Hey Chris! I'm new to channel and I just wanted to say your videos are awesome. Lately, I've been in a photography rut and it's definitely down to the fact I haven't been doing it consistently. I've got a few folders of images to finish processing (and you know how much I hate that task) and I might do the same exercise. As for getting out once a week - not a chance for me. I have to be honest, I have made that mistake myself more than once over the years. It does take a lot of concentration to be able to produce these videos. Hopefully I'll be able to continue to put the photography first. Happy New Year to you Neil!

Enjoyed the video Chris. I’m going to try and take your advice and practice more. The weather recently has been atrocious and I’ve got into the habit of not taking my camera with me when I go out. Loved the portrait shot and the rocks do make a difference. Wonderful pastel colours in the sky, reflected in the water.
@ChrisSalePhoto3 жыл бұрын
I think if you can make more time to practice Charles it really will help. My approach is to treat every trip out the same, as an opportunity to practice, and if I get a decent image at the end of it, that is a bonus. At the moment 1 in 10 trips yeilds a portfolio image. That is enough for me! Happy New Year to you.

Nice to see you on KZbin again. I agree with you, I have to practice if I want to get better. Here in particular, I'm a little jealous of your opportunities to use the day to take photos. My problem is that the light is best when I'm at work. My working hours are given, so unfortunately I can't change anything. There are only the weekends on which it is unfortunately not always as nice as in the week, wasn't it weird? I wish you and your family all the best for 2022

Ho Jörg - it is very much the same for most amateurs here in the UK. It is dark before they finish work. In order to practice they have to make time at the weekend, regardless of the weather. I have found my new geared head makes it easier to operate my camera while holding an umbrella, so will be heading out in the bad weather more in 2022. Happy New Year to you mate.

I’d not even heard of Brothers Water, or if I had I’d forgetter about it but looking at the map it made me also look at Ullswater and pin some locations of Jetty’s, car parks etc. Great video Chris, especially for me as I primarily shoot Street Photography but I’m going to shoot much more Landscape, Seascapes, Waterfalls etc in 2022 so your video actually hit the nail on the head. I’m going to start locally, it’s a must really as I live in Horwich, at the foot of Rivington and Winter Hill on the West Pennine Moors

So you aren't too far away form the Lake District then Brian. There are certainly lots of good locations around Ullswater for you to visit when you get the chance. Glencoyne is a particular favourite of mine. The parking is so convenient and there is lots to explore in that area. Good luck with it all and all the best for 2022. Happy New Year to you.

Chris! A pleasant way to end the day after being out (wait for it)..... shooting. I really like the training metaphor, especially apropos since the weather here in NY has been dismal and uninspiring. We've yet to get our first "big snow" so the landscape is less than appealing. However, I have been putting in the training as you suggest. I've been focusing a bit more on birding and wildlife in prep for Spring 2022. Excellent to see you back at it Chris. Happy New Year and a safe and healthy 2022.

Hi Chris, nice to meet you again on KZbin. I must admit I was a little worried about your absence and I fully agree with your motivations. Of course, marketing on KZbin is important, but I always thought that filming and taking photos at the same time was really complicated. On the technical side, as Canon users we have to do often a bracketing to compensate the "not so good" dynamic range of our cameras... May the new year be full of many satisfactions.
@ChrisSalePhoto3 жыл бұрын
Hey Riccardo - you are so right about the dynamic range of our Canons! When mine was released, it was the highest dynamic range of any Canon camera. That was ever such a long time ago though! Still, a bit of bracketing helps me to tackle even the most extreme dynamic range, so I'm not in the market for a new camera just yet. Still life in the old girl yet! :) Happy New Year to you.

Great to see you back on KZbin, Chris! I completely take your point about the photography coming first, though. I think there are a lot of sub-par shots in some other creators' work at the moment. Photograph first, video and explanation a definite second. 👍

Thanks Steve - sorry to hear that other creators are struggling, I can totally empathise with them. Great to see you back Chris, I have missed your videos. Completely understand the point you made about not giving your photography 100% when you make KZbin videos, and that does make perfect sense. Hey Tom, fingers crossed I will be able to keep up the videos in 2022. I think the best approach is to make sure that I head out at least once a week without the intention of filming myself, so that I can focus purely on the photography.

You looked quite well on the video baring in mind the next 48 hours. As you know I take too many shots when I am out so my 2022 plan is to be more focused when I shoot. Only time will tell! I also like the idea of the two perspectives of the same view I am also trying to practice that taking into account my aversion to portrait mode.

Nice to see you back Chris, great idea to shoot at least once a week, as they say practice makes perfect. Wondering why you wouldn't have used the new features in Lightroom to bring the sky exposure down instead of blending 3 shots. Beautiful image, all the best for 2022.
@ChrisSalePhoto3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ross - the new masking features in Lightroom work well, but without bracketing I wouldn't have had all the detail that I needed in the sky. I don't like to expose for the sky and then lift the shadows because this produces very poor quality images in my experience. Hope that makes sense.

Good to have you back Chris. But I have a question: is there a reason why you bracket manually rather automatically? I'm guessing that it's because your camera doesn't have this feature, but if it's something else, I'd be interested to know.
@ChrisSalePhoto3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dougie - yeah, I don't use autoexposure bracketing. I find it simpler this way. I use the histogram to set the longest exposure that I am going to need and then just take shots at 1 stop intervals until I don't get any clipping. Sometimes it takes 3 exposures, sometimes 9! Using AEB usually involves calculating the number of stops difference between the shadows and highlights, and by the time I have done that I could have captured all of the exposures that I need. It also helps in Lightroom, as the images are displayed in order, from lightest to darkest.
