Knife Collectors often call a Waiter's Tool or Bartender Knife a "Champagne Knife. In reality, a totally different kind of knife is sometimes used to open Champagne.

Very interesting episode Tobias, during the COVID pandemic, Alton Brown perfectly sabered a bottle of champagne with a dinner knife on an episode of his Quarantine Quitchen KZbin channel. Didn't know Skip had cultures.

Hi Tobias: I was aware of this piece of showmanship but not of the how to particulars. Very interesting. Thanks. 🍾 🔪

The tradition of using a Champaign Sword most often used a large Magnum Champaign Bottle. The table would have Champaign Glasses set in a pyramid on a large silver serving tray. Once the Champaign opened by the sword and the foaming from the bottle ceased. The Champaign is emptied into the top glass of the pyramid. The Champaign cascaded down the pyramid filling all the Champaign glasses until empty. The glass of Champaign is severed to each guest for one toast. After the toast, the Champaign glass was broken to seal the toast for good luck. 'Vive la France!'🥂 The word Magnum refers to a bottle twice the size or bigger than a standard bottle. Also adopted by firearm cartridges that use more powder in a larger than standard cartridge case.👍😆

I've seen people open bottles with swords before. It's pretty cool but it always overcomes me with dark thoughts. Specifically, am I'm ingesting shards of broken glass with each swallow.

If it's not worthy of the name "Champagne Sabre", maybe it's a Chianti Cutlass??😆

Here we would call these a waiters friend. Usually they will have something as a foil cutter and has some form of bottle opener in addition to the corkscrew and its lever. Obviously, as you say, about the only thing you can’t open with it is champagne! Champagne sabre always looks very scary to me, as generally you don’t cut the wire and pull out the cork but instead break the neck off the bottle. Broken glass and drinks are not a good combination in my mind. And, of course, have the champagne usually end up on the floor!

Man, I bought a weird red gunstock rough Ryder that I think is a “bartenders knife”, has a spear master instead of that clip point on the case you have. But it’s got that weird little hawkbill blade on the end, never knew that was for wine labels, very cool. Learn something every time I watch this channel, love that. That champagne Sabre is really cool, something you rarely see on knife channels. Another great video, thanks Tobias!

What a fun cool post Tobias, and the history too. I can remember seeing such a stunt in the movies at some point in the past not realizing that it is a practiced skill. I wonder if a 16" SEO Bowie will work on bottles of Andre Brut ($4.99/bottle on sale at Sam's Club). Very cool knife Tobias, thanks buddy.
