Do you think that some photographers only think in colour and this could be holding them back? 6:04 would look very different in black & white. Just because something doesn't look good in colour doesn't mean it will look bad in black & white, I think many photographers (mostly on KZbin I have to say) don't seem to even consider this.
@ChrisSalePhoto2 жыл бұрын
What an excellent question! Personally speaking, I find it very difficult to switch from colour to black and white. If I shoot in mono, I have to go out with the intention of doing so and focus solely on finding compositions that work. I am not sure if I feel this is holding me back in anyway. I love the subjectivity of photography and am fascinated how different photographers tackle the same scene. What I try to do is to share how I see the world. With the progress that I have made in the last few years I am at last producing images that align with that vision on a consistent basis, which is really satisfying. :) I would like to do more in black and white and continually work on this behind the scenes (for example, my 2022 project will be in black and white). I don't think KZbinrs are exceptionally prone to this problem. It's just that the process that we go through in order to produce our images is so much more visible, and so the mistakes that we make are much more obvious. Does that make sense?

Lovely conditions, Chris, and great to see the pair of you back together again. I really enjoy this approach to photography which pretty much echoes my own; go out for a walk, react to what you're presented with and enjoy the day, images or no images. I never go out with a pre-visualised idea of what I'm going to shoot anymore and find a reactive approach liberating, exciting and extremely rewarding when everything comes together for a good image. The main thing is, I never return home disappointed or frustrated, my days in the mountains are 100% about enjoyment.

Hey Nick, it was great to get to spend so much time with Jules up in the fells. You were with us in spirit, never far from our thoughts. I think I am growing into this approach. I'm not enitely comfortable giving up the crutch of a carefully considered plan, but as my photography continues to improve, I am growing in confidence. I am learning to take more time to observe what is going on around me rather than being too blinkered. It's all part of the 'journey'. A few years behind you mate, but no doubt heading in the same direction. :)

Thats my general approach , documenting the landscape, I usually get a 2-3 photos from a shoot and have now started making notes on the phone with maps etc and phone shots of area . Otherwise I have one camera with a 16-80 lens and that's it. No tripod nothing else. If I'm doing week trip I will take more gear . I'm going g to Tasmania in May so that will be my approach. Fabulous shots you got Chris and what lovely weather you had .

Hi Keith - it is inevitible I suppose Keith. I am working on some videos in this subject. For me the M50 is the perfect camera, but it is let down by the lenses. If Canon did L Series glass for the EF-M mount, I would switch in a heartbeat!

Lovely shots and enjoyable video! A bit off topic, but is there any reason why trees don’t grow on these mountains? Here in Japan, we have a lot of similar topography, but the forests are incredibly dense down to the water’s edge. I envy the landscape in the Lake District.
@ChrisSalePhoto2 жыл бұрын
Hi there - apparently, the whole of the Lake District was covered by forest when the first settlers arrived over 5,000 years ago. Over time the fells were cleared to make way for agriculture - mostly sheep farming. Today, only a few patches of ancient forest exist which is a shame. My people believe that the landscape is natural, but it is almost entirely sculpted by that actions of man... first agricuture and mining, now tourism it seems.

Chris really enjoyed the journey. As you know I am out on the fells during the day but with that type of light you can(which you did) come away with some great shots. I do find however some summits a bit of a disappointment. One thing you did mention was going light (I often just take the 24-200). How did you find not having your main gear?
@ChrisSalePhoto2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rod, I certainly appreciated leaving my full kit at home as I was huffing and puffing to the top of the Nan Bield Pass. I do normally take it up there but we were hiking a lot further, so it made sense to pack light. I don't miss my main gear when out shooting with the M50. I think it is underrated as a camera. I have always been pleased with the results. The limitation appears to be the lenses. If Canon did L series lenses for the EF-M mount, I would switch immediately.
