Hi guys. I have been a diabetic 70 years since I was 18 mos old. Learning a lot each and every day. I've had shots, insulin pumps and now Inpen. I have a dexcom also. Living with diabetes is not bad. Keep a good attitude. That's the ticket

Wow Matt, that is scary. I have been a type one Diabetic for 36 years. I’m 74 now, and thankful for each new day the Lord wakes me up. Double arrows down with lots of insulin on board is very scary. Bad lows are always hard but when you’re alone it can be very very scary. I have had a few situations through the years. Thankful you were ok. Thanks for sharing.

Matt, glad you handled this well. I have faced Low BG's, with lots of active insulin on board, and double down arrows - yes very scary. With me, drop the slow digesting carbs as you did, grab some oj and go to town - 8 ounces or more, take it and go lay down some where keeping a wary eye on those numbers. If more oj seems needed take it without hesitation. Keep an eye on those double down arrows. When it initially changes to a single arrow then a partially down arrow you have defeated a dangerous low blood sugar. I have done this without ever blacking out. Sure, sometimes this means high glucose numbers later on but so what? Life beats death any day so yes, go overboard and feel good about it. Always consider exercise, insulin dose and glycemic index of your meal.

Glad you’re okay. I related to this…it’s definitely difficult in the moment to halt emotional over-correcting. My husband has said you are probably good where you’re at with correcting and I did another glucose shot out of fear anyway and went too high.

Thank you for this episode. I can relate exactly to what you conveyed to us. We’re all human. I changed my diet and took too much long acting insulin before bedtime and 2 hours after I fell asleep, the monitor alarm went off which was the loudest it could go and I saw my blood sugar plummeted to 47. Eeeek! I ran to the fridge to dose a can of Mountain Dew which has more carbs than any other. Not fun and very scary

I keep some glucose tablets, a liquid glucose (rescue) packet, and then near my bed and in cars, a small bottle of coca cola,, at night if I hypo ,,the caffiene and sugar might help me.. a diabetic aunt taught me this and it has helped .. sometimes if a person gets too low eating chewing will not work for me... so liquid.. I also unlock my door (I live alone) so first responders can get in.. glad your okay!

If glucose tabs don’t work quickly I have a large mouthful of unprocessed honey. Works quickly every time.

1) Since all those carbs--fast and slow--are all mixed in the stomach together, would it not still slow down the fast ones getting into the bloodstream at least some? I am thinking of something like a baked potato is fastish carbs so adding butter slows down the fast carbs getting into the bloodstream. Would that same speed delay be in play here with the peanut butter and bread in their too? 2)What do you think about giving small doses of glucagon? I have followed people that give small doses of glucagon instead of food especially in this type situation. Usually it is from expired glucagon that they saved instead of tossing.

Micro-dosing glucagon, I"ve heard of it, but never done it. That being said, I have baqsimi, which cannot be given in small amounts - unfortunately it's all or nothing with that one

@FTFWARRIOR I think the heat might have something to do with it, or maybe the insulin is somehow having a bigger affect so I been cutting units so instead of taking 10 I take 8 for example

Why not follow Dr Bernsteins protocol? Low carb and low insulin doses. Pracically none of these extreme fluctuations in glucose. I'm 62, T1D for 17 years, works out every day, done ultraprojects like crossing Europe 3100k in 63 days, no insulin production left in me according to my C-peptides. For me the carbs are the big no-no. Every other parameter I can handle, but not the carbs. No matter which type I consume -fast or slow- it just becomes unpredictable and it pisses me off totally. I also use an eating window of between 4-6 hours every day, and I eat pretty much the same food every day. Apart from this I micro manage my blood sugars with mini doses of insulin (0,5-2,0u) and dextrosol (half or whole tablet for 2 or 4g of carbs). My A1c are these days at 30 just under 5,0% and my goal is 26 (4,5%) which would mean an average daily glucose of approx 83. I'm currently trying to recover from aquired neuropathy and gastroparesis due to that my first 15 years as a T1D I didn't know about Dr Bernstein and our useless doctors here in Sweden told me I was doing fine. Yeah right. I burned out my last own production of insulin and I got these injuries. However now I feel that the process are in reverse and that is very very hopeful 🙏! Dr Bernstein is my hero ❤!

But if as a diabetic, I can eat that much food and keep blood sugars in a 'non-diabetic' range, is there a problem with a big breakfast?
