.. Stay safe sir.

Could you use the Fathom on stretches of a River, like the Williamette, Colorado, Green etc… ?

Absolutely, many do it. I’ve paddled from Portland to Astoria in one on the Columbia.

Really enjoyed this. How does it compare to sitka? Said another way, why would a paddler choose one of those two over the other?

The Fathom has more speed and firmer tracking than the Sitkas. The Sitka ST fits much smaller than the Fathom, LT is a bit wider than the Fathom and also the cockpit entry is slightly larger. The XT is much larger fit than the Fathom. Around Bend, I have smaller Rivers and lakes so I don’t always need to have a boat like the Fathom but it certainly is enjoyed when I do take it out. Narrower and longer than the Sitkas, it knocks out the miles! For many, it just comes down to the feel and fit. At 6’ 165lbs, the ST is a snug fit for me. The LT is a good relaxed fit w easy entry. The Fathom fits me nicely but not too snug (like ST). A good “all day” fit.

@@HappyPaddlin thanks for these great details. I'm ready to upgrade my rec boat to a performance tourer. My desire is to able to cover significant miles on local lakes and class 1-2 rivers. Day or overnight trips, 2 night max. So many great choices and few opportunities to demo performance boats. Really appreciate what you and Headwaters do with your channels.

Thanks for the support. Always trying to figure out better ways to help the virtual shoppers. There are going to be even less paddling shops over the next few years so we need the meta verse to figure out test paddles!
